REMOVABLE DEVICE FOR CLOTHING AND THE LIKE Filed Sept. 2, 1948 UREN JR.,
INVENToR: HAROLD S. AN B BY A Patented Feb. 3, 1953 REMOVABLE DEVICE FOR CLOTHING ANDTHE LIKE Harold S. van Buren, Jr., Cambridge, Mass., as-
signor tofUnted-Carr Fastener` Corporation, Cambridge, Mass., a corporation of Massachu- Applicationrseptember 2, 1948, `Serial N 0.41431 v1 My invention aims .to provide improvements .in fastening devices 'for closures vsuch asa're used vin connecting with articles of clothing andparticularly for use on articles Lthat require laundering and cleaning and where it;is`necessaryor desirable to remove a part of the fastening vdevice because it will not's'tandllaundering-or cleaning. vAn object of my invention vis to provide a snap fastener or button device ywhere lan ornamental part of the fastener or the button maybe easily and quickly attached to or removed from rthe garment -or the'like.
Another object of the device zis to provide for a device where that portion of the fastening means that cooperates with .the removable Apart (and which Vremains attached to lthe garment) will be indestructable 'by ordinary cleaning .and laundering processes.
VIt is also an object of my invention to provide 'a device which is useful inconnec'tion lwith quick and easy changing of the ornamental or button part of the device for style or color changing purposes.
Referring now to my invention as selected for illustration by the drawing forming a part hereof:

Fig.*10 vis an underside view-Uffa modified form of removable member; and
Fig. 1l is an enlarged section taken on the line I-I--II of Fig. -10.
Referring now'tomy invention as illustrated by the drawings I Ihaveshownan improved construction "for use 4in connection` with fasteners suchassnap-fasteners or `buttons for closures of clothing vand the like.
The same general construction may be used for buttons, ornaments or the like where it is 2 necessary to remove a button or an ornamental part of the fastener when the article of clothing or the like is to be dry cleansed or laundered. In the drawingsIhave confinedl the disclosure t0 a snap fastener of the laundryproof type with a removable ornamental :part that may kbe metal, plastic, a combination of both or any vother material that would be damaged if sent through dry cleansing or laundering processes. In my copending application Serial No. 47,432, filed VSeptember 2, 1948, I lhave vdisclosed and described removable buttons for clothing and the like closures suitable for use with the construction claimed Vherein for removably Yattaching a removable member to an attaching part.
The fastening means illustrated includes a stud installation comprising a carrying material I, a snap fastener stud member 2 (Fig. 3), and a stud attaching member 3. A socket installation to engage with the stud vinstallation includesa carrying material 4, asocket'member 5 and a socket attaching pronged ring Ii. There is also included the removable construction forming my invention and it comprises a removable part f'I, and an attaching part `8 providing a hollowreceptacle. This latter part may be assembled either with `the stud 0r the socket .but is herein shown as forming part of the stud installation.
The removable part 'I has atop .portion and a shank 9 assembled as a unit. lIhe shank has a flange I' at one end to which is vassembled the top portion in the form of a cap .II and at the other end of the shank'Ihave provided oppositely directed tongues I2-I2.
The attaching part 8, for receiving the'removable part l, comprises a shell I3assembled with the stud attaching member 31to form :a hollow member with a noncircular aperture I4 for receiving the tongues I2--I2 vin v one position as shown in Fig. 5. When the removable partis rotated the tongues I2-If2 -pass under the shell I3 and snap by the bumps FI5+I5 and stop against the stops 'ITB- |25 as Yshown in Fig. 4. Thus the removable part is held against accidental displacement when in use andcan be `removed \only by forceful rotation of .the Vtongues I2-I2'past the bumps `I5--I5.
My removable construction is simpleI it permits the use'of various ornaments, Vandthe attaching part 8 is thin,'strong to withstand hard usage as when laundered, and concealed by the removable part. As a strengthening `means to prevent collapse of the shell I3 I haveprovided'supporting tabs I'l--IT .between the shell and Ythe-stud attaching member 3.
One modied removable member is shown in FgslO and 1'1 and isinthe form of anordinary sew-on button I8 having holes I9. Through the holes I9 I have assembled a metal construction with legs 20-20 passing through two holes and clamped against the underside of the button. Two other legs 2I-2I pass through the other holes and have tongues 22-22 for removable engagement with the attaching part 8.
It should be understood that my attaching part 8 may be secured in position to the closure in any suitable manner and the button or ornament attached or detached easily and at will. My invention is simple in construction, durable, and fills a need for the use of fancy buttons or ornaments on clothing or the like. It eliminates the -probability of the destruction of such ornaments and makes it easy for any person to remove and attach at any desirable time.
