Application January 25, 1949, Serial No. 72,646 4 Claims. (Cl. -131) This invention relates to new and useful improvements in bed constructions and the primary object of the present invention is to provide a bed having removable supporting legs and a vertically adjustable head board.

Another important object of the present invention 1s to provide an attachment for bed springs including novel and improved supporting legs that are quickly and readily applied to or removed from a bed spring in a convenient manner.

Another feature of the present invention is to provide an attachment for box springs that is extremely light in weight to permit the box springs on which the same is secured to be conveniently carried or moved.

Another feature of the present invention is to provide an article of the aforementioned character including supporting legs having rounded or smoothly contoured edges that provide a glider and will protect rugs, floors or persons contacted by the said legs.

A further object of the present invention is the proprovision of a bed assembly that is extremely neat and attractive in appearance.

A still further aim of the present invention is to provide an attachment for box springs that is simple and practical in construction, strong and reliable in use, relatively inexpensive to manufacture, and otherwise well adapted for the purposes for which the same is intended.

Other objects and advantages reside in the details of construction and operation as more fully hereinafter described and claimed, reference being bad to the accompanying drawings forming part hereof, wherein like numerals refer to like parts throughout, and in which:

Figure 1 is a perspective view showing the present invention applied to a box spring (shown in dotted lines);

Figure 2 is a vertical sectional view showing the manner in which the head board is secured to the box spring;

Figure 3 is a front elevational view of the head board used in conjunction with the present invention;

Figure 4 is a fragmentary vertical sectional view showing the manner in which the auxiliary legs are anchored to the box spring; and,

Figure 5 is a perspective view of one of the base members or fixed supports for the head board.

Referring now to the drawings in detail, wherein for the purpose of illustration, there is disclosed a preferred embodiment of the present invention, the numeral represents a box spring, substantially rectangular in configuration, and having the usual covering 12 and lower substantially rectangular frame construction 14.

Removably secured to the corners of the frame construction 14 are corner legs that are designated generally by the numeral 16. These corner legs include concavoconvex, preferably aluminum plates 18 having tapered lower portions 20. The lower ends of the legs 16 are turned inwardly to provide flat bearing flanges 22 or gliders and the upper portions of the legs 16 are in tegrally formed with fiat and arcuate anchoring flanges 24 having spaced, fastener receiving apertures 26 permitting screws or the like to be employed for securing the flanges 24 to the corners of the frame 14.

To further aid in the supporting of the box spring 10, there is provided a plurality of auxiliary legs 28 that are also constructed of preferably aluminum material. These auxiliary legs 28 include channel members 30 having tapered lower ends 32 that are integrally formed with lower bearing flan es 34. The upper portions of the channel members 30 are integrally formed with anchoring flanges 36 having apertures 38 that receive suitable fasteners for securing the auxiliary legs to the sides of the frame 14 and intermediate the ends of the box spring 10.

Although two of the auxiliary legs are sufficient, in conjunction with the corner legs 16, to support the box frame, a mattress and persons thereon, any suitable number could be utilized without departing from the spirit of the present construction, if such is found necessary or desirable.

The numeral 40 represents the base members or anchor members that are used in conjunction with the present invention generally and which include angle iron members 42 that are bent at their centers to assume arcuate shapes that extend between the corners of the box spring 10 and the head end thereof. The base members 40 are provided with any suitable number of openings or apertures 44 at their ends that receive fasteners whereby the same are secured to the head and sides of the frame 14.

Mounted or otherwise rigidly secured to the portions 46 of the members 40 that are secured to the head end part of the frame 10, are angle members or brackets 48 having upstanding legs 50. Any suitable number of openings 52 are provided in the legs 50 for a purpose which will later be more fully described.

The numeral 54 represents a head board of any suitable shape having a plurality of depending straps 56 secured to each rear face by fasteners or the like 58. The free end portions 60 of the straps 56 are provided with a plurality of longitudinally spaced apertures 62 that selectively register with openings 52 in the legs 50, providing for adjusting the height of head boards.

Bolts 64 are inserted through opposed openings in the straps 56 and the legs 50 and receivably engage nuts 66 for retaining the head board secure to the legs 50.

It is noted that the base member 40, head board 54 and straps 56 are constructed of light weight metal, such as aluminum, to reduce the overall weight of the completely assembled bed and thereby permit the same to be conveniently moved.

The legs 16, 28 and head board 58 are finished like hard grained wood, any color, by paint, shellac or any other such coloring, to match or contrast with the remainder of the furniture associated with the instant bed construction.

In view of the foregoing description taken in conjunction with the accompanying drawings it is believed that a clear understanding of the device will be quite apparent to those skilled in this art. description is accordingly deemed unnecessary.

It is to be understood, however, that even though there is herein shown and described a preferred embodiment of the invention the same is susceptible to certain changes fully comprehended by the spirit of the invention as herein described and the scope of the appended claims. Having described the invention, what is claimed as new 1s:

1. In a bed structure, a box spring having corners at the head end thereof, legs fixed to and supporting said corners, a pair of bars fixed to the bottom of the box spring and extending diagonally of said corners between said legs, angle brackets fixed to said bars and having upstanding ends behind said head end between said legs, and a head board having means thereon attached to said upstanding ends.

2. In a bed structure, a box spring having corners at the head end thereof, a pair of bars fixed to the bottom of the box spring and extending diagonally of said corners, angle brackets fixed to said bars and having upstanding ends behind said head end, and a head board having means thereon attached to said upstanding ends.

3. A head board structure for a box spring of the type having corners at the head end thereof comprising a pair of bars attachable to the bottom of the box spring at said head end diagonally of said corners, angle brackets fixed to said bars and having upstanding portions adapted to be disposed behind said head end, and a head board having means thereon attached to said upstanding ends.

4. A head board structure according to claim 3, said means comprising straps de ending from said head board and bolted to said upstanding ends.
