IMPROVEMENT lN SEPARABLE BUTTONS.

Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 222,356, dated December 9, 1879; application filed September 30, 1879. i

To all whom it may concern:

Be it known that I, AUGUST R. LENnNER,'of Washington, in the District of Columbia, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in "separable and Adjustable Buttons for Jewelry and other purposes; and I do hereby deel are the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and to letters of reference marked thereon, which form a part of this specification.

My invention relates to that class of studs, shirt and cuft' buttons, and similar articles of jewelry pertaining to dress-wear which are made of two separable parts for convenience of application and removal; and it consists of a base-plate centrally supporting a tubular shank for receiving the locking mechanism, and of a face-plate or head provided with an adjustable spring-clasp.

Figure 1 represents a stud with the two parts attached. Fig. 2 represents a portion of the free end of the shank. Fig. 3 represents a spring-clasp detached, and Fig.4 is a rear view of the same.

In Fig. 1, A represents the base-plate and shank. The inner portion of the cavity of the shank is enlarged so as to form a shoulder around the inner surface, just within its free end, for engaging with the locking-spurs on the spring-clasp. I

p B represents the spring-clasp, by means of which the two parts of the stud are attached and held in place, and it consists of a piece of flexible metal'of suitable'form and size, bent upon itself forming two arms, -the ends of which are turned outwardly at right angles, and the portion which enters the shank is provided with a series of teeth or locking-spurs for engaging with the shoulder within the shank.

By having a series of locking-spurs the spring, when inserted into the shank, may be locked at variable points, and renders the stud adjustable to any'thickness of material of which the part of the garment or apparel to which it is attached may be constructed.

In Fig. 2, F represents slots or recesses, which there are two, formed in the free end of the shank for receiving the arms of the spring,

and which when the parts are attached pre-- To detach the stud it is only necessary to press the arms of the spring-clasp together until the spurs are free from their engagement with the shoulders, when the parts may be readily separated.

What I claim as my invention, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is

1. The spring-clasp B, havingits arms provided with teeth or locking-spurs, in co mbination with the base-plate and hollow shank A, all substantially as shown and described.

2. In a separable button, the spring-clasp B, plate I), and standard or stem O, in combination with the hollow shank A, provided with a locking-shoulder, all substantially as r set forth.

3. In a separable button, the spring-clasp B,

provided with the notched or toothed arms, in combination with the hollow part A, provided with the interior shoulder and the slot F, all substantially as set forth.
