Specification of Letters Patent.
Pat-area sat i, ieiv.
Applicationii1ed1\i0vember29, 1915. se1i in6.ie4,o99.
To all tohomit may concern: I
,Be it known that I, JULI s IR. VVA'rfrs, a citizen of the United States, and resident of Atlanta, in the county of Fulton and State of Georgia, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Sash-Fasteners, of which the following isa specification.
My invention relates to new and useful improvements in window sash fasteners and has particular reference to a fastener adapted to lock both the lower and upper sash in any desired position. i V
The primary object of my invention is to provide a sashfastener of the class described that will automatically lock the window and prevent the same from being opened.
Another object of myinvention is to provide a sashfastener of the class described having a latch associated therewith to retain the fastener .inja locl ced position The latch also having means associated therewith for releasing the said latch and swinging the same away from the said locked position.
Another object of my invention is toprovidea sash fastener ofthe class described which is simple in construction, that may be manufacturedat asmall costandthat may be easily applied to any window sash.
Other objects and advantages to be derived from the use of mv improved window Y sash fastener will appear from the follow- Lee ing detail description and the claims, taken with an inspection of the accompanying drawings, in which Figure 1 is a front elevation of the preferred form of my invention applied to a window sash;
Fig. 2 is a top plan view of the same;
Fig. 3 is a longitudinal sectional view taken along the line 33 of Fig. 2.
Fig. 4 is a front elevation of a modified form of my invention applied to a window sash,
Fig. 5 is a top plan view of the same; and
Fig. 6 is a detail view of the base plate the sash being in section to show the manner of applying the fasteniu g means.
eferring more particularly to the drawing, wherein similar characters of reference designate like and corresponding parts throughout the various views, 1 designates the lower sash and 2 the upper sash of a window. The window frame 3 is provided with the common form of flange 4: to prevent the accidental falling out of the window.
By actual experiment I have found that by attaching the fastener designated F in its entirety on the top of the lower sash adj acent the outer edge thereof the best results may be obtained. A j j j The preferred form of my invention comprises a base plate 5 having a pair of vertically extending, parallel ears 6 mounted in spaced relation thereon. The cam 7 is pivotally connected to the earsG by means of an arm 7 h.vinga hub 8 provided on the end thereof; The said hub 8 having an opening in the center thereof to receive a shaft 9 extending through the said ears and pivotally connected to the hub. The hub 8 is provided with a lip '10 for a purpose which will hereinafter be described. 3
The baseplate 5 is provided with a trans verse groove 11 extending'from the back edge of the plate to a point, adjacent the front edge between the said ears. well 12 is provided at the end of the groove adjacent the front edge. I I
"A latch member designated L in its en tirety has an arm 13 adapted to be seated in the said groove. The arm 13 is provided with a heel 14 seated in the well and forming a fulcrum forthe said latch. pawl15 extends laterally of the arm 13 adjacent the end of the heel and is provided with a seat 16 to engage the lip 10 of the cam member and retain the same in locked position. The opposite end of the arm 13 is provided with an enlargement 17 which engages the arm 7 of the cam. When it is desired to release the cam from the locked position as shown in Fig. 3, a slight pressure is exerted on the pawl away from the cam which raises the enlargement 17 on the fulcrum 14. This operation releases the lip 10 from engagement with the pawl before the enlargement 1T swings the cam 7 upwardly and away from the locked position as shown, there being suflicicnt space in the well 12 to allow free play of the pawl.
The base plate 5 is provided with a plurality of slanting openings therein to form a secure fastening means for the said plate in conjunction with the screws 18 as shown in Fig, 6, thus providing means for securely fastening the plate without splitting or otherwise marring the sash.
In my modified form I provide a cam 19 pivotally connected to the ears 6 as shown in Figs. 4 and 5. It being obvious that when the window sash is lowered the cam will engage the opposite sash and prevent the same from being raised until the cam is disengaged by the raising of the same.
From the above description taken in connection with the accompanying drawings, it is thought that a clear and comprehensive understanding of the construction, operation and advantages of my sash fastener may be had, and while I have shown and described the invention as embodying a specific structure, I desire that it be understood that such changes may be made in said structure as do not depart from the spirit and scope of the invention as claimed.
Having thus fully described my invention, what I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is:--
l. A window fastener of the class described, including a base plate, ears formed on the said base plate in spaced relation, a cam pivotally connected to the said ears, the said base platehaving a groove formed therein between the said ears terminating adjacent one edge thereof, the said groove having a well therein adjacent the said edge,
a latch member including an arm adapted to be seated in the said groove, a heel formed on one end of said arm for engagement in the said well, a pawl extending upwardly from the said base, and a seat formed in one end of the pawl to retain the cam in a locked position.
2, A window fastener of the class described, including a base plate, vertical ears formed on the base plate in spaced relation, the said plate having a groove formed there- Gopies of this patent may be obtained for in between the said ears terminating adjacent one edge thereof, a cam member, an arm extending from the cam member, the end of the said arm being pivctally connected to the said ears, a lip formed on the free end of said arm, the said groove having a well therein adjacent the said edge, a latch member including an arm adapted to be seated in the said groove, a heel formed on one end of the arm and seated in the said well to form a fulcrum for the said latch, a pawl extending vertically of the last mentioned arm adjacent the said heel, a seat formed on the vsaid pawl to engage'thesaid lipand' retainthe cam in a locked position, and an enlargement formed on the opposite endof the last mentioned arm adapted to engage the first mentioned arm for a purpose specified.
3. A combination of a baseplate, vertical' ears formed on the base plate in spaced rela therewith adapted to engage first mentioned 3 means, to retain-said cam in-locked position.
In testimony whereof, I aifix my signature hereto.
v JULIUS R. WATTS.
