UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE...
ELI WADE CRANFORD, 0F ALBEMARLE, N ORTH CAROLINA.
COMBINED WINDOW CURTAIN AND SHADE HANGER.
Application filed March 14, 1919.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, ELI WADE CRANFORD, a citizen of the United States, residing at Albemarle, in the county of Stanly and State of North Carolina, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Combined Window Curtain and Shade Hangers, of which the following is a specification.
This invention is an adjustable combination window curtain and shade hanger and has for its principal object the production of a simplified device of this nature which is strong and consists of a minimum number of parts thus minimizing the possibility of the same becoming inoperative or broken when in use.
Another object of this invention is the production of a device wherein a supporting frame is formed from a single strand of wire and has a bar thereon to slidably support the shade roller, while a cuff is mounted upon the frame to hold the frame from spreading, this cuff also performing the function of holding the pole of the window curtain in a desired position.
One practical form of construction and assembly of the present invention will be hereinafter described and is illustrated in the drawings, in which Figure 1 is a detail perspective view of the adjustable combination window curtain and shade hanger.
Fig. 2 is a horizontal section through the device taken on the line 2-2 of Fig. 1, looking in the direction of the arrow.
Fig. 3 is a vertical section through the lower portion of the frame, the shade roller support being shown in elevation.
In the preferred embodiment of the present invention about to be described, the frame, designated in general at 5 is formed from a single strand of wire. This frame comprises a horizontal base 6 having vertically extending sides 7, the sides 7 being formed at the ends of the base 6 and projecting parallel to each other. The sides 7' terminate in inwardly converging arms 8, the arms extending upwardly to terminate in the parallel portions 9. The diverging fingers 10 project upwardly beyond the parallel portions 9 and terminate in the horizontally extending extensions 11 having eyes 12 formed on the ends thereof. Therefore the frame may be positioned upon a window casing to allow the extensions 11 to rest upon the upper end of the casing and Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Mar. 2, 1920.
Serial No. 282,715.
securing elements 13 may be passed through the eyes 12 to be carried by the casing 14, thus fixing the frame upon the window casing although allowing the same to depend adjacent the front face of the casing 14, as shown in Fig. 1.
A horizontal bar 15 has eyes 16 at its end, the eyes 16 being carried upon the parallel sides 7 of the base 6 it being noted that the bar 15 is parallel to the base 6 as is shown in Fig. 1. A shade roller support 17 has a body 18 formed on its inner end, the ends of the body 18 being coiled to form sleeves 19. The sleeves 19 fit upon the base 6 of the frame 5 and upon the horizontal bar 15 whereby the shade roller support 17 may be moved in a horizontal plane by the movement of the sleeves 19 along the base 6 and the horizontal bar 15 in either of two directions.
A substantially triangular cuff 20 is formed from a strip of material and fits about the parallel portion 9 joining the arms 8 and fingers 10 thus holding the frame from spreading at this point. The curtain pole support 21 has a vertical finger 22 extending through the cufi' 20 it being noted that cuff 20 is crimped inwardly as at 20 adjacent the vertical finger 22 of the curtain pole support 21, whereby this cuff will bind upon the finger to hold the curtain pole support in a vertically adjusted position. Of course, the finger 22 may be moved upwardly or downwardly to vertically adjust the support 21, but the binding action upon the finger 22 is sufficient to hold the same in an adjusted position. to prevent the support 21 from accidentally moving downwardly when supporting a curtain pole.
It will therefore be seen that a very efficient supporting frame has been provided for the shade roller and the curtain pole support, although the frame is formed from. a single strand of wire and for this reason. can be produced at a minimum expense and while the wire may be of sufficient strength to firmly retain its strength when in use.
The provision of the bar in conjunction with the base of a frame provides a support for the shade roller support while the cuff holds the frame from spreading and also firmly supports the curtain pole support.
The foregoing description and accompanying drawings have reference to what might be considered to be the approved or preferred form of my invention. 'I desire it to be understood that I may make such changes in the construction, combination and arrangement of parts, materials dimensions, et cetera, as may prove expedient and fall Within the scope of the appended claim.
Havin thus fullyvdescribed my invention what I c aim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
Asa new article of manufacture, a combined window curtain and shade hanger consisting of a frame formed from a strand of wire and comprising a horizontal base, parallel vertically extending sides projecting from the ends of said base, converging arms extending from the upper ends 'of said sides, said arms terminating in parallel portions at their upper ends, diverging fingers eX- tcnding from the upper ends of said parallel portions, thus causing the frame to be re stricted in size intermediate its upper and lower portions, horizontally extending portions extending inwardly from the upper ends of said fingers and having retaining means thereon, a horizontal bar positioned above and parallel to said base, said horizontal bar having eyes at its ends, embracing the parallel sides adjacent the upper ends thereof and contiguous to the lower ends of said converging arms, a cufi clamped about the parallel portions at the upper portions of said arms and the lower portions of said fingers, thus causing the frame to be held from spreading while the extension of the arms and fingers will hold the cuff against shifting, horizontally adjustable supporting means mounted on said base, and a vertically adjustable supporting means carried by said cuff, as and for the purposes set forth.
In testimony whereof I my signature in presence of two witnesses.
ELI WADE CRANFORD.
