To all whom it may concern:

Be it known that I, FinNns'r T. Nonnnic, a citizen of the United States of America, residing at l/Vittenberg, in the county of Perry and State of Missouri, have invented new and useful Improvements in Extension-Tables, of which the following is a specification.

The object of the invention is to provide a new and novel form of extension table in which the extension leaves when not in use are contained in an appropriate space between the top of the table and the frame supporting the top. T 0 this end the invention comprises a frame having a top mounted thereon and leaves for increasingthe area of the top. Unique means is provided for raising and lowering the top and for extending one or the other of the leaves both the latter being operable independently. The top is raised only for the purpose 'of permitting the extension of the leaves and when such extension is effected the top may be moved back to normal position.

A further object of the invention is to provide a device of this character, which is simple in construction, durable and effectlve in operation and inexpensive to manufacture.

Other and further objects appear in the following description, wherein the invention is set forth in detail.

To the exact construction in which it is shown and described, the invention is not to be restricted. The right is reserved to make such changes or alterations as the actual reduction to practice may suggest, in so far as such changes or alterations are compatible in spirit with the annexed claim.

The same numerals of reference designate the same parts throughout the several figures of the drawings, wherein:

Figure 1 is a view in side elevation of the improved table with the leaves in extended position.

Fig. 2 is a bottom plan View of the structure of Fig. 1, the legs being removed, however, and the upper portions of the legs being shown in section.

Fig. 3 is a longitudinal sectional view showing theleaves in closed position.

Fig. 4.- is a section on the line 4-4 of Fig. 1.

Fig. 5 is a section on the line 5-5 of Fig. 1.

Fig. 6 is a perspective view of the crank rod used for elevating and lowering the top to conform to the shape of a hole to permit its sliding freely through the said hole. This supportlng member 4; at the upper end connects with the table top 5 and supports the latter in raising and lowering the same. This raising and lowering is effected by means of a crank rod 6 which is journaled for rocking movement in the opposite longitudinal side members of the frame 1, one end of this crank rod terminating in a square or other polygonal head '7 for the reception of a crank wrench 8 by means of which the crank rod may be readily rocked. This crank rod 6 is formed with two spaced U-shaped portions 8 constituting cranks and these cranks straddle the support 4 hereinbefore referred to, receiving on their extremities the ends of a U-shaped member 9 whose legs are pivotally connected to the crank portions 8 and whose transverse portion extends through. and pivotally connects with the support 4-. It will thus be observed that angular movement imparted to the crank shaft 6 will serve to raise and lower the top 5, the height to which the top can be raised being limited to the length of the cranks 8 and the point to which the top can be lowered being limited to the contact of its under surface with the upper surface of the leaves 10 or the rails 11 on which the leaves 10 are carried, each clearly indicated in Figs. 1 and 3.

The rails 11 of which there are four, two to carry one leaf l0 and two to the other leaf are disposed in pairs for sliding movement from opposite ends of the frame 1, these two pair of rails being so positioned that their inner ends will pass each other as they are moved in and out, as clearly indicated in Fig. 2. The rails 11 move in slightly inclined planes with respect to the frame 1 and the opposite end pieces of the frame on their upper edges are notched, as indicated at 12 to provide clearance spaces for the rails, both the end pieces of the frame on their upper edges and the plate 3 on its upper face carrying guide pins 13 projecting into slots 14% in the rails to hold them properly alined. Each of the rails 11 is formed with a plurality of rack teeth 15, which are in mesh with gears 16, the latter being carried on shafts 1? journaled in opposite side pieces of the frame and projecting from one side of the latter to permit their polygonal ends 18 being engaged by the crank wrench 8 when the latter is not in use with the crank rod 6. Obviously, the turning of the shafts 17 by means of a crank 8 will serve to move the rails 11 longitudinally with the result that the leaves 10 are moved outwardly from the frame 1 or back in a position on top of the latter depending on the direction in which the shafts 17 are turned.

In the use of the invention, if it be desirednot to use the leaves 10, the latter are moved back on top of the frame by turning the shaft 17 as aforesaid, the top 5 having been first raised by means of the crank rod 6.

The raising of the top will permit free movement of the leaves to the inner orouter position, and when in the former position, the crank rod 6 may be operated to bring the top down on top of the leaves, when the leaves are in a closed position so that the top alone of the table may be employed. hen it is desired to use the leaves the crank rod 6 is operated to raise the top 5 and either one of the leaves, or both, moved to extended position for the necessary operation of its attendant shaft17. The extended position having been obtained, the top 5 may be brought back to normal position which, if both leaves be extended will be a position abutting the edges of the leaves with its underface lying on top of the rails 11 or if but one leaf be extended, in a position where the tops one edge will abut one edge of the extendedleaf and lie on top of the rails thereof, the remainder of the top lying on the upper face of the leaf not so extended.

The invention having been described, what is claimed as new and useful is An extension table comprising a frame, a top carried by the frame, asupporting member for the top, said supporting member be- 55 ing slidably mounted in the frame for vertical movement therein, a crank rod journaled in the frame andprovided with a pair of spaced cranks straddling the supporting member, a U-shaped member having its 60 main portion passing through the support- 4 ing member and rockingly connected thereto and the extremities of its legs pivotally connected to the crank portion of the crank rod, means for operating the crank rod, and eX- .5 tension leaves movable from positions below the top to positions in the same plane with the latter, the crank rod serving to elevate and lower thetop to permit the extending or retracting of the leaves.
