ADJUSTABLE SOFA ARM v Filed June 20, 1927 g i fnregior:
Patented July 16, 1929.
UNITED STATES KARL KEINATH, OF AUGSBURG, GERMANY.
ADJUSTABLE SOFA ARM.
Application 'filed June 20, 1927, Serial No.
This invention relates to sofas, and more particularly to sofas which may be converted into a bed or the like by folding down one of the arms which is hinged to the sofa so that it will come in line with the seat of the same. My invention is more particularly concerned with the device which serves for folding and unfolding the arm of the sofa and keeping the same'in position, said device consisting essentially of two stops iiXed to the arm, which stops come in engagement with abutments provided on that member of said device which is fastened to the frame or body of the sofa.
A novel feature of my invention consists in that the said two stops are mounted vertically above each other, while said abutmcnts are provided on the one side ot' a flat piece of iron in such a manner, that after unfolding the arm only the lower stop will engage with said abutment and support the arm in unfolded condition together with the upholstered edge which rests on the under frame of the sofa. By the device according to my invention there will therefore be provided a snug lit between the arm in unfolded condition and the upholstering of the sofa, and in addition to this the seat of the sofa will be flush with the arm in unfolded condition.
The accompanying drawing represents an example of the new sofa constructed according to my invention, F ig. l being a vertical section through the sofa, and Fig. 2 a section according to line A-B of Fig. l.
Referring now more particularly to the drawing, the arm l is placed in horizontal position upon the under frame 5 in close proximity to the seat 4, the pin E2 being in engagei'nent with the uppermost tooth of the racl 3. The two ledges 6 will in this case come close to the rear of the rack 3, and serve as pressure receiving members for the weight of the arm l. In this manner the arm will be absolutely in fixed and secured position. By upwardly swinging the arm, the pin 2 will slide in downward direction and immediately after releasing the arm will fall back into the next tooth of the rack. According 200,205, and in Germany, .Tune 17, 1926.
to the degree of upward swinging of the arm there are provided four positions of the arm as indicated in Fig. l of the drawing. If the arm is now lifted entirely into its vertical position, the second pin 2 will engage with the uppermost tooth of the rack 3, while the pin 2 which had so far been effective will now be positioned below the rack. In this condition the pins 2 and 2 as well as the ledges G will positively secure a fixed position of the arm. It being desired to again unfold the armor to place the saine into one of the positions shown in Fig. l, said arm is turned upwards until the pin 2 will engage with the under-most tooth of the rack 3. Thereupon the arm is somewhatI moved towards the outside until the outermost edge of the arm will rest against the under frame 5. In this manner the arm will be in one of its intermediate positions. By slightly lifting the arm and by exerting a small pressure with the arm against the seat et, the arm may now again be laid immediately into its horizontal position or into any of said intermediate positions.
I claim:
l. The combination in a sofa, of an end frame and an arm mounted above said end 'trame with its lower end slidably engaging the upper face of the end frame, said end frame having a rack substantially vertically mounted near one side thereof, said rack having vertically arranged inwardly facing teeth thereon, a pin mounted on said arm adjacent the inner lower end portion thereof, said pin engaging the inner face of said rack niember and adapted to successively engage the teeth of said rack, whereby the lower outer portion of the arm may be slid along the end frame to adjust the angular position of the arm with respect to the end frame.
2. The combination, as specified by claim l, said arm having a second pin adapted to engage the uppermost tooth of the rack when the arm is in vertical position.
In testimony whereof I have atli'xed my signature.
KARL KEINATH.
