PATENT OFFICE.
FRANK C. HOFFMAN, 0F ALAMEDA, CALIFORNIA.
Specification of Letters Patent.
GARMENT-FASTENER.
Patented J une 14, 1921.
Application filed J'uly 9, 1918. Serial No. 244,034.
Z '0 all whom it may concern Be it known that I, FRANK C. HOFFMAN, citizen of the United States, residing at Alameda, in the county of Alameda and State of California, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Garment- Fasteners, of which the following is a specification.
This invention is a garment supporter, particularly adapted to be used for supporting mens undergarments.
The invention is illustrated in the accompanying drawing which forms a part of this specification and the appended claims.
Referring to the drawing:
Figure 1 is a fragmentary view of the upper part of a pair of mens trousers and a mans undergarment, and my supporter secured to the trousers and supporting the undergarment.
Fig. 2 is a front view of my supporter.
Fig. 3 is a rear view of my supporter.
Fi 4t is a side View of the supporter.
The supporter may be stamped from sheet metal and comprises a body 1, provided with holes 2 in its center and a depending hook 3 bent forwardly and downwardly from the upper end of said body, said hook being shorter than the length of the body and said holes being located below the lower end of the hook. The supporter may be secured to the outside of the trousers indicated 4: near tne upper edge thereof by sewing it to the trousers through the holes 2. The strap 5 on the upper part of the undergarment 6 may be drawn over the upper edge of the trousers and hooked over the hook 3, thus supporting the undergarment. As there is a strap on each side of mens undergarments, a supporter may be secured to each side of the trousers to engage each strap.
As can be readily seen from Fig. l in the drawings, the supporter is so positioned and constructed as to retain the usual supporting belt 7, indicated in dotted lines, in position in. addition to the ordinary belt loops 8 provided on trousers. It is often found that trousers are not provided with suflicient number of belt loops 8 to prevent the belt from rising over the edge of the trousers, causing an uncomfortable and annoying condition. On account of the wedge-shaped slot formed between the hook member 3 and the body portion 1 of the supporter, the ready insertion of the belt therebetween is permitted. It will also be noted that the strain set up between the belt and the pants, by the wearing of the garment, will cause the belt to become firmly gripped between the wedge surfaces of the end 3 and body portion 1. The supporter further functions as a button means for suspenders, as the reduced hook end 3 may be projected through the usual button hole in the end of suspenders. As many of the supporters may be provided around the upper cage of the trousers as may be found desirable.
Having described my invention, I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent:
The combined garment supporter, suspender button and belt retainer, in combination with a pair of trousers, comprising an elongated strip of metal having its side edges tapering toward one end thereof to a point, the larger end of the strip having a plurality of openings therein through which the strip is vertically secured to the outer face of the upper edge of the trousers, said strip being bent upon itself at a medial portion, whereby the smaller end portion thereof is projected toward the other end of the strip and at an angle to the remainder of the strip, the bent portion of the strip being abrupt thereby forming a definitely defined wedge-shaped slot in which a loop of the nether garment may engage and also the edge of a supporting belt, said smaller end portion terminating in a straight smooth point to pierce the button hole of a suspender.
In testimony whereof I atfix my si nature.
FRANK o. HOFFMAN.
