SAFETY-LOCK FAUCET.
Application filed October 1, 1923.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that we, GEORGE W. DERMAN and Josnrrr A. Monicrcm, residing at Sacramento, county of Sacramento, State of California, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Safety-Lock Faucets; and we do declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and to the characters of reference marked thereon, which form a part of this application.
This invention relates to improvements in faucets of the well-known molasses gate type, which are extensively used in connection with the dispensing and sale of lubricating oils in service stations and the like.
The oil containers are commonly set close to the floor or ground, so that the faucets,
being at the bottom of the containers, are quite low down.
\Vith use, the faucets of course become catch or lock so arranged that its release only had with a movement in a direction opposite to the direction of opening movement of the faucet.
In other words, to open the faucet, pressure in the necessary direction to do so must be combined with a simultaneous pressure in the opposite direction on the catch.
At the same time, the catch release trigger orhandle is so aaanged relative to the faucet handle that the faucet may be opened in the usual manner and with no more effort than is at present necessary in doing so.
A further object of the invention is to produce a simple and inexpensive device and yet one which will be exceedingly effective for the purposes for which it is designed.
These objects we accomplish by means of Serial No. 665,886.

Fig. l is a side elevation of a faucet of the molassesgate type, showing our improved safety lock mounted thereon.
Fig. 2 is a sectional elevation of the same.
Referring now more particularly to the characters of reference on the drawings, the numeral 1 denotes the body of the faucet, of standard design, threaded on one end as at 2 for connection to a source of supply, and having a convexly curved face 3 on its other end, the bore f of the body terminah ing adjacent the lower end of this face.
Slidable over this face, of smaller dimeir sions than the same, but larger than the mouth of the bore and adapted to cover or uncover the same, is a gate 5 pressed against said face by a spring 6 mounted in a cup 7 formed in a casing or shell 8 which normally covers the entire area of the face in spaced relation thereto and is mounted on the body by means of arms 9 extending to pivotal pins 10 fixed on the body, these pins being axially located with respect to the curvature of the face A handle 11 is formed with the shell and projects outwardly thereof in central longitudinal alinc ment with the body.
F or case and economy of mamifacture, the handle member is made in two symmetrical and equal sized parts, each hollowed out, and secured together by screws or bolts 12.
The foregoing construction and ar "angement ofparts are standard, and of themselves form no part of our invention, which comprises a pawl 13 pivoted on the upper one of the bolts 12 and located in the hollow area between the two parts of the gate-ens ing 8, as above described. The free end of this pawl is adapted to seat in a transverse notch 14 provided in the body-face 3 just above the gate 5 when the latter is in its closed position. Formed with said pawl is a handle member 15 projecting up through a recess 16 in the handle 11, and then overhanging said handle 11 substantially parallel. thereto, and normally spaced therefrom. Thepawl and handle unit is substantially in the form ofa bell crank, and so arranged that to withdraw the pawl from its notches the handle member 15 thereof must be depressed or moved toward the faucet-opening handle 11.
Since to open the faucet the handle 11 must be raised and to enable itto be so raised the pawlhandlelo must move-down,
, it will be evident that a movement of either handlevalone wiilnot suffice to open the faucet, but both handles must be moved in their proper directions simultaneously.
It "will thus be seen that it is impossible to accidentally open the faucet by upwardly directedpressure on the handle 11 alone, .or
by vdownwardly di ected pressure. onthe pawl handle alone.
At the same time/it is no harder to-open the faucet with our lock structurethan-without-, since the handle ll is usually grasped bythe hand with the-thumb on top, and 1h requires of" course no more effort to place the thumb on top of the handle 15. Then with a downward pressure of the thumb, and-air-upward pressure of the hand as a whole.a very naturalmovement or operation-the,pawl willbe released and the gate 5,per-mi-tted to move from over the mouth of the faucet-opening.

Whilethis specification-sets forth in detail the present andpreferred construction of the device, .still in practice such deviations from such detail maybe resorted to as do not form a departure from the spirit of the invention, as defined by the appended claims.
Havingthus described our invention what we claim as new and. useful and desire to secure by Letters Patent is:
1. In combination with a faucet having a body provided with an outlet in one face thereof, gateslidable over said face to cover or uncover the outlet, and ahollow handle member in whichthe gate is mounted normally enveloping the outlet-face of the body, a catch member mounted in the handle above the gate and engaging the body-face when the gate is closed, and a releasing memher for said catch member extending through and above the handle and depressible theretoward to release the catch, the gate being opened by a movement of the handle in an upward direction.
2. lncombination with a faucet having a body provided with an outlet in one face thereof, a gate slidable over said face to cover or uncover the outlet, and a catch means mounted 'in connection with the sliding gate and normally preventing opening movement thereof, said catch being releasableionly by pressure exerted in a direction directly opposite tothat necessary to open the gate.
3. in combination with a faucet having a body provided withv an outlet in one face thereof, agate shdable over said iace to cover or uncover the outlet; a catchmember engageable with the body when the gateis' positioned adjacent the gatehandleand in the path of opening movement thereof, said catch handle being movable to release the catch only in a direction directly opposite tothat of the opening'movement of the faucet handle.
