Description

Nl. OROFINO.
GARBAGE CAN. APPLICATION FILED OC. 13. 1919.
Patented Sept. 7, 1920.
tlbliTED STATES;
PreTENT OFFICE.
GARBAGE-CAN.
Application led October 13, 1919.
To all yL12/tom t may concern Be it known that I, MioHnLn URoFiNo, a citizen of the United States, and a resident of Philadelphia, county of Philadelphia, State of Pennsylvania, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Garbage- Cans, of which the following is a specification.
Some of the objects of the present invention are to provide means for preventing a removable cover for a receptacle from being pried off or loosened by dogs, cats, rodents or other animals in an attempt to reach the contents of the receptacle; to provide means for preventing a receptacle cover from being lifted directly from its receptacle; to provide a locking device for garbage cans which requires at least two movements in different directions before the cover can be removed; and to provide other improvements as will hereinafter appear.
ln the accompanying drawings Figure 1 represents a side elevation of a receptacle equipped with one form oflid locking device embodying the present invention; Fig. 2 represents a sectional detail of the locking device shown in Fg. 1; F ig. 3 represents a side elevation of one part of the lock; F ig. el represents a detail in section of the coperating lock part; and Fig. 5 represents a section of another form of the locking device.
Referring to the drawings one form of the present invention is shown as applied to a garbage can 10, of any suitable or usual shape, having a removable lid or cover 11 provided with means for preventing the cover 11 from being knocked ofi1 or removed unless manually manipulated in a certain manner.
ln order to prevent removal of the cover l1 a locking device is provided consisting of a pin l2 rigidly secured by riveting, or otherwise, to either the can body 10 or the cover l1. In the form here shown the pin 12 is made fast tothe can body 10 and is arranged to seat within an opening 13 formed in the cover 11. When so seated it is evident that the cover may not be lifted from the can body 10 since it is interloclzed therewith through the pin construction.
ln the present instance the pin 12 is also rigidly i'iXed at its projecting end in an arm 111 which is fast at one end to the can body 10 and extends upwardly in spaced relation to the body 10 in order to receive the side portion of the cover 11 in the space provided.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Sept. 7, 1:"520 semi No. 330,364.
For the purpose of causing the pin 12 to 'enter and seat wit-nin the opening 13 there is provided a guide passage 16 opening against a portion of the opening 13 and continuing therefrom a suitable distance to in` tercept a slot 1T which opens outwardly through the bottom circumferential edge 18 of the cover 11. The slot 17 and passage 16 have a width suiiicient to permit the pin 1Q and its adjuncts to readily enter and move freely therethrough until the openng 13 is reached. .hns by lotvering the cover 11 in a telescoping manner, over the top of the can body l0 and having the slot 17 positioned to straddle the pin 12, the cover l1 may be placed in position to close the can whereupon a turning movement of the cover 11 relative to the can body 10 will cause the pin 12 to be guided through the passage 1Q and seat within the opening 13.
As a means for reducing the friction between the relatively movable parts it is preferable to provide a roller 20, in the form of a sl eve, which fits snugly upon the pin 12 in a manner to freely rotate when the cover is turned. Thus, when the cover 11 is placed upon the can 10 the roller 20 freely enters the slot l? and rolls smoothly through the passage 16 and thereby overcomes any tendency for the part to bind or stick.
The present invention is particularly for garbage can closures as a means to prevent dogs, cats and other animals from working the cover or lid off in order to get at the garbage or other contents of the can, all of which is a serious nuisance in cities and crowded neighborhoods where the garbage cans are readily accessible at the rear of homes. TWhile the above described locking device is effective to prevent such animals from lifting the cover upwardly by a prying motion it is desirable to prevent the cover 10 from being turned also and to that end the wall of the passage 16 is restricted at a suitable point by the provision of cam-like projection 21. This construction narrows the passage 1G at this point to substantially the diameter of the pin 12 so that considerably more force is required to move the pin 12 past the projection 21 than could be exerted by an animal. As a further means oi preventing improper turning of the cover 11, it will be noted that the opening 13 is somewhat-greater in diameter than the width of the passage 16 so that abutments 22 are provided at the outlet from the opening 13 which malre it necessary to first lift the cover slightly before giving it a turning movement. Thus, while an animal might succeed in liti ng the lid slightly it would be beyond its powers to simultaneously give the turning movement necessary to work the pin through the passage 16.
In Fig; a modification is shown wherein the lochin T device is applied to a can of the type where the bail is already attached to the can body. ln this instance the pin 12 projects outwardly and has a free unsupported end but otherwise the construction is the saine as above described.
lt will be understood that it is desirable to employ a plurality of these locking devices with a garbage can and'in Fig. 1 the preerred construction is Vshown with two of such locking means arranged diametrically opposite. Y
-`While only two of the 'forms in which this invention may be embodied have been shown herein, it is understood that this invention is not to be limited to any specic construction, but might be embodied in various forms "without departing fromy the spirit of this linvention or the scope o1e claims.
Having thus described my invention, l claim and desire to protect by Letters Patent oit the United States:
1. i receptacle comprising a can body, a pair of arms respectively fixed. to said body at opposite sides thereof, roller bearing pins respectively journaled between said arms and said body, a bail connecting said arms and a removable cover provided at each side with an opening, a laterally disposed passage and an open ended slot alined respectively with said pins.
Q. A receptacle comprising a can body, a pair of arms respectively secured to sait body at opposite sides thereof, pins respectively'held between said arms and said body, a bail connecting said arms, and a removable cover provided at each side with an openino', a laterally disposed passage and an open ended slot alined'respectively with said pins, w iereby said pins enter said passages to lock said cover to said body.
In witness whereof l hereunto set my hand this 30th day of September, 1919.
MICHELE OROFINO.
