MANHOLE COVER.
Application. filed .Tune 8,
To all whom t may concern.'
Be it known that I, CLoYD E. LEECH, a citizen 4of the United States, residing at Lima, in the county of Allen and State of Ohio, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in a Manhole Cover, of which the following is a. specification.
The present invention relates to a manhole cover and has for its principal object to provide means for looking the cover securely in its casing and also to raise the cover as the locking means are released.
Another object of the invention is to provide a device of this nature which will be extremely simple and efficient in construction, reliable in operation, comparatively inexpensive to manufacture, and well adapted to the purpose for which it is designed.
With the above and numerous other objects in view as will appear as the description progresses, the invention, resides in certain novel features of construction and the combination and arrangement of parts as will be hereinafter more fully, described and claimed.
In the drawings Figiire l is a top plan of a manhole cover and casing embodying my invention,
Figure 2 is a section taken substantially on the line 2 2 of Figure l,
Figure 3 is a bottom plan of the manhole cover,
Figure 4 is a detailed section through the locking mechanism,
Figure 5 is a section taken 1on the line 5-5 of Figure 4 looking in the direction of the arrow,
Figure 6 is a detailed section taken substantially on the line 6-6 of Figure 5 look- .ing in the direction of the arrow.
Figure 7 is a detailed section taken'substantially on the line 7 7 of Figure 4 looking in the direction of the arrow,
Figure 8 is a detailed section through the locking mechanism showing the key inserted therein,
Figure 9 is a perspective of the locking bolt,
Figure 10 is a perspective of the key, and
Figure 11 is an end elevation thereof.
Referring to the drawings in detail it will be seen that the manhole casing 1 is provided with the usual collar 2 provided with an annular internal liange 3 and an interna-l 1922. Serial No. 566,818.
inclined iiange 4 situated therebeneath and curved inwardly so as to provide the extension 5. Diametrically opposed to the inclined flange 4 the annular 3 is provided with an aperture 6.
The manhole coverl 7 is provided upon its under surface adjacent its periphery with a curved finger 9 adapted to be received within the aperture 6. At a diametrically opposite point on the under surface of the manhole cover 7 there is situated a depending collar 10 having oppositely disposed semi-annular slots 11 and 12 disposed in registry with each other and opposite to each other. The bolt 13 is provided with a oircular body portion adapted to fit within the collar 10 and having the locking finger 14 extending through the slot 12 and the angular retaining finger 15 extending through the slot 11. The locking finger 14 is adapted to be disposed between the annular flange 3 and the inclined flange 4. A non-circular opening 16 is provided in the body of the bolt 13 so that the non-circular extension 17 of the key 18 may be engaged therewith for turning the bolt. This key 18 is adapted to extend through the key hole 19 of the manhole cover 7.
By referring particularly to Figure 5 it will be noted that when the manhole 7 is in a closed position the key 18 may be inserted through the lkey hole 19 so that the extension 17 engages the opening 16. Then by turning the key so that the bolt rotates in a counter-clockwise direction the locking finger 14 engages the inclined fiange 4 there- -by lifting the manhole cover 7 partially from its casing 1. When the bolt is fully rotated in this direction the looking finger 14 will be out of engagement with the annular ange 3 so that the cover may readily be removed by a person placing his hand under the open end thereof or by use of some implement if desired.
It is thought that the construction and operation of the device will now readily be understood without a more detailed description. It is, however, desired to point out that numerous changes in form, proportion, and in the minor details of construction and in the combination and arrangement of' parts may be resorted to witho-ut departing from the scope of the invention as hereinafter claimed.
Having thus described my invention what I claim as new is In combination, a manhole casing, a flange extending inwardly and inclined upwardly 5 of said easing, a manhole cover for said oasing, a collar extending from the under face of said @over adjacent one end having a slot formed therein, a bolt having an opening therein rotatably mounted on said Collar and 10 having one of its ends extending through said slot to engage said inclined flange and means cooperating with the opening of said bolt to rotate said holt and adapted to raise Said cover.
In testimony whereof I afIiX my signature 15 in presence of two Witnesses.
