misses.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that we, CHARLES A. PAIN- Tnn, J r., and James P. MCKINNEY, Jr, citizens of the United States, and residents of Pittsburgh, in the county of Allegheny and State of Pennsylvania, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Door-Locks; and we do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description thereof.
Our invention relates to latches for doors of automobiles, or for other purposes to which it may be found applicable.
The object of the invention is to provide a simple and eflicient form of latch in which the thumb-piece or handle is in such position that it does not project beyond the door wall where it would be in position to be struck by an object or catch on the clothing of a person entering or leaving the car; and, at the same time, giving a neater and more attractive appearance. v
Referring to the accompanying drawing, Figure l is an inside view of a door of an automobile with the panel partly broken away to show the parts of the latch; Fig. 2 is a section on the line 22, Fig. 1; and Fig. 8 is a section on the line 3-3, Fig. 1.
In the drawing, the numeral 2 designates an automobile door or any suitable construction, said door being formed with the depression or recess 3 adjacent to the upperrim 4 of the door. Secured to the door within said depression is the guide-plate 5, which is held in position by screws 6 or other suitable fastening devices. This guide-plate 5 has the slot 7 which acts as a guide for the vertically movable strap 8. Secured to the vertically movable strap 8 isthe thumbpiece comprising a T-shaped member with the flange like crosspiece 9 with the downwardly projecting tail piece 10, by means of which said thumb-piece is secured to said vertically movable strap 8. Screws 11 or other suitable fastening devices may be used for this purpose. The downwardly extending portion 10 fits within the slot 7 of the Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Feb. 13, 1911'? Serial No. 60,283.-
guide-plate and is adapted to move up and down therein as the thumb-piece is raised or lowered.
In this manner the thumb-piece is located within the recess 3, and does not project beyond the do0r-panel so that it does not form an obstruction of any kind, which may be struck by any object or catch upon the clothing. Being located adjacent to the top edge at of the door, to lift the thumb-piece the fingers of the hand may rest upon the edge l, while the thumb engages the thumbpiece and in this way the necessary leverage is obtained to readily move the thumbpiece up to release the latch.
The vertically movable strap 8 has the slot 12 which engages the pin 13 on the plate lat. Pivotally secured to the lower end of the vertically movable member 8 is the toggle-arm 15, which has a pin 16 engaging the inner end 17 of the bolt 18. A stud 19 acts as a stop for the vertically movable member when said member is raised, and thetoggle-arm l5 acts to throw I scription that upon lifting the thumb-piece 9, the vertically movable strap 8 will be raised and the toggle-arm 15 moved to the position indicated in dotted lines, Fig. 1, and the bolt will be thrown back to disengage the latch. The thumb-piece 9 is raised by a direct vertical pressure, and being guided within the slot 7 the movement of the thumb-piece is the same at whatever point the pressure is applied to lift the same.
WVhat we claim is:
The combination of a door having a recess formed in its wall adjacent to the upper edge of the door, a guide-plate in said recess having a vertical. slot, a T-shaped thumb piece comprising a flangelike crosspiece, and a tail piece, said tail-piece having a sliding fit with said slot, a vertically-movable strap, said tail-piece resting in engagement with said strap and secured thereto, a A. PAINTER, J1'., and JAMES P. MCKINNEY, bolt, and connections between said bolt and J r., have hereunto set our hands.
said vertioa1ly-movab1e strap whereby the CHARLES A PAINTER JR operator with his hand on the upper ed e of V the door and the thumb engaging said c ioss- JAMES MCKINNEY piece, obtains the purchase for raising said Witnesses: vertically-movable strap to release the bolt. JOHN F. WILL, In testimony whereof We the said CHARLES VVM. ZUVER.
