COMBINATION-BED.
Application filed. May 1., 1920.
1 '0 all "to/tom it may concern:
Be it known that 1, Jon SADLIK, a citizen of Poland, residing at Youngstown, county of lVestmoreland, and State of Pennsylvania, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Combination-Beds, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to beds having more particular relation to a bed structure with which is combined an invalids table and preferably also one or more seats, the invention being intended more particularly for embodiment in hospital beds, or other beds used by jnvalids.
The invention has for objects to provide a novel arrangement and mounting for an invalids table on the bed frame, and for adjustable seats which may be moved under the bed when not in use.
More specifically speaking the invention has for an object, to provide an arrangement in which one of the end boards of the bed frame may be made to constitute the table.
For further comprehension of the invention, and of the objects and advantages.
thereof, reference will be had to the following description and accompanying drawings, and to the appended claimsin which the various novel features of the invention are more particularly set forth.
Figure 1 of the drawings is a perspective view of a bed frame having the invention applied thereto.
Fig. 2 is a side elevation, partly in longitudinal section, thereof.
Fig. 3 is a similar view to Fig. 1 but showing the parts in a different position with the table and seats ready for use.
Fig. 4 is a transverse sectional view of the bed frame, this view being taken at the point indicated by the line see of Fig. 3.
As here shown the frame of the bed is of wood and consists of the four corner posts 10 united about midway between top and bottom thereof by the side bars 11 and end bars 12. These posts 10 are vertically slotted on their inner faces from their upper ends down to the end bars 12 as at 13, these slots receiving therein the side edges of the head board 14: and foot board 15, thus detachably securing these boards in place.
Hinged to the sides of the foot board 15 as at 16 are a pair of short links 17 whose opposite ends are provided with pins 18 en- Specification of Letters Patent.

Serial No. 378,064.
thereon, these pinions meshing with racks 24 fixed on the side bars 11 below the slots t will be obvious that by rotating the shaft 21, the struts will be moved longitudinally of the bed.
These struts are maintained upright in adjusted positions by means of headed pins engaging in longitudinally spaced sockets 26 in the upper edges of the side bars 11 and slidably carried in lateral offsets 27 from the struts 20 which project across the said top edges. of the side bars. These pins have suitable finger pieces on their upper ends whereby they may be lifted and are normally pressed downward into engagement with the sockets 26 by springs such as 28 carried in the offsets 27. Upon the upper ends of the struts 20 are formed extensions 29 projecting longitudinally of the bed and grooved as at 30 at their outer ends these grooves being adapted to receive and support the links 17 when the table is in use.
When not in use as a table the panel 15 occupies the position between the slotted posts forming the foot board of the bed as shown in Fig. 1. To adjust for use as a table the panel. 15 and links 17 are raised the pins 18 in the ends of the links, moving in the slots 19 in the struts 20. The panel is then swung away from the posts 10, the links 17 being turned over until they rest in the grooves 30 and the panel is swung to horizontal position on said links as shown in Fig. 3 where it forms a table which may be adjusted longitudinally of the bed by r0- tating shaft 21 as above pointed out.
To support the movable seats forming a part of my improved bed frame, a cross bar 35 extends between the side bars 11 and has hinged thereto, to swing in a horizontal plane, a pair of rigid arms 86 having seat elements 37-011 their outer ends. These arms as shown in Figs. 2 and 3 extend under blocks 37 rigid on the underside of the cross bar and are supported by a headed bolt 38 fixed to the cross bar. To hold the arm in its inner or outer adjusted position a ball 39 carried in a suitable recess in the block is pressed by a spring 410 against the face of the arm 36, this arm having shallow recesses such as a1 with which said ball on gages.
Having thus described n invention what I claim as new and desire to protect by Letters Patent, of the United States is as follows 1. In a bed, a detachable end board forming part of the bed frame, and means for adjusting said end board to and supporting said end board in a position forming a table, said means including a pair of links connected at one end to said end board, a pair of posts having vertical slots With Which the opposite ends of said links connect, and means upon said posts for supporting said links in a horizontal position.
2. in a bed, a frame having a pair of cor-- ner posts formed With vertically grooved inner faces, and a pair of longitudinally slotted side bars, a panel slidable in the grooves in said posts, a pair of links connected at one end to said panel and having pins at their oposite ends, a shaft supported at opposite ends in the slotted portions or the said side bars a oair of osts mounted 7 upon said shaft adjacent the respective side bars, said posts having vertical slots into which the pins on the opposite ends of said links project, projections from the upper ends of said posts extending longitudinally of the bed and forming supports for holding said links in a horizontal position.
3. In a bed, a frame having apair of corner posts formed With vertically grooved inner faces, and a pair of longitudinally slotted side bars, a panel slidable in the grooves in said posts, a pair of links connected at one end to said panel and having pins at their opposite ends, a shaft supported at opposite ends in the slotted positions of the said side bars, a pair of posts mounted upon said shaft adjacent the respective side bars, said posts having vertical slots into which the pins on the opposite ends of said links project, projections from the upper ends oi said posts extending longitudinally of the bed and forming supports for holding said links in a horizontal position, lateral oil'sets upon said posts projecting across the upper edges of said side bars, and spring pressed pins in said offsets adapted to engage in sockets in said side bars.
in a bed, a framehaving a pair of corner posts formed with vertically grooved inner faces, and a pair of longitudinally slotted side bars, a panel slidable in the grooves in said posts, a pair of links connected at one end to said panel and having pins at their opposite ends, a shaft supported at opposite ends in the slotted positions of the said side bars, a pair of'posts mounted upon said shaft adjacent the respective side bars, said posts having vertical slots into which the pins on the opposite ends of said links project, projections from the upper ends of said posts extending longitudinally of the bed and forming supports for holding said links in a horizontal position, lateral oii'sets upon said posts projecting across the upper edges of said side bars, and spring pressed pins in said offsets adapted to engage in sockets in said side bars, and
rack and pinion means for moving said shaft, and with it the said posts and panel, longitudinally of the bed.
in testimony whereof I have affixed my signature.
JOE SADLIK.
