NCASED SHIPPING-CAN FOR OIL AND OTHER FLUID.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented June 3, 1913.
Applicationylbd February 14, 1910. Serial No. 543,650.
To all 'whom i may concern:
lie it known that l, Armeno H. BUCKLEY, ilv citizen el the United States, residing in Ualr Lane, Philadelphia, in the county ot Philadelphia and State ot Pennsylvania, have invented n new and useful lnlprovement in lncased AShippingCans for (lil and other Fluids, of which the following is a specification. V
My invention relates to -ineased lShipping cans for oil :.nd'other fluids. y
The object\o;f
my invention is lo provide;
an improved construction oi' inc-ased shipy ping can suitable for shipment of oils and other fluids having a low lash test, which will be composed of `few parts, be capable of being cheaply manulactured, and in which the pouring nozzle, as well as the can itself, will be entirely and completely in closed .and protected, in which the can will be firmly, securely and immovably held in position in the cese' when the lid of the case is closed, fin which the can may be freely removable from the case when the lid is open, and from which the oil or other fluid may be conveniently poured.
My invention consists in the novel construction of parts and devices and in the novel eombinations of parts und devices herein shown and described, and by which this object or resultis practically accomu plished, the seine being more particularly set forth in the claims.
ln the accompanying drawing forminga part ot this specification, Figure 1 is a perspective view of an oil cen and case embodying my invention, showing the lidl partially open. Figs. 2 and 3 are vertical cross sections on lines 2 2 and BH3 respectively, showing the lid closed. i a f ln the drawing, 1 represents an oilfor other fluid shipping can, having a tapering top or breast and pouring nozzle f3, and
provided with bail ears 1, Wire bail 5 and handle (i, the can being preferably of a rectangular shape in horizontal cross section.
is the case oi'box-like or rectangular shape, ot e adopted to receive the recoingi" ir can 1. lhe ease 'Z' has a shortened trent Si, extending preferably to about the .ghi ot the lower edgeot the tapering top 9 of the can. The sides 9 and back 10 of the case project slightly above the upper end et the can nozzle 3. The shortened front 8 olf cese affords e seat 11 tor the deep curtain 12 at the front of the hinged lid 13 of the case. The hinged lid 13 is provided with a pair of deep can holding cleats 14, which tit inside the upright sides ot the case, and engage, when the lid is closed, at their lower edges 15 the tapering to 2 of the can, so that these cleats on'the lid will themselves serve as a device for holding the can iirmly, snugly and immovably in position in the case. The lid 13 is nailed to these cleats 15, as is also the curtain 12 of the lid, thus giving the lid a lirm and strong construction. The lid is hinged at its back edge to the back 10 of the case by hinges 16. The lid is held lirmly iii/its closed position on the case preferably by means of a hinged hasp 17 secured by a strap 18 to the curtain 12 of the lid 13, coperating with a bent pivot-al fastener 19, which is pivotally secured to the front 8 of' the case by a strep or plate 20. l
When the lid is closed and locked in its closed position 'by the hasp and fastener, thedeep depending cleats on the lid by their engagement with the tapering breast of the can firmly hold and lock the can firmly in the case. Vhen the lid isopen, its hinges permit. it to swing back fiat against the upright back of the case, 'and the can 1 is entrely free to be lifted out o the case by its handle and tilted'down over the upper edge 21 ot the shortened front 8 of the case as a itulcrum for conveniently `pouring' the liquid from the can. The upright sides 9 or the case serve as guides `for the can when the can is being tilted over the upper edge of the case front as a fulcrum, in pouring,as4
will be readily understood Atrom the dotted lines in Fig. 3 of the drawing.l
l claimz 1. An article of manufacture of the cherecter described comprising, in combination: a sheet metal can having a5 tapered top and a pouring nozzle; and a case provided Wit-h a hinged lid and entirely inclosing'the can and its nozzle, said lid being free from engagement:- vvith the nozzle When closed and having a rigid member xedly secured thereto which is adapted to engage the tapered top of the can at a point near the junction of said top with. the body portion to thereby coming in Contact With the lid when the can j is inverted, substantially as speciied,
5 tirely inclosing the can and its nozzle, the
lid being free Pfrom engagement with the nozle when in closed position, said lidl be ing provided with a pair of parallel depending cleats -tting inside the case -on opposite 10 sides of the can nozzle and engaging the tapered top of the can at points edjaoent the junction ofthe top With the body por tion to thereby hold the can firmly in po ,sition Without danger of movement when the l5 lid is closedand preventing the nozzle from ooming in Contact Withthe lid When the can 1 s invertedb the can being freely removable from the ease when the lid is in open position,y substantially as speitied. 2O 3. An article o the character desoribtd comprising, in combination: a sheet metal een having atop and pouring nozzle; and a ease having il hinged lid and entirel inclosing the can and its nozzle, said lid being free .from engagement with the nozzle when f in closed position and having secured thereto rigid depending cleats fitting inside the onse and en u ing the top of the canon opposite sides o' tie nozzle to hold the .een firmly in position within the ease when the lid is closed to thereby prevent the nozzle from coming in; Contact with the' lid when the can is in verted, said cleats being movable with the lid to thereby permit the can to be readily removed from the case when the lid is in opened poeition, substantially as saecied.
