Description
UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
MICHAEL R. PERKINS, OF PORTSMOUTH, NEW HAMPSHIRE.
IMPROVEMENT IN DOOR-CHECKS.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 144,222, dated November 4, 1873; application filed October 8, 1873.
To all whom it may concern:
Beit known that I, MICHAEL R. PEnKINs, of Portsmouth, county of Rockingham and State of N ew Hampshire, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Door- Fastenings, of which the following is a specification:
My invention relates to certain improvements in door-fastenings, whereby the door may be securely bolted when closed, or may be held partly open for purposes of ventilation 5 and it consists in a bolt having a T-shaped head, in combination with a hinged slotted bar attached to the door-j amb.
In the accompanying drawing, Figure l represents an inside view with the door closed and bolted. Fig. 2 is an edge view, showing the door held in position partly open.
A represents the door with the bolt attached, and B the door-jamb with the hinged slotted bar attached. The bolt C is formed with a T- shaped head, c. The bar D is formed with a slot, d, running its entire length, the portion of the slot nearest the j amb corresponding in size with the head c, and the remaining portion` being smaller, so as to correspond with the smaller portion of the bolt below the head. The inner end of the bar is formed with a screw shank, whereby it may be readily screwed into the jamb. Near the larger portion of the slot the bar D is hinged, so that it may be readilyturned to the right or left.
When the door is closed and it is desired to secure it, the bolt C is moved out just far enough to allow the head c to engage with the larger portion of the slot, and thus fasten the door.
When it is desired to hold the door partly open, the bolt C is moved farther out until the portion below the head engages with the smaller portion of the slot, when the door may be swung open as far as the length of the bar will permit.
The upper side of the slot may have notches formed on it for engagement with the bolthead, by slightly turning the bar toward the right hand, whereby the door may be held steadily in dii'erent desired positions between its extreme open and closed positions.
When the bar is not in engagement uth the bolt, it is swung back out of the way.
That I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
The bolt O, formed with the T-shaped head c, in combination with the slotted and hinged bar D, substantially as shown and described.
In testimony that I cla-im the foregoing as my invention I hereunto afx my signature this 30th day of September, 1873.
MICHAEL R. PERKINS.
