Witnesses TED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
IMPROVEMENT IN BED-BOTTOMS.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 129,152, dated July 16, 1872.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, JOSHUA S. MARTIN, of Mount Pleasant, in the county of Henry and in the State of Iowa, have invented certain new and-useful Improvements inBed-Bottoms; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description thereof, reference being had to the accompanying drawing and to theletters of reference marked thereon making a part of this specification.
The nature of my invention consists in the construction and arrangement of a spring bed-bottom, as will be hereinafter more fully set forth.
In order to enable others skilled in the art to which my invention appertains to make and use the same, I will now proceed to describe its construction and operation, referring to the annexed drawing, in which- Figure 1 is a perspective view, and Fig. 2 a longitudinal vertical section, of my spring bedbottom.
A represents the frame of the bedstead, or an extra frame put into the bedstead, and B is a frame with slats forming the bed-bottom. This bottom is supported upon four levers, G G, which are pivoted two to each side of the frame A, their outer ends extending nearly to the ends of the bed-bottom. The inner ends of each set of levers overlap each other, and the upper lever of each set is pressed upon by an arm, D, extending from a shaft, E, having its bearin gs in the sides of the frame A. Around one end of this shaft is wound a spring, G, one
end of which is attached to the shaft and the other in the frame A. The effect of this spring is to force the arms D D against the levers in such a manner as to throw the frame or bottom B up.
The foot can be let down any desired distance lower than the head by shifting the screws in the levers. The levers may be pressed down and a pin put over one of them, so that the bed may remain low during the day, as if there were no spring in it, and by removing the pin at bed-time it will be ready for use. It can be strengthened or weakened, as desired, by turning the shaft around so as to wind or unwind the spring. This can be done in a few seconds, so that it will spring easy and free with one or two occupants.
The same arrangement may be applied to sofas, lounges, wagon or carriage seats; &c.
Having thus fully described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
The combination of the frame or bottom B, levers O O, shaft E with arms D D and spring G, all constructed and arranged substantially as and for the purposes herein set forth.
In testimony that I claim the foregoing I have hereunto set myhand this 1st. day of May, 1872.
. J. S. MARTIN.
