2 Claims; (CI. -21) This invention relates to bed divans and it has as it's main object to provide a practical "and economical bed divan without. the use of metal springs. hinges, levers andlth'e. like.v
Inasmuch. as metalv is. out. for the duration of the .war, andrcannot belhad for rtherpurposes for which it has been. used in the manufacture of bedldivans, and "other articles of .furniture, it is an object of my invention to provide a bed divan which will give all of the usual conveniences and comforts of those in v which metal springs, hinges,.-levers and the. like are-used;
Another object oflmv invention is toprovide a =bed divan in which the backthereof is fixed; or .-rigid,v and cannot he-let down to form apart of the -bed when made down for sleeping .purposes This makes it unnecessary to pull; it out fromr-the wallin 'order to prepare :itfor sleeping purposesras wbed':
Another object of my invention: is to provide" a -rigid 'carrier support for the cushions "or mat tresses when; made-111p; as a divan; but; which canbemoved 'out to-"the 'front or "bed position; v with.
a-flexible-supporting member from rthe rearzredge of said "carriersupport 'to a" suitable support therefor in: the rear. portion ithe structure,
supportinga,member 23011813868 orx folds up'z'as said rigid carrier. support is again pushed: back into diva-n position; v
Another object of my invention: is to provide a double cushionzor: mattress structure; one upon the other," hingedly connected at their rearward adjacent; corners: with a A fabric" connection;- wherebif when said." carrier: support is pu-lle'd' GU12 tcr tli e front, or "bed; position, with? the doublemattressesathereonr thetop-mattress c'an be" turned back 'upon the extended flexible support ing' member; to "form" a bed 'niattress, ready for use asja bed. 4
Another object of my" invention-"is "to-provide a ecarrier suppvort of the character referred to which-can bemove'd on suitable wooden wheels;
if d'esiredf or moved like a" drawer, from the' divan position" out tothe bed position; and to provide I means for holding said carrier support against moving backwardly when weighti is plac'ed'upon the mattress supported by the flexible supporting member stretched thereunder by Figure 1 isa vertical sectional viewof "abed divan" embodying, my invention adjusted v to the. bed 'po'sition, with parts-shown in section;
Figure 2 'is a, similar view witlrthe parts. closed together in divan position Figure 3' i's a sectional-view -taken on.line 3 -3 of Fiig'..1, but showingith'euwheel or roller of the carrier support on its arched track and with the carrier frame free of the base members; -and Figure 4 is.- a horizontal sectional view taken on line:4-4-.of Fig. 1, with parts broken outto reduce the size. of. themfigure, andwithother partsnin plan-view.
I .will now describe in detailthe embodiment ofmy'invention-ashere shown for explanatory,
purposes.
M y invention is shown in -the form of a bed divan, having the-:base,=- or frame'members, 5, 5, all secured rigidly together and forminga rectangular frame, with the feet 6, 6, at thefour corners thereof, and with the rigid back structure 'Land the :rigid arms 8-,.8,- at each end. As 7 apart of the :backstructure, I provide at each end,frame-members-,,as: 9 and I0,rthe member l0 extending fromt-oneend to the'other; and forming the support aroundwhichthe covering H,- extending' from" the :back up over the :back
structure and down in the front thereof. andber 12;. secured between: twoside members I 3, I 3, withlitheir'upper "edgesextended above the topof said track member I 2, as seen in- Fig. 3,-ar-rd all secured in the ends of the frame'members 5, as seen 4:
Movably mounted upon-said side-members l2, to be pulled out to the position shown in Fig.1, orpushed b'ack 'to the position shown in Figx2, is a carrier support, composed of 'a frame vof rectangular form and composed of the end members; I4, andthe front'and back members I5 and .IS, all secured together and adapted to-reston the base frame members .-5, '5', when pushed back into the divan position, as in Fig. 2. Mounted on the rearward opposite ends of this carrier support, are two rollers or wheels l1, l1,
. held in any suitable manner, but to extend below the carrier support rests solidly upon the base frame members 5, 5. The wheels facilitate the movement of said carrier support by liftingits;
frame free of the base frame as said wheels runup over the arched track members l2, l2 at each end.
