VALVE Loox;
Application led September 10,1927. Serial No 218,826.
My present invention has for itsobject to provide a simple and highly efficient valve lock intended for general use, but especially adapted for locking the valve in a gas range or stove to prevent the same from being accidentally opened and especially to prevent a child from opening Such a valve.
To the above end, generally stated, the in- 'vention consists of the novel devices and comle binations of-devices hereinafter described and defined in the claim.
In the accompanying drawings, Which illustrate the invention, like characters indicate like parts throughout the several views.k
Referring to the drawings:
Fig. 1 is a perspective vieu7 of the improved valve lock;
Fig. 2 is a plan vieW showing the valve lock applied to a valve of the type commonly vused :in on a gas range or stove;
Fig. 3 is a View partly in elevation and partly in section taken .on the irregular line 3-3 of Fig. 2; and
Fig. 4 is a fragmentary view partly in elevation and partly in section taken on the line 4`4 of Fig. 2.
The numeral 5 indicates a plug valve of the type commonly used in gas ranges and stoves and the numeral 6 indicates the casing thereof. This casing 6 is interposed in a gas feed pipe 7 and attached thereto by having on its sides a pair of diametrically opposite nipples 8 screwed into the sections of said pipe.
Secured to the valve 5 is a radial pin 9 which extends into a notch of the casing 6 for engagement With aV stop shoulder 11 at one end of said notch to limit the closing movement of the valve 5, and a stop shoulder 12 at the other end of said notch. to limit the opening movement of the valve 5.
The improved lock includes a box-like body 13 having an open end and a pair of loop-like attaching straps 14, the ends of which are adjustably attached by nut-equipped screws v15 to the bodies thereof. These straps 14 are adapted to be applied around the nipples 8, as best shown in Figs. 2 and 3, for rigidly but detachably connecting the body 13 to the casing 6.
A thumb piece 16 is loosely fitted in the body 13 and attached thereto by a horizontal pivot pin 17 at the open end of the body 13.
On the pivoted end of t-he thumb piece 16 is a lock lug 18, the back of Which forms a cam 10 in the upper end surface 19. .Formed with the upperend of the lock lug' 18 is a lateral extension 20. A coil Spring 21 is compressed between the bottom of the body 13 and the thumb piece 16. This spring 21 yieldingly lioldsthe thumb piece 16 raised with the lock lug 18 extending into the path of movement of theV pin 17 and with the extension 20 Y the stop shoulder 12 as an abutment. When the valve 5 is closed, its pin 9 projects between the stop shoulder 11 and the lock lug 18, as best shown vin F ig.2, and thereby securely holds the valve 5 closed so that it cannot be turned in either' direction. An attempt to open the valve 5 Will cause its pin 9 to engage the lock lug 18 which is securely held by the shoulder v12 to resist such pressure.
To release thelock so that the valve 5 may be opened the operator places his forefinger under the body thumb piecev16 and applies suicieiit pressurev to move the thumb piece 16 into the body 13 -againstthe tension of the spring 21 and thereby retract the lock lug` 18 from the path of movement of the pin 9 to permit the valve 5 to be opened. Afterthe valve is opened and the thumb piece l'releas'ed, the spring 21 Will lift the thumb again position the lock lug 18 in the lpath of movement of the pin 9. When the valve5 is open, its pin 9 extends under as best shown in Fig. 4. I
During the closing movement of the valve 5 its pin 9 engages the cam surface 19V and thereby moves the lock lug 18 against the tension of the spring 21 out of its path of movement. As soon as the pin 9 has passed the cam surface 19 the spring 21 Will immediately return the thumb piece 16 and the parts carried thereby to normal postion and automatically lock the valve closed.
The above ,described lock may be very quickly applied to a valve casing and it is evident that it Will securely hold a valve from being accidentally opened or from being opened by a child. The body 13 securely protects the thumb piece 16 against accidental movement.
What I claim is; f
A lock of the kind described comprising a boXlike body having an open top and an open end, said body having at its open end attaching means for Securingthe same to the casing of a valve provided with a stop pin the extension 20,
positioned to engagev 13 With his thumb on the,V
piece 16 and v workin "between a air .of stop shoulders valveclosed, said lock lnghaving a lateral on sai casing, said ody having a hinged extension arranged to yieldingly rest on the cover affording a 1everacting thumb plece, pin when the valve is open to permit said 10 said cover having a locking, and a sprmg valve to be set in diierent open positions. I comiressed between the cover and body In testimonvwhereof I aix my signature.
yiel ingly holding the cover with the lock lug Y 1n the path of movement of the pin to lock the JOSEPH WASELAK.
