COMBINATION BED AND TABLE.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Feb. 26, 1907.
Application filed September 22, 1906. Serial No. 335,795.
T aZZ whom, it may concern:
Be it known that I, EDWARD PETERS, of the city of Hamilton, entworth county, in the Province of Ontario, Canada, and being a subject of the King of England, have in vented certain new and useful Improvements in a Combination Bed and Table, of
which the following is a full, clear, and exact description, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and to use the same, reference being had to the accomp anying drawings, which illustrate the preferred form of the invention, though it is to be understood that the invention is not limited to the exact details of construction shown and described, as it is obvious that various modifications thereof will occur to per sons skilled in the art.
This invention relates to combination furniture, and comprises in a unitary structure a bed and table.
The object of the invention is to provide a simple, economical, and durable unitary article of furniture which may be used as a table during the day-time and which during the night or on occasions when required may be used as a bed.
In the accompanying drawings, in which similar characters of reference indicate corresponding parts, Figure 1 is a perspective view of the invention set up for use as a bed, with parts broken away for purposes of illustration and with the head and foot boards of the bed in dotted position for use as a tabletop. Fig. 2 is a transverse sectional view of Fig. 1 looking toward the footboard of the bed. Fig. 3 is a fragmentary longitudinal sectional view.
Referring to the parts, 1 1 are the legs or posts used for supporting the structure, each of which is longitudinally slotted, as at 2.
3 and 4 are respectively the side rails and end rails of the bed, on the latter of which are secured by suitable hinges the headboard 5 and footboard 6 of said bed, said boards being connected to the end rails by the hinges 7.
It will be observed that the posts 1 are connected at the ends of the bed by crossrails 8, which serve as closures for the slots 2, before referred to. Connected to the side rails intermediate the cross-rails 8 are members 9 9 and 10 10, to the former of which are hinged the flaps or mattress-stops 11 11 and to the latter of which are connected the stringers 12. These mattress-stops 11 are useful to prevent longitudinal shifting of the zontal alinement.
bedding when the device is used as a bed, in which event they are secured in vertical position by the buttons 13 on cross-rails 8 or by any suit able means which may be substituted therefor.
Secured to the under side of the members 10 10 and 12 12 are clips 14, by which are secured suitable shafting 15 16. The shaft 15 is preferably squared on its outer free end to permit placing thereon a crank 17 to rotate said shaft, on which are bevel-gears 18, which mesh with corresponding beveled gears 19 on the shafts 16, as best shown in b ig. 2.
On each end of the shafts 16 should be secured a pinion 21, in mesh with a vertical rack 22, which is secured to each post, so that as the crank 17 rotates the shaft 15 said racks and pinions will raise and lower the side rails, end rails, headboard, footboard, guards 11, and connected parts, so that the end rails may occupy the elevated position shown in dotted lines in Fig. 3, thereby carrying the hinges 7 to the plane of the upper face of the cross-rails 8, in which position the head and foot boards may be folded to a horizontal position, as shown by dotted lines in Figs. 1 and 3, where they will conveniently serve as a table-top, the slots in the posts 1 serving as guides for the side rails at all times.
The design of the head and foot boards is immaterial, with the exception that their upper edges should be of such contour that they will exactly match when brought into a hori- It will be observed that the dotted line in Fig. 1 shows the line of juncture of said headboard 5 and footboard 6. As the longer headboard will form a better support than the footboard, the meeting edges thereof (the top edges) are preferably beveled, as that the headboard may be first placed in a horizontal position and the footboard subsequently matched therewith to form a smooth table-surface. W hen used as a bed, the hooks 26 on the posts 1 engage with loops or eyes on the head and foot boards to hold said head and foot boards in vertical position.
The invention is capable of various modifications in form and proportion, and I wish it distinctly understood that I claim all such modifications as are within the scope of the following claims.
Having described my invention, what I claim is 1. In a combined bed and table, vertically-slotted supporting guide-posts, side rails extending therethrough and therebeyond at each end, end rails, head and foot boards hinged to said end rails and means for elevating said side and end rails.
2. In a combined bed and table, vertically-slotted supporting guide-posts, side rails extending therethrough and therebeyond at each end, end rails connected to said side rails, head and foot boards hinged to said end rails and means for locking said head and foot boards in vertical position.
3. In a combined bed and table, slotted supporting guide-posts, side rails extending through said slots at each end, end rails, head and foot boards hinged to said end rails, mattress-guards carried With said rails and means for simultaneously elevating said rails, head and foot boards and mattressstops.
4. In a combined bed and table, verticallyslotted supporting-posts, vertically-movable side and end rails guided by said posts and extending therebeyond, means for moving said rails vertically, foldable end members carried by said rails and adapted to serve either as end boards of a bed or as a tabletop, and mattress-stops movable vertically With said rails.
5. In a combined bed-and table verticallyslotted supporting-posts, vertically-movable side rails guided by said posts and extending therebeyond, end rails, racks and pinions for moving said rails vertically and a plurality of foldable end members carried by said rails at each end of said rails, some of Which are adapted to serve either as end boards of a bed or as a tabletop, and some of which are adapted to serve as mattress-stops When in vertical position.
In Witness whereof I have hereunto set my hand in the presence of two Witnesses.
EDWARD PETERS.
