GEORGE E. BITTENHOUSE, OF AKRON, OHIO.
IMPROVEMENT IN DOOR-CHECKS.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 139,082, dated May 20, 1873 application filed April 12, 1873.
To all whom it may concern:
'Be it known that I, GEORGE E. RITTEN- HOUSE, of Akron, in the county of Summit and State of Ohio, have invented a new and Vuseful Improvement in Door-Fasteners, of
of devices adapted to be applied to doors for holding them open at any desired angle 5 and it consists in a pivoted catch-lever, a notched circular plate, and a rod, all arranged to adapt the lever to be locked in various positions, and thereby hold the rod engaged with the door, as hereinafter described.
In the drawing, A represents the door, to which is applied, at the side which opensinto the room or other part of the building, a plate, B, with a notched circular flange a. It is made of brass or other suitable material, and screwed to the door by screws b. The lever C is applied centrally to catch B, moving freely around pivot d. At one end of lever (l is the button or knob e to the other end is pivoted rod D. The handle end of lever (l is slightly bent up, so as to pass freely over the teeth of catch B, and has a pawl f applied at its lower side. A spring may also be arranged under lever C for holding the same in place on catch B. Instead of the lever arrangement an eccentric may be used, and also, if desired, another bolt, to act on the top, may be added. The lower end of bolt D slides in guidestaple Z, and has a soft rubber capping, h, attached to it. Bolt D closes, when the door is shut,
into a recess, i, of the door-sill; when opened, it may be set and held in any position by means of lever C and ratchet B, the rubber or leather capping protecting the iloor orvcarpet against scratching or tearing by bolt D.
Having thus described my invention, I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Pat- 111?- In coibination with the plate B provided with a toothed circular llange, a, the lever C pivoted thereto at cl and having the catch s, and the rod D with capping h, all arranged to operate as specified.
GEORGE EGBEBT BITTENHOUSE.
