IMPROVMENTl IN BUTTONS.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 138,107, dated April 22, 1873; application iled v November 4, 1872.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, FRANK WASHBOURNE, of Brooklyn, in the county of Kings and State of New York, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Buttons, of which the following is a specification:
Figure l is a detail section of one of my iinproved buttons. Fig. 2 is a detail section of the same taken at right angles with the section shown in Fig. 1. Fig. 3 is a detail section of the shell. Fig. 4 is a detail view of the plate. Fig. 5 is a detail view of the post, cup, and bar or projection.
Similar letters of reference indicate corresponding parts.
My invention has for its object to furnish an improvement in the construction of buttons, which shall be applicable to pearl, rubber, ivory, vegetable-ivory, and composition buttons, to gold and silver jewelry buttons, sleevebuttons, shirt-buttons, studs, covered buttons, and other buttons, whatever be their kind, style, or material, and which shall be simple in construction and convenient in use, making the buttons much more serviceable without increasing the cost of manufacture; and it consists in a peculiar construction of and mode of attaching the back or inner plate of a shirtsleeve or bosom-button, whereby the latter is made easier to insert or remove from a sleeve or bosom, as will be hereinafter explained.
A represents the button, in the under side of which is formed a recess to receive the cup B'formed upon the end of the post O so that said cup may bepressed into the said recess, and expanded to secure the saidibptton to the said post. Upon the other end .of the post O is formed a bar or projection, D, which may be made in the form of a cross-head, as shown in the drawing. E is the plate, through the center of which the post C passes, and which has a recess or cavity formed in its under side to receive the bar or projection D of the post C, said cavity being made sufficiently deep to allow the shell F to fit snugly to the inner side of the said plate E, and thus confine the bar or projection in its place. The projection or bar D is made i'n the form of a cross-head. The plate E has a slot formed in it at right angles to the recess or cavityso that the said plate E can be readily slipped over the said bar or projection D, and then turned to bring said bar or projection into its recess, the shell F, when closed down upon the plate E, keeping the bar orfprojection D securely/in place, and preventing the possibility of its working out. If desired, the plate E mayl be made small, and soldered to the plate F.
In order torinsert the button into the bosom or sleeve of a shirt, the back or inner plate should be irst turned as far backas possible upon the shank, and then it can be put through the button-hole from the outside without dificulty. Y After insertion the base or inner plate of the button is turned into a position at right angles with the shank by pressure of it against the i. person of the ,wearer or otherwise, and thus the button is prevented from becoming casually detached.
AHavin g thus described my invention, I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patentn As a new article of manufacture, the improved sleeve or bosom button herein described, consisting of the shell F, struck-up vslotted plate E, T- shaped post G, and button A, all constructed` and combined in the manner and for the purpose specified.
