CARL HELLEB, AOIF NEW YORK, N. Y.
` COMBINATION BED AND TABLE Application led August 14, 1922. Serial No. 581,619.
To all whom t my cof/wem:
Be it known that I, CARL HELLER a citizen of Hungary, residing at New Fork, in the county of New York and State of New York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Combination Beds and Tables, of which the'following is a specification.
This invention relates generally to articles of furniture, having particular reference to a combination device adapted for use either as a bed or table, the invention having for its object to provide a simple combination device of this type, a further specific object relating to the proper alining for use of a pair of spring sections one of which slidesunder the other when not in use.
For further comprehension of the invention,- and of the obj ects and advanta s thereof, reference will be had to the ollowin description and accompanying drawings, an to the appended claims in which the various novel features of the invention are more particularly set forth.
Fig. 1 of the drawings is a perspective view of my improved device showing it arranged for use as a table.
F1g. 2 is a like view showing it arranged for use as a bed.
Fig. 3 is a longitudinal vertical sectional view of the device, showing the movable section drawn out for use as a bed, but not having reached its-full extended position.
Fig. 4 is a transverse vertical sectional view taken on the line 4 4 of Fig. 3.
Fig. 5 is a fragmentary pers ective view part of the head of the ed.
As here embodied my improved combination bed and table comprises two mai-n sections or elements one of which is made up of four legs 10 between the upper portions of which extend rigid joining panels which extend around the back as at 11 and sides as at 12, but not along the front, the back 11 corresponding, to the foot of the bed. The legs 10 are -further braced by the cross pieces 13. t
The other` section comprises a pair of legs 14 of less transverse spacing than the legs 10 and united by a rigid jolnin panel 11'. These parts form the head of t e bed from which tprojects a rigid lhorizontal frame 16 'adapte bers 17 on the side panels 12, the frame 16 having a` down turned lip 18 on its edge to engage at its sides in guide memwhich .engages behind one of the--cross bars' elasticity, the ends of these bands being secured to the side panels 12.
Pivotally connected at their lower ends to the frame 1 6 are pairs of parallel links 25 which connect at their upper ends to a pair of side bars 26 united by a crosspiece 27 at the end corresponding to the head of the bed,
and havin their other ends upturned as at 26. A be spring section 28 is attached at one end to the cross piece and at its opposite end'to elastic bands 22 attached to the end elements 26. of the side bars.: The parts are so proportioned that when the side bars 26 rest on the frame 16, the links 25 are o'bliquely inclined, while the .spring section 28 is slightl lower than the section 20. Fixed to the si e panels 12 and bars 26 respectively are sto members 30 and 31 which engage each ot er when the parts are fully extended to bed forming position.
To form the top of the table I provide a member 34 of suitable sha e which is hinged to the panel 11 and whic ma assume the horizontal position shown in ig. 1 or the vertically extended position shown in Fig. 3 where it ormsthe upper-.portion of the head of the bed. The member may be held in this lastl-ljfpesition by sliding bolts such .hinged thereto by a hinge 37 whose eye is in the orm of a slot in which the pintle ena s. g Fhen the device is to be used as a table the arts are placed in the positioning shown inl ig. 1, the frame element 16, carrying the s'pringsection 28, lbeing slid inward on the guides 17, the panel 11 assuming a position complementaryrto the panels 11, 12. When the device is to be used as abcd the table top 34 is turned up, and the` frame 16 slid outwardly. As the latter approaches its outermost position the stops 30 on the bars 26 e age the stops 31 on the panels 12, arresting t e outward movement of the side bars carrying the spring section 28, cans-g ing the links 25 to swing to a vertical position and raising the spring section 28 to the level of the section 20. The parts are preferably arranged so that the links swing slightly past the vertical before the lip 18 strikes the crosspiece 13, obviating the need of an locking means to hold the side bars raise Having thus described my invention what I claim as new and desire to protect by Letters Patent of the United States is as follows:
1. In a device of the class described, a pair of frames one of which is slidable on the other, a bed springsupport mounted for up and down movement on said slidable frame, a bed sprin section mounted on the other frame, a be spring section mounted on said support, and co-operating stop members mounted respectively on said other frame and the said support and adapted to cause the said support to be moved automatically upward by the final extension movement of said slidable frame.
2. A combination bed and table comprising a pair of main elements slidable upon one another, and separate spring sections carried by the respective elements, one of said spring sections being'adapted to slide under the other, and means for raising" said rst section to the level of the other section, said means bein adapted to act automati- .cally during the nal extension movement to bed forming position of one element upon the other. U v
3. A combination bed and table comprising a pair of main elements slidable upon one another, a horizontal frame forming part of one of the said elements, guides on the other elements to slidably receive said frame, a spring section on said last element labove said guides, a pair of side bars located above said frame and connected by parallel links thereto, a second spring section mounted on said side bars, and co-operating stop members on said side bars and the second mentioned main element adaptedv to engage each other and cause said side bars to be raised as the said frame reaches the outward limit of its movement in said guides.
4. A combination bed and table` comprising a pair of main elements slidable upon one another, a horizontal frame forming part of one of the said elements, vguides on the other elements to slidably receive said frame, a spring section on said last element above said guides, a pair of side bars located above said frame and connected by parallel links thereto, a second spring section mounted on said side bars, and cooperating stop members on said side bars and the second mentioned main element adapted to enga e each other and cause said side bars to e raised as the said frame reaches the outward limit of its vmovement in said guides, and a table top hinged to the first mentioned main element. v
In testimony whereof I have airlxed my signature.
CARL HELLER.
