Description

J. P. ANDREW TRUNK LOCK Filed Feb. 20, 1926 Patented July 13, 1926.
UNITED STATES PATENT oFFic JOHN P. ANDREW, OF PELI-IAM, NEW YORK, ASSIGNOR TO THE YALE & TOEVNE MANU- FACTURING COMPANY, OF STAMFORD, CONNECTICUT.
TRUNK LOCK.
Application filed February 20, 1926.
This invention relates to improvements in trunk locks and more particularly to means for manipulating the hasp,one object of the invention belng to provide simple and efficient means cooperable with the hasp to draw the same down and effectually close and secure the lid of the trunk.
A further object is to so construct the device that the releasing of the hasp shall be facilitated.
Vith these and other objects in .view, the invention consists in certain novel. features of construction and combinations of parts as hereinafter set forth and pointed out in the claims.
In the accompanying drawings;
Figure 1 is a view in front elevation showing an embodiment of my invention;
Figure 2 is a side view partly in section, and
Figures 3, 4 and 5 are side views illustrating different positions of the parts.
lock casing is shown at 1 and adapted to be secured to the body of a trunk, a strike or keeper being shown at 2 and adapted to be secured to the lid or cover of the trunk. The strike or keeper is provided with an enlargement 3 to be engaged by a hasp 4 and said enlargement is provided with a shoulder 5, behind which the upper end portion of the hasp engages, as shown in Figs. 1 to 1. The enlargement 3 with its shoulder 5 thus forms, in elfect, a hook to receive the hasp.
The hasp 4 has a general inverted U-shape and normally embraces the enlargement 3 of the strike or keeper and a casing enlargement 6. At the lower ends of the parallel arms of the hasp, laterally or inwardly projecting toes 7 are provided to enter suitable holes in the lock casing 1, and said toes are provided with grooves or notches 8 in which the lower portion of a locking bolt 9 in the casing 1 engages, said bolt being operable by means of any suitable key actuated devices, as indicates at 10.
Pivotally attached at one end to the lower portion of the casing enlargement 6, is a finger lever 11, and this lever is pivotally connected intermediate of its ends with they lower portions of the arms of the hasp, pref- Serial No. 89,637.
shown in Fig. 4:, thus withdrawing the locking toes 7 from the lock casing as also indicated in Fig. 4. Further upward movement of the lever 11 will raise the hasp clear of the shoulder 5 on the strike or keeper, when the hasp can be entirely removed from the latter, as shown in Fig. 5, thus releasing the lid or cover of the trunk. In looking the trunk, the hasp will be made to engage the enlargement 3 on the strike or keeper behind the shoulder 5. Upon depressing the lever, the lid or cover of the trunk will be drawn down to its proper place to effectuallyclose the trunk and the downward and forward movement of the lever, will cause the locking toes of the shackle to enter the lock casing and become positioned to be engaged by the bolt 9.
Having fully described my invention what I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters-Patent, is
1; In atrunk lock, the combination with a lock casing, a bolt therein, means for operating said bolt, and a strike or keeper, of a hasp to engage the strike or keeper, a toggle lever connecting said hasp with the lock casing, and a locking member projecting from said hasp and adapted to enter the lock casing in position to be engaged by the bolt therein.
2. In a trunk lock, the combination of a lock casing, a locking bolt therein, a strikeor keeper including a hook-shaped portion, a hasp shaped to embrace portions of the lock casing and the strike or keeper and engage the hook-shaped portion of the latter, a toggle lever connecting said hasp with the lock casing, and means on said hasp to be enga ed by the bolt in the lock casing.
3. n a trunk lock, the combination with a lock casing, a locking bolt therein, and a strike or keeper, of a hasp having approxconnected with the hasp arms and the lock imately parallel arms connected at one end casing and effecting a toggle connection beby a cross member to engage the strike or tween the hasp and the lock casing. 10 keeper, locking members projecting from In testimony whereof, I have signed this the lower endsof the hasp arms and adapted specification.
to enter the lock casing and receive said locko ing' bolt and a manually operable member JOHN P. ANDREW.
