Fig. 2O is asectional view on .20*20 of Fig. 17.y o f Fig. 21 is a plank view of the locking 'plate used yin this embodiment.
The embodiment yshown in clusive isy constructed and is operated as follows:
the ,line
A base plateflhasa rear slot and `upwardly bent lugs 8. This base plate may be the top of one ofthe metal fram/members `of a ladyshandbag or the like..y Atop plate 1 is provided with downwardly bent lugs 5. which areconnected .to the respective lugs 3 by means of pins 6.1 All the partsof the device 'are made of anyr suitable metal or view showing the Figs. ist in;
other material and` while the device is de- `scribed as beingin the horizontal position, for convenience,y 1t 1s obvious that the' operation thereof is independent of its position. This top plate et may be a pivoted U-shaped catch of thefordinary type which overlaps the framemembers `of avladysr handbag or the like, so that the bag cannot be opened `until the plate t hasfbeenswu'ng upwardly. n f
A locking post 7 is connected to the base palte 1 yby means of .a bottom rivet-like ei:-`
ment thereof. The locking plate 9 is pro.
'vided with anyopening 1l having` a yfront locking edge. ylllhen this locking edge enters the locking recess of the post 7 ther upper plate 4' is held in the position shown in Fig. 8. llVhen the locking plate 9 is slid tension.r which passes through an opening in 'forwardly so that the Aedge of the opening 11 does notengage the locking yrecess of the post 7 then the upper plate 4L is free to turn. As shown ingFig. 6 the springy detent plate 12 is `provided with a slot 14 at the rear thereof which divides it into/two spring .y
legs.y One rkot these spring legs has a slot 17 which'`V receives a pin '16 connected to the i locking plate 9 yso that the loc'liiigplate 9 can be assembled with the springer. detent plate 12, whileV permitting a limited movement of the detent plate 1210111 the locling plate 9. AThe detent plate 12 is provided with enlargements y18 at the rear ,thereof and these enlargements 18 are provided with downwardly bent lugs 15. YVhenthe locking plate 9 is pushedinwardly, Vthese en-` largements' 18 spring outwardly or away from each other to engage the iearof the upper plate 4. The locking plate 9 is thus vrprevented from being moved forwardly to Van extent sufficient to release Yit from the to kkrelease the recess of the post 7 from the edge or wall of the opening 11. Vrflie'top of Y vthe post 7 ispr'eferably conical and projects into an opening in the upper'plate 4. The
top of the Ypost 7 may project beyond this lopening but itgwouldnot be departing from my invention' if the top of the. post A7 was either flush with or below the top yof the upper` plate 4. Since the detent plate 12 d vlits between the raised side flanges a. very compact deviceVV is provided and the detent plate 12 is held in `position at all times between theV locking plate 9 'and the top plate 4.
. f The embodiment shown in Figs. -8-14 is constructed and operates as follows:
The baseplate land the vlocking post-7v have the construction previouslydescribed. rThe-top `plate 4 and the` bottom plate 1 are provided with co-operating pintle lugs,
"which are connected to a'continuous lateral pintle 6.` asshown in Fig. V9. torsion spring 19 is mounted on the pintle 6. This torsion spring 19 consists of two yend poi'- tions connected-by aV continuous intermediate spring portion 19.VV The torsion spring y19 tends to 'turn the spring plate 4 vinto the upper. Vor open position. The locking AJlate 9 has the configuration shown in Fig.
13Y audit is provided with anv opening 11 having an angular right-hand wall which 'performs the'saine function as the straight line right-handwallof the opening 11 illustrated in Fig. 7.V The locking plate 9 -is provided' with raised rflanges 24 and 24 which fit slidably within the lguide eXtensions 8 of the top plate 4. As shown in Fig.
"13 the locking plate '9" has itsr raisedA side flangesv 24 and 24 interrupted by recesses 23 and-23. 'A manipulating member 21 is providedfwith a T-head 22 which is adapted to fit inthe recesses23 and 23. Theinterthereto.
mediate Springy part 19 of the spring 19 bears against the manipulating member 21 'and normally holds itin the position shown Vin Fig. 10, so that the T-.liead 22 prevents plate 9 the tab 29 is forced downwardly, thus tilting the member 21 until it is in the position shown in Fig. 14. The member 21 can now be pushed inwardly until the locking plater 9 lisv pushed into the kdotted line Vposition indicated in Fig. V14, in which plate 22 away from'the baseplate 1.v The intermediate plate 22 is provided with guide flanges 8, which guide the movement of the locking plate provided with a. locking opening 26%. The locking plate 25 is'pro- K vided with raised iianges which slide upon the flanges 8 of the intermediate plate 22.. Likewise, the locking plate 25 is provided with a raised. rear flange 25 which slides against the adjacent faceof the intermediate plate 22. As shown in Fig. 20 the spring 24 comprises two end portions which are integral with an intermediate vU-shaped p0rti on 19, this being the saine as the construction shown in Fig. 9. The upwardly bent hook like end 25` ofthe locking plate 25 is adapted to engage the intermediate portion 19 of the spring 24".r The hinge connection between the intermediate plate 22 and the bottom plate 1,` is provided by means of spaced sleeves 26y and 27, and a similar intermediate sleeve which. is located in the space between the end sections of the spring A24". These three bearing sleeves Vare integral with the` base plate 1. Hence, the intermediate bend 19 of the spring 24" permits a limited sliding movementot the locking plate 25 torrelease it from the postI 7. That is, the intermediate bend 19 prevents the locking plate 25 from being pulled out too far although it permits Vthe limited slid- .ing movement thereof. Thetop plate 28 is In order Yto release the locking llt) can be snapped into position vas shown in Fig. 17 as it is made of resilient metal. VIn order to conveniently turn the top plate 28 to its open Vpositiomitis provided with recesses 31 and 32. It is clear thatwhen the top plate 28 has been swung into the position shown in Fig. 19, that it can be pulledk forwardly until the locking plate 25 is pulled forwardly to an extent suiiicient to release the recess of the post 7, yfrom thestraight line edge or wall of the opening 26a. `When the device has been fully opened, the position of the parts is indicated by thei dotted lines in Fig. 19.
I have shown preferred embodiments of my invention, but it is clear that numerous changes and omissions could bey made without departing from its spirit.
