' 3e it l-I11 WIllllili hl ahlilAN bur. (nun ('iAll- Max. a citizen of the l nited ir itates residing: at Palladelphia in the remit of lihiladelphia and tit-ate oi" Pennsylvania, have inrented new and nselul l'niproreinents in Bedsteads. ot' which the Following is a specilirat-ion.
The invention relates to beds. and more 1iartieularl to llt(lSlPll(lS. and has for an. object to provide an extension bedstead that can be, quickly and conveniently clnlnged From a single to a double bedstead and which in either its normal single bedstead position or in its extended position will present a neat and e'llectivev appearance and not divulge to the casual observer that it can be changed from a single to a double bedstead or vice versa.
The invention eoin 'irehends among (fit-i161. Features the provision ot a bedstei'ul which in view of its novel construction and arrangement will be strong and dl'lrable and cannot readily get out ol? order and hich turthern'lore on account of the simplicity of the construction can be readily cleaned and kept in sanitary condition Still further objects of the invention reside in a. bedstead which. aside 'troin being supported by the usual :lou r posts, forming a part of the construction, will be supported by additional uprights or auxiliary legs when the bedstead in its extendml or open position, the head and foot boards furthermore being so formed and arranged with re spect to the head and toot posts that the bedstead when in normal or extended position. will appear as any other rigid term of bedstead, single or double. and not capable of being extended from its single to a double bedstead or vice versa In the further disclosure oi the invention reference is to be had to the accompanying drawings. constituting; a part of this specifi 'ation. in which similar characters of re-l erence denote corresponding parts in all the views, and in which,
Figure 1 is a perspective view oi. the in rention, showing it arranged as a single bedstead.
Fig 2 is a verticalv longitudinal sectional view taken through the bedstead showing it in double or extended formation.

Fig. 7 is a similar view showing the arrangement oi the head or toot boards when the bedstead is in its extended or double position.
ict'erring: more particularly to the views. the bedstead is shown in its single position in Fig. 1 and is indicated in its entirety by the numeral 10, the main framework of the bedstead consisting essentially of the head and foot posts 11 and the side rails 12 which ha ie their ends rigidly secured in the head and toot posts. f v'ecured to the inner tacos at the side rails are strengthening ledges or elen'usnts 1 and cooperating with the side rail a re horizontally (llSPOHWl transversely extending cross pieces Ll. two of the cross pieces being extended from each side rail toward the other side rail With their free. ends adapted to rest upon ledges 15 on the side rails when the bedstead is in its single position. the Free ends oithe cross pieces extended from one side rail. in this instance. being; adapted to abut against the opposite side rail. lt will also be noted that the cross pieces are arranged in pairs with the cross pieces of one pair disposed adjacentthe head end at the bedstead and spaced apart to extend relatively parallel in opposite directions while the cross pieces of the other pair are disposed adjacent the foot end of the bedst ad and spaced apart to extend relatively parallel in opposite directions. The contiguous faces of the cross pieces in each pair are formed with grooves Ill substantially T-shaped in cross Formation and interposed between the cross pieces in ea h pair a slide 17 having longitudinal T-shaped ledge portions 18 operating in the "l'-shaped grooves 16. To prevent relative displacement; of the interfitting cross pieces and slides. stirrups 19 have their inner ends secured to the slides in each instance, said stllIHPS projecting beneath the cross pieces and having their free ends turned up as at 20. the stirrups being; secured to the under sides of the slides. Projecting pins 21 on the outermost cross pieces in each set or pair are adapted to be engaged by the stir rups passing beneath the outermost cross pieces so as to limit the extensibility oi the structure when. the side rails are moved apart, causing the slides to operate upon the cross pieces. vlounted to swing on the an der side of each slide 17 for vertical swinging movement is a leg or post 22 which, when the bedstead is in single position :liolded against the under side of its sup porting slide, and rigidly secured to the under side of one of th cross pieces in each pair, is an angular shaped bar 23 which has pivoted thereon a link 2%, the other end of which is formedwith a slot through which passes pin 26 on a bearing 2? secured to the leg or post "With this an rangement it will be seen that when the bedstead is in its single position, the legs will be folded up against the under sides at the slides 17, as shown in Fig. l, and rcterring to Fig. 5 it will be clearly seen that when the bedstead is extended the legs, through the medium of the link connection will be swung downwardly into supporting position to insure proper support oi the bed stead when it is extended.
A. panel 28 in the nature of a board, is rigidly secured to one of the head posts and a similar panel is rigidly secured to one oi the foot posts with an auxiliary board 29 mounted to swing upon the board 28 as shown, the bedstead when in normal or single position having the auxiliarly board 29 folded against the rigid board and lying flush with the outer faces of the posts, whereas when the bedstead is extended the auxiliaryboard 53!) swung upon the rigid board to occupy the inter-inning space between the post and form an enlarged panel coextensive with the new width of the en tended bedstead. Pins 30, project from one of the head posts and foot posts and extend into openings 31 in the auxiliary board when the bedstead is extended in order to insure securing the auxiliary board in rigid I position. and in proper relation to the head or foot posts against which it abuts. if desired a suitable catch such as lnchcated at nae-sense may be employed to lock the auxiliary board in its open position when. the bedstead is extended.
From the foregoing description it will. therefore be seen that the bedstead described presents a strong and durable structure, and which as shown, when in single position will present as neat and effective appearance when it is in extended position, the operation of extending the bedstead or returning it from double to single position, being SllTr ple and easily accomplished.
Having described my invention, I claim:
1,. An extensible bedstead, comprising in combination, laterally movable side portions, toldable head and foot boards secured to the opposite extremities of said side portions, inter-fitting cross pieces secured to said side portions between said head and toot boards, means for preventing any accidental displacern it of the cross pieces, auxiliary supporti. g legs hingcdly connected with the under faces of said cross pieces for horizontal. swinging movement, and a slotted connection for pivotally associating the legs with certain of the cross pieces for causing an automatic vertical swinging movement of said legs upon the adjustment of the cross pieces.
52-. en extensible bedstead comprising, in combination, laterally movable side portions, toldable head and foot boards secured to the opposite extremities of said side portions, interfitting cross pieces secured to said side portions between said head and foot boards, auxiliary supporting legs con nected with the under surfaces of certain of said cross pieces, a bar carried by the under surface of one of said cross pieces, and means having a pivotal connection with the bar and legs for establishing an automatic operation 01 the legs upon the adji "tHlQllt of said cross pieces.
in testimony whereof ll afiix my signature in presence of a witness.
ADRIAN ST. G. GARMAN. fl itness AMY B. HORN.
