2 Claims. (01. -53) This invention relates to an improvement in beds which consists in the novel construction hereinafter disclosed.

An object of the invention is to provide a re movable foot piece to be attached to beds of the modern type in which the foot end of the bed is at a low elevation, so that the mattress and bed clothing may be covered with a spread, or other outer cover, which will be exposed to View from the end of the bed.

Another object of the invention is to provide a foot piece of the kind mentioned which may be readily attached and detached from the bed including a support with a slidable transverse frame connected with the support together with means for positioning the frame at a plurality of elevations so that when in a depressed adjustment it will not interfere with dressing the bed with an outer cover that is exposed at the end of the bed, and, when in an upper adjustment, will serve as an abutment to hold the bed clothing in place.

Additional advantages of the construction will be readily apparent from the following detail description thereof taken in connection with the accompanying drawings, in which Fig. 1 is an end view of the construction with the frame in lower adjustment.

Fig. 2 is a View showing the construction attached to a bed with the frame in upper adjustment.

Fig. 3 is a fragmentary longitudinal section through the bed illustrating the method of attaching the foot piece and the foot piece being shown in depressed position.

Fig. 4 is a view of the same parts with the frame of the foot piece elevated.

Fig. 5 is a detail view illustrating one of the upright standards of the support in connection with the slidable upright member of the frame and the means of connecting the two so as to hold the frame at different elevations.

Fig. 6 is an edge view of the same parts.

Fig. 7 is a plan View of the lower portion of the support.

The construction of the present invention has been illustrated in connection with a bed that is provided with slats, although it should be understood that the construction of the invention may "be applied to beds having box mattresses that are parent from the description.

In the embodiment of the invention-as illustrated the device is shown attached to a bedstead that has side rails 1 connected at their forward ends with the foot portion of the bed which comprises the legs 2 and a low transverse foot board 3. ihe slats 4 are mounted trans versely of the rails 1 in suitable grooves in the usual manner. The slats 4 support the mattress 5 and uponthe mattress is the bed clothing 6. An outer cover, shown .in .dotted lines at 7, is spread over the made up bedand is adapted to be exposed at the end of the bed and cover the adjustable foot piece of the invention. The foot piece of the present invention consists, in the embodiment shown, of a bottom frame made up w of spaced side bars 8 thatare. bent at their rear ends to form U-shaped hooks 9. The bars 8 are transverselyconnected by a bar 10, the bar 10 and the bars 8 being braced by braces 11. The upright framemember for supporting the adjustable foot piece includes two upright strips 12 that are spaced apart and are formed at their lower ends with extensions 13 bent at right angles to the upright portion thereof. One of the members 10 is bolted to each of the forward ends of the members 8, respectively, by bolts 1 1- that pass through openings in the extensions 13 and through openings near the ends of said members 8. T0 the back face of the members 12 are connected transverse strips 15 which serve to cross brace the members 12 and give rigidity to the support. In front of, and spaced from, each of the members 12 are plates 16 supported by bolts 17 passing through the members 12 and 16. Pins 18 project through the members 12 and 16 by which they are supported; said pins being arranged in two parallel vertical series, as clearly illustrated in Fig. 5.

A frame comprising a bottom member 19, a top member 20 and side members 21, is mounted to slide in the support so that it may be adjusted to difierent elevations. The manner in which the frame is connected with the support, in the embodiment shown, includes a pair of vertical strips 22 attached to the frame, said strips extending well below the edge of the bottom member 19 of the frame. These strips are provided with notches 23 in one side edge, the notches being suitably spaced. The frame may have vertical bracing by providing an additional strengthening strip 24, if desired.

The extended ends of the strips 22 fit into the space between the members 12 and 16 and are located between two series of pins 18. The frame may, therefore, be raised and set so that the notches 23 rest over and seat upon the pins 18. When it is desired to adjust the device to the lower position the extensions of the members 22 are disengaged from the pins and the frame is dropped to the lower adjustment, as shown in Figs. 1 and 3. When it is desired to elevate the frame above the upper plane of the bed when made up the frame is raised and the notches engaged with selected ones of the pins 18, thereby holding the frame inlselected elevated adjustment. In order to prevent the displacement of the frame member it is connected with the support by chains 25, one end of each chain being attached to the support and the other end to a corner of the frame member.

In assembling the device with the bed construction the members 8 are positioned so; that the hooks 9 engage around onebr-more slats ofthe bed. The mattress is then placed in position and the adjustable framesupport is held in a vertical position between the inner face of the bed end and the forward face of the mattress. Normally when the bed is made up the slida-ble frame is depressed and is, therefore, in a position so that it will not interfere with the cover of the bed clothing being positioned to hide the end of the bed. The bed in this adjustment has the appearance of the modern bed with the cover completely covering the end of the bed.

When the bed ismade up for use the outer cover may be removed and the-- frame elevated to the desired elevation,,for example, as shown in Figs. 2 and 4'... In this position the frame serves as an abutment at the end of thebed clothing and thereby prevents displacement of the same. As the. thickness of the bed clothing above the top face of the mattress varies the frame being adjustable verticallyis adapted for adjustment'so that it can be elevated to the required height abovethe plane of the bed clothing.

While I have illustrated the means of attaching the support for the frame to thebed by engaging the hooks 9 with the slats it should, of course, be understood that the vertical support for the sliding frame may be attached to any rigid part of the bed, for example, to a flange on the forward end of a box mattress.

Other variations of the construction will be readily apparent without detail description thereof, and I do not limit myself to the exact construction shown and described but what I claim and desire to secure by Letters Patent is:

1. The combination with a bed frame having side rails and slats transversely thereof, of a frame member positioned within the space de- Vfined by the side rails and having rearwardly horizontal extending arms connected with the lower portion thereof, said arms having extensions removably engaging selected ones of said slats and thereby "supporting said frame, uprights at the end of said frame having vertical guideways therein, a slidable frame comprising a member substantially the width of the bed frame-and armsextending.downwardly from said member, said arms being adapted to slide. in said guideways in saidfirst named frame, and means interposed in said guideways constituting supports for holding said arms in selected vertical adjustments. 7

2. The combination with a .bed frame, amattress supported within the frame and a relatively narrow foot-board spaced from said mattress, of an attachment having a vertical support-removably attached to the bed frame between said foot-board and the end .of the mattress and extending to an elevation below the mattress and said framehaving vertical .guideways therein, a

framemember substantially the width of the bed for supporting said arms in selectedvertical adjustments.
