specji eat igitof Letters Patent. Patented lily .26, 1921 Application filed. December 16, 1920. Serial No. 431,064.
. and State of California, have invented cer-.
tain new and useful Improvements in Stoves, of which the following is; a specification.
This invention relates to stoves and'more' particularly to a cover plate for the fuel box. This cover plate contains; the usualholes and lids, and is provided with means by which one side may be raised, the other side serving as a hinge.
The principal object of my present inven-v tion is to so construct the said plate that it can be maintained in its openposition without the use of auxiliary holding devices. In general I aim to provide a QQVQIF- plate which is simple and inexpensive in construction, which is easily operated and which effectively holds a device of the above mentioned character in its open position.
With these and other objects in view as will appear more fully in the following specification, my invention consists in cer-v tain novel features of the construction and arrangement of parts herein described and more specifically pointed out in the appended claims.
Reference being had to the accompanying drawing forming part of this specification.
Figure 1 is a view in plan of one end of a stove showing the application of my invention thereto.
Fig. 2 is a view in plan of the top of the stove with the cover plate removed.
Fig. 3 is an enlarged view of one corner of the plate.
Fig. 4 is an enlarged view in section on the line 4-4, Fig. 1. I
Fig. 5 is an enlarged view in section on the line 5 5, Fig. 1.
Referring to corresponding parts in the several views by same numerals of reference, 1 denotes a stove top having the opening 2 which is practically as large as the firebox. This opening is closed by the plate 3which in turn may be provided with the opening 4 and the usual lids 5. The plate 3 restson a ledge 6 formed around the entire inside of the opening 2. The plate 3 is made of comparatively thin material and ha'sthe outer edge ribbed as shown at 7, this rib normally resting on the horizontal portion of the ledge 6.
In one corner of the plate is a rectangular notch from the side of which extends a sub stantially circular stud 9. the outer surface of which is tangentialto the rear and bot tom surfaces of the cover plate, as illustrated in Fig. 4. .The side wall 11 of ledge Gis provided with elongated hole 10, in the corner corresponding to thatof the cover plate on which the stud 9. is formed. This hole is adapted to receive the stud 9 and it will be noted that the latter extends laterally beyond the line of the side edge of the cover plate 3.
The ledge at the opposite corner of the opening is provided with a vertically extending lug 12, which lug is separated from the side of the ledge by a distance greater than the width of rib 7 and is positionedforwardof the rear portion of the opening,
a distance such that the rib may turn between the lug and the rear portion of the opening in the manner hereinafter described.
The stove top at the side of the opening 2 opposite the hole 10 and lug'12, is provided with a groove 14 and the cover plate 3 has formed thereon a tongue 15 which fits this groove, so that the surfaces of the tongue and the stove cover form a substantially level surface. A suitable handle 16 is connected tov the downwardly turned portion of the tongue 15, this handle enabling the cover to be raised and otherwise manipulated without danger of burning the hand.
The operation of the cover plate is as follows: When positioned as shown in Fig. 1, and it is desired to place matter in the opening 2, the cover plate may be raised by means of the handle 16. After the plate has been raised a sufficient distance, it is given a slight endwise movement toward the edge containing the lug 9. This causes the lug to slip farther through the hole 10 and the edge 18 of recess 8 to overlap the upper surface of top 1. On the opposite side of the cover plate, the rib 7 on the under side thereof is moved in alinement with lug 12. Therefore when the handle 17 is released, the plate is supported by the shoulder 18 resting on the surface of top 1 and the rib 7 resting on lug 12. This gives a full width of fire box opening without any supported rods or braces for holding the covered plate in its raised position. Such braces are always undesirabla'due to the fact that they are liable to be knocked out of position when placing material. in the fire box. I
The cover is not raised to suiticient'angle to cause the lids 5 to slide out of the opening 4 and it will be noted that the entire structure can be constructed and assembled without employing any machine work thereon.
While I have shown the preferred embodiment of my invention it will be understood that changes may be made within the scope of the claims without departing-from the spirit of the invention or sacrificing any of the advantages thereof.
Having thus described my invention, I claim as new and wish to cover by Letters Patent:
1. A closure comprising the combination of a flat member having a rectangular 0pening therein, a ledge formed around said opening, a plate forming a closure for said opening, and adapted to rest on said ledge, said ledge having a laterally extending opening in the side wall thereof, a stud on said plate adapted to enter said opening, and a shoulder on said plate adapted to engage said member when saidplate is removed lat-' erally.
2. closure comprising a fiat member having an openingtherein, a plate adapted to fit said opening, a ledge around said opening for supporting said plate, means for pivotally'holding' one edge of said plate,
and permitting a lateral movement thereof when opened, and a shoulder formed on said plate for engaging said flat member when said late is moved laterally.
3. A device of the character described comprising a member having an opening therein, a closure for said opening, means for pivotally mounting said. closure in said opening to permit a lateral movement when said closure is opened, and means extending over said member when said closure is moved laterally, said last mentioned means contacting with the surface of said member to holdsaid closure in its open position.
4:. A device of the character described com prising a member having an opening there in, a closure therefor, said opening having a laterally extending hole at one side thereof, a stud on said closure for cooperation with said hole and movable laterally therein when said closure is open and means carried by said closure for engaging said member when said closure is moved laterally.
In testimony whereof I aHiX my signature.
