DOOR-CHECK.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 351,158, dated October 19, 1886.
Application filed August 16, 1886. Serial No. 211,011; (No model.)
To all whom, it may concern.-
Be it known that I, ISRAEL BRECHNER, a citizen of the United States, residing at Waterloo, in the county of Black Hawk and State of Iowa, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Door-Fasteners, of which the following is a full, clear, and exact description, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, forming part of this specification, in which Figure 1 is a perspective view of a doorfastener embodying my invention. adetail of the fastener detached from the door. Fig. 3 is a detail showing in section the lower end of the screw-bolt and its inserted elastic cushion.
My invention relates to devices applied to the lower part of the door and engaging the carpet or floor for holding saiddoor open in any desired position; and it consists in the peculiar construction and combination of devices, which I will hereinafter fully describe and claim.
To enable others skilled in the art to which my invention appertains, I will now describe its construction and indicate the manner in which the same is carried out.
In the said drawings, A represents a door, and B indicates a floor or a carpet. The lower portion of the door has secured to it, by screws or otherwise, a casting, 0, having a horizontal arm, a, the outer end of which is pierced with a threaded perforation, I), through which a bolt, I), is designed to pass. This bolt Dis threadezi to correspond with the threads formed in the perforation b,whereby said bolt may be adjusted within said perforation. The lower end of the bolt is bored out to form the socket 0, within which is seated an elastic cushion, E, the lower face of which projects beyond the end of the bolt, and is designed-to engage the floor or covering for the same when it is desired to hold said door open in a desired position. A head, 9, formed on the upper end of the bolt furnishes a means for adjusting said bolt to cause the cushion to engage the floor or be released from contact therewith. However, I-may prefer other means for accomplishing the same result, such as I have indicated by dotted lines in Fig. 1. In this figure the bolt is provided with a rod, h, which extends upwardly within easy reach of the operator, its upper end being suitably j ournaled upon the door, and is provided with a milled head, I, for facilitating the adjustments of said bolt.
From the foregoing description it is manifest that by simply screwing the bolt D until its cushion engages by frictional contact the floor or carpet the door may be securely held in any desired position.
When it is desired to securely hold the door in a closed position, it is only necessary to screw the bolt downward until its cushion enters the usual opening in the threshold,when it will be found the door is securely held, and can only be opened by unscrewing the bolt sufficiently to permit its cushion to be released from engagement with said opening.
