A further object of my invention is to provide a bag having a locking device of the character described, of simple construction, which will l5 be economical to manufacture; which shall be ornamental and at the same time, operate with a high degree of efiiciency for the purposes intended.

Other objects of this invention will in part be o obvious and in part hereinafter pointed out.

The invention accordingly consists in the features of construction, combinations of elements, and arrangement of parts which will be exemplied in the construction hereinafter described,

Referring now in detail to the drawing, and particularly to Figs. l to 4, there is disclosed a 55 well-known type of ladys bag I0 having the adsubstantially jacent bottom and side edges fastened together and the free edges at the top of the bag provided with a separable frame comprising two pivotally interconnected members II and I2 forming the mouth of the bag.

In order to retain the bag I0 in closed position as shown in Figs. 1 and 2 of the drawing, there may be provided a longitudinal channelshaped member I4, which is adapted to t over the top of the free edges of the separable frame to prevent separation and opening of the members II and I2. The channel member I4 may be suitably attached to one of the said free edges by such means as a hinge in order that it may be pivotally moved out of its closed position to a/position as shown in Fig. 4. to permit opening of the bag I0. In order to retain the said channel member I4 in closed position to prevent accidental opening of the bag, I have provided a novel locking member I5 which may be suitably attached to the member I4 by such means as a pivot I 5. The member I5 miay comprise a short portion adapted to overlie the top of the channel member I4 and a longer portion there- 0f at an angle to said rst portion, adapted to be disposed adjacent one side of the bag I0, when said lock I5 is in closed or operative position as shown in Figs. 1 and 2 of the drawing. To retain the member I5 in said locked position as just described I have provided a pair of catch members II which may be upset from the top surface of the member I4 as shown in Fig. 3, or which may be of any other suitable design, and disposed so as to resiliently engage and retain the lock I5 in position as shown in Figs. 1 and 2 of the drawing.

When it is desired to open the bag it is merely necessary to grip the lower portion of the lock I5 and exert an upward force sufficient to release the lock from the catch members I1. When the lock I5 is pivotally moved to the position as' shown in Fig. 4, the channel member I 4 -will automatically release the free edges of the top of the bag to permit opening thereof.

By my invention I cause the above-described locking mechanism to serve as a holder for gloves, handkerchiefs and the like, arranged inY such manner that it is not necessary to open or close the bag in order to operate the glove holding device.

Pivotally mounted on the member I 5 at a point such as at 20, in a pair of guides 2| is a rod member 25 having at its upper free end a ball g shaped tip 26 adapted to cooperate with a pair of spaced ball shaped members 21. The said members 2l are so designed and disposed as to function as a resilient catch for the rod 25. Thus it is seen that when it is desired to place a pair of gloves in the holder, the rod 25 is pivotally moved to the dotted line position shown in Fig. 2 of the drawing, the gloves inserted between the wall of the bag and the member 25, and the rod 25 returned to its original position between the members 2l to hold the gloves against loss. It is also apparent from the above description of the operation of myinvention that the bag It may be opened and closed at will without the necessity of removing the gloves or disturbing the glove holding mechanism. The above feature is best illustrated in Fig. 4 of the drawing.

Ey my invention as disclosed in Figs. l to 4, it is also apparent that the glove holding device may be supported without the necessity of piercing or mutilating the material of the bag in any way.

In Figs. 5 to 8 of the drawing, there are shown modied forms of my invention.

In Fig. 5 I have illustrated a different form of locking mechanism for the bag, comprising a pair of ball tipped opposing members 3B and 3l disposed on each of the free edges of the bag and adapted to overlap each other a predetermined amount in order to act as a resilient catch to retain the bag in closed position. The rod 25 is pivotally mounted in a manner similar to that shown in Fig. l, except that it is mounted directly on the side wall of the bag instead of to the member I5. The upper free end of the rod 25 may be curved as shown and provided J with a ball 25which is adapted to cooperate with the ball 3l to overlap the same, and act as a resilient catch therewith, similar to the arrangement of the members Sil` and 3i Thus it is seen that the bag. Il) may be opened or closed by manually manipulating the members 3G and 3l while the members 3l and 26 continue to remain in engaged position. Also, the members 3l and 25 may be separated without disturbing the relationship between the members 35 and 3 l.

In Fig. I'I I have illustrated a modified form of glove holding means used in connection with the Fig. l type of locking device. Instead of the rod 25 I employ an ornamental member lill which may be pivotally secured to the lower end of the member I5 by such means as a hinge 4l. The upper end of the member 40 is adapted to cooperate with a suitable catch member, such as 42. The member 40 may be held normally in closed or glove holding position as shown, by means of a 'spring 45, attached to the hinge 4|. In Fig. 8 there is shown a gloveretaining member `similar to the Fig. 7 form but illustrating a different type of ornamentation, such as initials which may be removably mounted on the member 40 in any well-known manner.

In Fig. 6, I have shown my novel glove holding mechanism as applied to the envelope type of bag 50 having a locking mechanism comprising a snap fastener 5I mounted on the inner side of the overhanging flap 55 and adapted to cooperate with a catch 52 on the outer wall of the bag 50. The member 53, corresponding to the member l5 is mounted at the lower end of the ap 54 of the bag and extends downwardly as shown. The rod 25 is pivotally mounted on the member 53. in a manner similar to that shown in Fig. 1 and has at its upper free end a ball 2S adapted to cooperate with a pair of resilient catch members 2l mounted on the member 53. In this form it is also seen that the operation of the glove holding device is independent of the opening and closing of the bag and at the same time the glove holding device is designed to serve as a convenient handle member to facilitate the opening and closing of the bag.

It will thus be seen that there is provided a dewce in which the several objects of this irivention are achieved, and which is well adapted to meet the conditions of practical use.

As various possible embodiments might be made of the above invention,A and as various changes might be made in the embodiments above set forth, it is to be understood that all matter herein set forth or shown in the accompanying drawing, is to be interpreted as illustrative and not in a limiting sense.

Having thus described my invention, I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent:

1. In combination, a bag of the character described, releasable means for retaining said bag in closed position, comprising a relatively narrow portion extending transversely along one side of the bag when in closed position, and a glove holding device mounted on said transversely extending portion, comprising an ornamented member having one end pivotally mounted on said retaining means, and means for normally urging the free end of said pivotally mounted member toward said retaining means.

2. In combination, a ladys bag ofthe pouch type having a frame, releasable means for retaining said bag in closed position, said releasable means comprising a relatively narrow plate eX- tending transversely along one side of the bag when in closed position and having a portion thereof adapted to cooperate with catch means on said frame, and a glove holding device mountl ed on said plate comprising a rigid member having one end pivotally mounted on said retaining means and having adjacent the other end thereof a ball portion, catch means mounted on said retaining means for releasably holding the free end of said pivotally mounted member, said catch means comprising a pair of ball members adapted to frictionally receive the said rigid member between them whereby the ball portions of said rigid member and said catch members are in triangular formation, the operation of said glove holding means being independent of said bag closing device.

3. A locking device for bags of the frame or pouch type comprising a relatively narrow flat plate adapted to cooperate with catch means on said bag for releasably locking said bag, means for pivotally attaching said plate to said bag frame, a member pivotally mounted at one end thereof on said plate and catch mechanism on said plate adapted to engage the free end of said pivotally mounted member, said pivotallymounted member being movable independently of said bag locking means.

4. A locking device for ladies bags and the like comprising a relatively narrow rigid member adapted to cooperate with catch means` on said bag for releasably locking said bag and tobe transversely disposed and parallel to one side of said bag when in locked position, and glove holding means mounted on said transversely disposed member, said glove holding meansbeing operable independently of said locking means.

5. A locking device for ladies bags and the like comprising a relatively narrow rigid member having a relatively short portion and a relatively long portion at an` angle thereto, said long portion adapted to overlie a portion of one side of said bag when in locked position, and glove holding means mounted on said rigid member, said glove holding means comprising a member pivotally mounted at one end thereof and provided with an enlarged portion adjacent the free end thereof, and a catch device cooperating with said free end, said catch device comprising a pair of spaced members having enlarged heads adapted to frictionally receive between them the free end of said pivotally mounted member, the movement of said pivotally mounted member being independent of said rigid member.

6. As an improved article of manufacture, a ladys bag of the pouch type having a frame, provided With releasable means for retaining said bag in closed position, said releasable means comprising a relatively narrow plate extending transversely along one side of the bag when in closed position and having a portion thereof adapted to cooperate with catch means on said frame, and article holding means mounted on said releasable retaining means, said holding means comprising a member having one end thereof hinged to said narrow plate and the other end thereof being adapted to cooperate with releasable catch means on said plate.

As an improved article of manufacture, a ladys bag of the pouch type having a frame, providedl with releasable means for retaining said bag in closed position, said releasable means comprising a relatively narrow plate extending transversely along one side of the bag when in closed position and having a portion thereof adapted to cooperate with catch means on said frame, and article holding meansI mounted on said releasable retaining means, said holding means comprising a member having one end thereof hinged to said narrow plate and the other end thereof being adapted to cooperate with releasable catch means 40 on said plate, said hinged member being pivotally movable independently of said means for releasably retaining the bag in closed position.

8. In combination, a bag of the character described having a frame, releasable means on said frame for retaining said bag in closed position, said releasable means comprising a relatively narrow plate extending transversely along one side of the bag when in closed position and having a portion thereof adapted to cooperate with catch means on said frame, and a glove holding device mounted on said plate, said glove holding device comprising a member pivotally mounted on said plate, the movement of said pivotally mounted member being independent of said means for releasably retaining said bag in closed position.

9. In combination, a bag of the character described having a frame, releasable means hinged to said frame for retaining said bag in closed position, said last-named means comprising a relatively narrow plate extending transversely along one side of the bag when in closed position and having a portion thereof adapted to cooperate with catch means on said frame, and a glove holding device mounted on said plate, said glove holding device comprising a member having one end thereof pivotally mounted on said plate, and catch means on said plate whereby the free end of said pivotally mounted member is adapted to engage in said catch means, the movement of said pivotally mounted member being independent of said releasable means for retaining the bag in closed position.

10. In a bag of the character described, the combination of a frame, releasable means pivotally mounted on said frame for retaining said bag in closed position, said releasable means comprising a plate having a relatively narrow portion extending transversely along one side of the bag when in closed position, a glove holding device mounted on said transversely extending portion comprising a rod-like member having one end pivotally mounted on said retaining means, and means on said retaining means for releasably retaining the free end of said rod-like member, the pivotal movement of said rod-like member being independent of the releasable means for retaining the bag in closed position.
