Specification of Letters Patent.
Application filed June 11, 1913. Serial No. 773,019.
To all whom it may concern Be it known that we, JOHN P. NIOODEMUS and LOUIS E. ECKLEY, citizens of the United States, residing at Logansport, in Cass and State of Indiana, have invented new and useful Improvements in Govere'd Rece tacles, of which the following is a specilibation.
The present invention relates to receptacles, which though useful for many purposes, is perhaps especially desirable for garbage cans, and the like. One of the primary objects of the invention is toprovide novel, simple and effective means, whereby the cover can be eflectively {secured in position against accidental opening, as for example, when the receptacle is overturned. Thus the contents will not be exposed or discharged, as for instance, by anjanimal upsetting the receptacle.
A further and important object is to provide a structure, in which the cover will always properly position or seat itself upon the receptacle when placed thereupon, and the handle for such receptacle will be maintained in an upright position, so that the said receptacle can be easily transported.
An embodiment of the invention is illustrated in the accompanying drawings, wherein Figure d is a side elevation of the same. Fig. 2 is a vertical sectional view of the same at right angles to Fig. 1. Fig. 3 is a top plan viei Fig. 4 is a side elevation with the cover removed.
Similar reference numerals designate corresponding parts in all the figures'of the drawings.
The receptacle is designated generally by the reference numeral 5, and may be of any desired form and any appropriate material. Secured to 6, to which are pivoted, by bolts 7 or other suitable devices, the side arms 8 of a handle bail 9. These side arms 8 are located in substantially parallel relation with respect to each other.
A flanged cover 9 is arranged to fit over the open top of the receptacle 5, and secured to this top preferably upon its upper side,
"is a hand grip 10 having depending side portions 11 that terminate inhorizontal extensions 12, which are riveted or otherwise secured, as illustrated at 13 to the cover. The terminal portions of the extensions 12 are provided with openings 14 that slidably reopposite sides thereof, are ears ceive the side arms 8 of the bail. It will thus means of the hand grip, the
be seen that by cover is slidably mounted on said bail, and while it can be raised and swung to one side of the open end of the receptacle, as illustrated in Fig. 4, nevertheless it is always connected to said receptacle, and is therefore not in danger of being lost or misplaced.
The hand grip structure, ing guiding means for the cover, also forms a support for cover-locking means. Thus in the present embodiment, oppositely disposed bolts 15 are slidably mounted in the side portions 11 of the grip 10, and in upstandin cars 16 carried by the extensions thereo The outer ends of these bolts are arranged to enter openings 17 formed in the side arms 8 of the bail 9. Their inner ends are connected to hell cranks 18 pivotally mounted at 19 on the inner side of the grip 10 and having hand grasping terminals 20 arranged below the hand-engaging portion of said grip. Springs 21, surrounding the bolts,
bear against the side portions 11 of the grip, and against cross pins 22 carried by the bolts, the said springs thus urging the bolts outwardly or into their operative locking positions.
It is believed that the operation will be clear from an understanding of the structure. When the handle bail 9 is in its upright position and the cover 9 is upon the receptacle 5, the ends of the bolts 15 will be enga ed in the openings 17, the cover will thus Tue looked upon the receptacle, and the bail will be locked by the same means in its upright position. If therefore the receptacle be overturned, .its contents will not be discharged, and the receptacle can be carried conveniently with the cover in its locked position. To open the receptacle, 1t is only necessary for the operator to grasp the grip 10 and the hand grasping portions 20 of the bell crank. This will cause the movement of the latter, and the first action will be to withdraw the bolts from their interlocking engagements with the side arms '8 of the bail, whereupon the cover can be easily lifted, and if desired, swung to one side or the receptacle turned for the purpose of emptying it.
From the foregoing, it is thought that the construction, operation and many advantages of the herein described invention will be apparent to those skilled in the art, without further description, and it Wlll be understood that various changes in the size,
shape, proportion and minor details of construction may be resorted to without departing from the spirit or sacrificing any of the advantages of the invention.
Having thus fully described our invention, what we claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is i 1. The combination with a receptacle, of a handle bail pivoted thereto, a removable cover for the receptacle, and a reciprocatin bolt slidably mounted on the cover an slidable into and out of interlocking engagement with the handle bail, said bolt when so interlocked holding both the cover on the receptacle and the bail against its swinging movement.
2. The combination with a receptacle, of a handle bail pivoted thereto, a removable cover'for the receptacle, a hand grip mounted on the cover,-a bolt slidably mounted on the cover and grip and detachably interlocking with the handle bail, said bolt when so interlocked, constituting common means for holding the cover on the receptacle and preventing the swinging movement of the bail, and an actuatingdevice for the bolt arranged within the hand grip in a position to be grasped by. a hand engaging said grip.
3. The combination with a receptacle, of
a handle bail pivoted thereto, a cover for the receptacle, a hand grip mounted on the cover and having integra projectin terminal portions slidably engaging the ail, and a reciprocatory locking device movably mounted on the hand grip and detachably interlocking with the handle bail at one side thereof to secure the cover in place on the receptacle and also hold the handle bail against swinging movement.
4. The combination with a receptacle of a handle bail having side arms pivoted to opposite portions thereof, a removable cover for the receptacle, a hand gri secured on the cover and having exten ed portions slidably engaging the bail, .oppositely rojecting locldng bolts slidably mounte on the hand grip and detachably interlocking with the bail to hold the cover upon the receptacle, and operating devices connected to the bolts and arranged within the hand grip.
In testimony whereof We have hereunto set our hands in presence of two subscribing witnesses.
