- 1 Claim; (Cl. 155-127) The present invention relates to improvement? in chair attachments-for converting a chair of ordinary construction to a chair for use by babies and children during feeding.

The primary purpose of the invention is to provide an attachment-comprising a tray and.

back member which is adapted to be secured to the conventional chair so that the chair may be used for children in lieu of the costly high-chair now commonly used.

Other objects and advantages of the invention will become apparent during the course of the following description of the accompanying drawing, wherein,

Figure 1 is a side elevational view of a conventional chair illustrating the attachment in side elevation secured thereto;

Figure 2 is a front elevational view of the device embodying the invention, illustrating the same applied to the conventional armless chair;

Figure 3 is a vertical cross-sectional view taken on line 3-3 of Figure 1, looking in the direction of the arrows, illustrating in detail, the manner in which the tray is adjustably supported;

Figure 4 is a vertical cross-sectional view taken on line 4-4 of Figure 1, looking in the direction of the arrows, showing the manner in which the seat back is also 'adjustably secured to the detachable frame; I

Figure 5 is a'top elevational view of the frameor attachment removed from the chair; and

Figure 6 is a bottom plan view of the tray showingthe same removed from the frame.

In the drawing, wherein forthe purpose of The invention comprises a rectangular frame formed of tubular metal comprising parallel side bars l4 connected at one end, as at l5, by a similarly formed tubular member or bar. The parallel side bars H are spaced 9. distance slightly smaller than the width of the chair seat 9 so that the. frame bars will be substantially within the confines thereof. The opposite ends of the parallel bars H are return bent as at It and terminate in a U-shaped portion l1. At the bend IS. a tubular'frame member I8 is adapted to connect each of the side frame bars 14 and said connecting bar I8 is welded or otherwise secured in place and is adapted to hold the forward ends of the rectangular frame in equi-distantly spaced relation.

The lower leg of the U-shaped portion I I is adapted to receive one end of an angular foot member l9 which isround in cross section and is substantially the same diameter as the bore in the tubular member ll so that the parts may be inter-fitted and held in place by a screw 20 passmay be apertured as at 24 for receiving a flexible illustrating the invention and wherein like reference characters will be employed to designate like parts throughout the same, the reference character 5 will generally be employed to designate a chair having a pair of front legs 3 and'rear legs I continued upwardly as at 8 to form the frame work for a back. The back formed by the contlnuations of the legs. as at 8, are connectedas at H and i2 by horizontal back members and the horizontal back members are connected by a relatively wide back strip l3. The above structure is'typical of a present-day armless chair such as is used-in dining rooms.

The lower end of 'the foot member 2| is adapted to rest on a forward corner of the chair seat 9 and may be attached thereto by passing a flexible element 22 through an opening in the foot member 2| and around the forward leg 6.

Similarly, the rear ends of the frame bars l4 tying element 25 which may be passed around the chair back rails 8 as shown in Figure 1.

Slidably mounted between the forward ends of the parallel frame bars I4 is a tray 28 having a marginal upstanding flange 21 to prevent displacement of articles such as dishes and the like from being thrown from the tray and each end may be curved as at 30 so that the tray may be pushed rearwardly into close contact with the child to prevent drippings and the like from falling on the floor or in the lap of the child.

' Slidably mounted between the rear ends of the parallel tubular side' bars I4 is an adjustable back r 3f having secured adjacent each end thereof lug an provldedwith a tubular slide a: which is free to move on a tubular side bar I! and is 9 adapted to be held in an adjusted position by means of a set screw 35 threaded therein so that the inner end will frictionally engage the tubular bar. The lower end of the back 3| is adapted to rest on the rear end of the chair seat 9 while the upper edge of the back BI is adapted to rest on the vertical chair back piece 13 in the rearmost position of the back 81. A strap 36 has its ends connected to the sides of the back 3| and is provided with a buckle 3'! for adjusting the length of the strap which is adapted'to encircle the child and hold the child in the chair. Thechair back 3| may he slid forwardly if desired so that the child's legs will hang over the forward edge of the chair seat 9 and the back 3| will provide sufficient resting surface in the proper position for the child's back. After the back has been adjusted, the tray 20 may be adjusted so that the child will properly sit while feeding or being fed. 1

It is to be understood that the form of th I invention herewith shown and described isto taken as the preferred-embodiment of the same and that various changes in the shape, size and arrangement of parts may be resorted to without departing from the spirit and scope of the invention as claimed.

I claim:

A chair attachment comprising a tubular frame having parallel side bars, a rear bar connecting the side bars, the forward ends of the side bars being downwardly and reversely bent, vertical foot portions connected to the 'reversely bent frame portions, a front cross bar connecting the downwardly bent portions, .a tray slldably connected to the forward ends of the side bars, an auxiliary back rest slidably connected to the rear ends of the side bars, and means detachably connecting the rear of the frame to the chair and the lower ends of the foot portions to the front of the chair.
