INVENTOR. QSI/'wuam @M UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE., y
SIMEON L. LEACH, OF UORRY, `I)ENNSYLVANIA, ASSIGNOR TO HENRY It. ELLIS, OF SAME PLACE.
vIMPROVEMENT IN BED-BOTTOMS.
Specication forming part of Letters Patent No. ldflll, dated June 24, 1873; application tiled November 9, 1872.
To all whom fit lmay concern:
Be it known that I, SIMEON L. LEAOH, vof Corry, in the county of Erie and State of Pennsylvania, have invented a new and valuable VImprovement in Bed-Bottoms; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description of the construction and operation ofthe same, reference being had to the annexed drawings making a part of this specification and to the letters and figures of reference marked thereon.
Figure l of the drawings is a representation of a top view ot' my bed-bottom. Fig. 2 is a longitudinal section of the same. Fig. 3 is a cross-section of the same.
This invention has relation to bedsteads; and it consists in the construction of longitudinal wooden slats formed of double strips of timber and united together by glue, as hereinafter described.
Referring to the drawings,A designates the bedstead; B, curved elastic slats, formed of two or more strips of timber, folded one upon the other, as shown, and united by means of glue, arranged lengthwise ot' the bed stead and secured at their ends to transverse bars C, which have their ends grooved, and are supported by means of elastic bands D, suspended from pegs E inserted in or attached to the sides ol the bedstead.
By mea-ns of the elastic slats and bands the bed-bottom has a double spring action. The bands allow the bars C to move lengthwise ot' the bedstead to adapt themselves to the extension and contraction or straightening and curving of the sla-ts.
The tendency ot' Wooden slats to sag downward under the pressure of heavy bodies, and thereby to lose the arched form so desirable in bed-bottoms, is well understood. It is to remedy this evil that my device is peculiarly adapted. By the use of the double layers the desired strength is obtained, and at the same time the liability of change from the arched form is greatly lessened. The introduction ot' glue between the layers serves to give the parts the required firmness and prevent the bent timbers from losing their spring or con vexity.
What I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
In a bed-bottom, the wooden slats constructed of double strips united together with glue,- as described, in combination with the rollers U and straps D, substantially as specified.
In testimony that I claim the above I have hereunto subscribed my name in the presence of two witnesses. SIMEON L. LEAGH.
