2 Claims.
This invention relates to an article of furniture.
one object of our invention is to provide a combination article in which the seat is detachably connected to the table in such a manner as to facilitate the attachment and detachment of a raised seat and yet rigidly hold the seat in position when the parts are united.
Another object is to provide a construction in which the seat is detachably connected to the table in such a manner that it cannot be accidentally detached and without any separate latch for connecting the parts.
Another object is to provide a latch between the frame of the seat and the frame of the table, which latch is entirely concealed beneath the table top.
Another object is to provide a construction in which the table top is flush with or extends over the supporting frame so that there is no crevice between the two parts in which the fingers of a child might get caught.
Another object is to provide a table having a rigid frame with feet so constructed as to enable the frame to be pushed around the floor without scratching the floor or tearing the carpet.
Fig. l is a front view of a table with a detachable frame for a seat.
Fig. 2 is a side view of the same.
Fig. 3 is an enlarged sectional view showing the connection between the table top and the frame of the seat.
Fig. 4 is an exploded perspective view of parts of the frames for the table and the seat.
Fig. 5 is a view of a modified form of supporting frame for the seat.
Fig. 6 is a fragmentary view showing a modified construction of the table top.
The frame of the table includes a front bar H), a rear bar H and two side bars l2 and l3. These side bars are preferably parts of a supporting structure having legs I4 and i5 to which the bars l and I l are preferably secured in any suitable manner. The frame also includes side bars I and Il which are of channel form and connected to bars l0 and l l for instance by welding and which may also be secured to the side bars [2 and i3 to form a more rigid construction. The legs are preferably outwardly curved as at l8 to provide smooth feet. The table top Is is supported on the channnel bars l6 and H.
The seat 20 is supported by a resilient frame having an upper member 2| and side members 22, 22 and lower members 23, 23 which are connected to the upper members 22 by semi-circular curved portions. The members 23, 23 are adapted to slide in the channels l6 and H above the front bar [0 and beneath the table top where they are supported by the channel irons in such a manner that they cannot be dislodged except by deliberate pulling out of the frame forward of the front bar In.
The supporting frame for the seat may be formed as shown in Fig. 5 in which the members 22, 22' are secured to the bottom of the seat and Ellie members 23', 23' are connected by a rear bar It will be understood that the bars ill, i I, I2 and I3 will preferably be formed of metal tubing and that the channel bars l6 and I! will be formed of sheet steel for strength.
The table top l9 may be of any suitable design and may extend across the upper edge of the side bars [2 and I3 as shown in Fig. 6.
The seat 20 may be provided with an upholstered raised portion 24 if desired or may be provided with an opening above a commode (not shown) between the seat and the table top.
If desired, a bolt 25 may be mounted on the front bar l0 beneath the table top with a handle 26 by which the bolt may be moved to insert it into an opening or recess 21 in the lower member 23 of the frame of the seat. not essential to the safe connection of the seat frame to the table frame, it may be provided to afford additional security and prevent unintentional separation of the seat frame from the table frame. Such a bolt may be spring-pressed as shown in Fig. 3 in a conventional manner and the handle held in an angular recess.
We claim:
1. A combination of a table and seat in which the table has a top with four legs, two in front and two in rear, the lower ends of the legs flaring outwardly to form corner feet, cross bars con necting the front legs and the rear legs respectively beneath the table top, channel bars connecting the front legs and the rear legs respechaving upper and lower side bars, the lower side bars of the seat frame being slidable on said channel bars beneath said table top and a latch bolt carried by one of said cross bars and detachably engaging one of the lower side bars of the seat frame beneath said table top.
2. An article of furniture comprising a table, a chair and means removably mounting said chair on said table; said table comprising a top having a pair of straight oppositely disposed edges, a pair of similar supports of inverted U- shape having straight web portions extending along said straight edges of the top and connect- While such a bolt is ing the legs of the supports, and spaced parallel rods each connected to the upper portions of said supports; said chair comprising a seat and a support therefor comprising a strip of material shaped to form two similar members of U-shape. each having one straight leg arranged to engage the ground and a secondleg secured to said seat, said straight legs being parallel; and said chair mounting means comprising a pair of channel members disposed below said table top and rigidly secured to said rods andto said straight" Web portions and having eacha recess removahly receiving one of the straight legs of the chair Number v :11 REFERENCES CITED The following references are of record in the zfile of this patent:
