The general object of the invention is to provide a latch for holding the cock in closed position so that it cannot be accidentally opened or opened by a child, the

invention being mainly designed for cocks on gas stoves and the like.

Another object of the invention is to so form the latching device that it can be ap plied, by unskilled persons, to the existing models of cocks by simply removing the handle from the cock and placing the supporting bracket of the device thereon.

A further object of the invention is to so arrange the device on the cock that it can be easily manipulated by one finger or the thumb of the hand which is grasping the handle of the cock.

This invention also consists in certain other features of construction and in the combination and arrangement of the several parts, to be hereinafter fully described, illustrated in the accompanying drawings and specifically pointed out in the appended claims.

In describing my invention in detail, reference will be had to the accompanying drawings wherein like characters denote like or corresponding parts throughout the several views, and in which V V Figure 1 is a perspective view of the cock, with the attachment thereon.

Figure 2 is an elevation of the cock, with the handle in section.

Figure 3 is a section substantially on line 3-3 of Figure 2.

Figure 4c shows the various parts of the cock and the device separated.

In these views, 1 indicates the body of the cock, 2 the plug thereof and 3 the handle which is attached to the top part of the plug by the screw l. The body is provided with a notch 5, the vertical walls of which are engaged by a pin 6 carried by the plug to limit the movement of the plug from an open to a closed position and vice versa. This construction is of the well known type of gas cocks.

In carrying out my invention, I provide a bracket 7 which is formed with a tapered eye 8 to receive the small inner end of the handle 3 and said bracket is provided with the Wings for engaging the stem 10 of the plug 2. Thus the bracket can be attached B5 to the cock by removing the handle 3 and placing it through the eye 8 and than placing the handle, the wings 9 engaging the stem 10, as shown in Figure 3. An angle shaped latch bar 11 is slidably carried by the bracket by having a square part pass ing through a hole in said bracket. The

extremity of'the bar is bent downwardly at lines in Figure 3, so that the plug is free to be turned by the handle 3. When pressure is removed from the handle, the spring will cause the parts to return to their normal position, and as soon as the plug is turned back to its closed position, the end of thelatch bar will again engage the notch and thus prevent the plug from again being turned to open position until the latch bar is again manipulated to free it from the notch. A curved car 14 is formed on one of the wings'9 to act as a guide for the latch bar in the movement of the same.

From the foregoing, it will be seen that the cock cannot be opened until the latch member is projected to unlatching position so that there is no danger of the cock being accidentally opened or opened by a child. The device is so arranged that it can be manipulated by a finger or thumb of the hand grasping the handle 3, and being arranged under the handle, close to the stem of the plug, it is out of the way and does not detract from the appearance of the plug.

It is thought from the foregoing description that the advantages and novel features of my invention will be readily apparent.

I desire it to be understood that I may make changes in the construction and in the combination and arrangement of the several. parts, provided that such changes fall with in the scope of the appended claims.

What I claim is 1. In combination with a cock having a. notch and a handle, a bracket engaging the handleand having a depending portion and a spring pressed latch member below the handle and slidably mounted in the depending portion and having a part to engage the notch in the body;