It will be understood, however, that this carrier support could be constructed to slide out and in without the wheels, if desired, somewhat similar to a drawer.
I provide a shoulder I8 in each of-th'e end members l3, l3, of the base, so'that'whensaid carrier support is moved outwardly to the bed position, as shown in Fig. 1, therearward end of said carrier support will dropdown in front of said shoulder l8, which will hold it against return movement inwardly until it has been tilted tofree said shoulder. This is for a purpose now to be described. Y
Attached to the rearward edge of said carrier support is a flexible supporting member I9, which is attached at its rearward'edge to a member 20 as at 2|. The member 20 extends from one end of the base frame to the other end thereof and constitutes anchor means for the rearward edge of said flexible supporting member I9,- as seen in Figs. 1 and 2. In'Fig'. 1 it is stretched outwardly, while in Fig. 2, it is collapsed in the rea of the carrier supporting frame.
Said flexible supporting member Hi can be extended from the front edge of said carrier support, if desired, as indicated, to form a covering for said support, but the rearward portion thereof forms a flexible or collapsible support for the mattress when saidsupport is pulled out to the bed position, as shown in Fig. 1.
Mounted on said carrier support are two mat tresses, 22 and'23, one on' top of the other, as seen in Fig. 2. It will be noticed'that with the double mattress arrangement, the seating comfort of the divan is greatly increased and that there will be no'hard frame at thefront edge to engage and the the underside of the legs near the knees, but that there will be real cushion comfort. These two mattresses are here shown as hinged together at their rearward adjacent corners, by fabric 24, thus avoiding the use-of metal hinges. Said mattresses are made without the usual metal springs, in keeping'with' one of the objects of thisinvention, namely, to produce a practical divan andbed without the use of any metal.
. Fig. 2 to the position shown in Fig. 1, the flexible support [9 is stretched ready to receive the back mattress and that said top mattress can simply be turned over to the back into the position shown in Fig. 1, and will rest upon said flexible support I 9, in bed position.
In order to support the outer edge of said carrier support, I have provided supporting legs, or feet, 28, pivotally attached at 29, with a shoulder formed thereon to swing under the lower edge of the frame member l6, as seen in Fig. 1. There would be one of these legs at each cuter corner of said carrier support. A friction block, as 31, can be used, if desired," to'frictionally hold' the leg up in the position shown in Fig. 2. Or the pivotal mounting can be given the required tightness to provide necessary friction for holding said leg in its raised position.
Thus I have provided a simple, practical and econor'nical divan and bed having a rigid supporting structure,.including the base, back and position and a flexible supporting member positioned thereby for supportingthe movable mattress, and with means for properly holding said carrier support in its out or bed position.
I do not limit my invention to the details of construction and arrangement as here shown and described for explanatory purposes, realizing that many changes in details can ,be made without departing from the spirit of the invention, except as I may'be limited by the hereto appended claims.
' Iclaim:
1. In a combination divan and'bed structure,
a supporting base having arched track mem bers at its ends,'a carrier support mounted on said base,-said carrier support having wheels to position and in its bed-forming position, said frame being raised free of 'saidbase by said wheels moving on said arched track members to' facilitate the movement of said carrier support from divan position'to bed-forming position, supporting means in said base rearwardly of-said carrier support when the latter is moved out to its outer bed-forming position, and double mattresses on said carrier support to move therewith;
one of said mattresses being movable rearwardly upon said supporting means in said base rearwardly of said carrier support and inthe same plane with the other of said mattresses.
2. In combination, a baseand-back' and arms forming asupporting unit, said base having arched track members at itsopposite sides, -por-' tions of said base extending above said arched trackmembers to form supporting means, a carrier support mounted onsaid base and resting upon the'portions .of said base above said a'rched track members, said carrier support having.
wheels on its under side to run onsaid arched track members, said wheels lifting said carrier support free of the portions of said base extending above said arched track membersduring the greater movement of said carrier support from. its rearward position to its outward position,
