To all whom it may concern:

j Beit known that I, CHARLES KIRKBRIDE, a citizen of the United States, residing at Glouster, county o f Athens, and State of Ohio, have inventedcertain new Vand useful Improvements in Adjustable Curtain-Pole Brackets, of which the following is a specification.

VMy invention relates to curtain poles, and particularly to curtain pole adjusting devices.

The object of my invention is to provide a curtain pole with means for adjustably supporting the same whereby the curtain pole may be adjusted to any desired height or may be lowered forthe purpose of removing the curtain, and again raised into position for use by a person standing upon the floor.

A further object of my invention is to provide a simple and inexpensive device by means of which a curtain may be readily attached to a curtain pole without the use of the usual pins or a headin to receive the pole, and as readily detache therefrom.

Other objects will appear hereinafter.

lith these objects in view my invention consists generally in a curtain pole in combination with a pair of U-shaped bracket members adapted to be secured in position on a window frame and flexible members passing through said U-shaped members and having one end of each secured to the curtain pole. The curtain pole is provided with means for detachably securing the curtain or curtains thereto and in such case the exible members are preferably secured to said means. The curtain attaching means comprise wire clamps arranged longitudinally of the pole and upon the upper face thereof and the outer ends of the U-shaped members are preferably provided with notches or recesses to receive the adjacent portions of said members when the pole is raised into position to assist in firmly holding the pole against movement. The U- shaped members are preferably tubular and the flexible members are provided with loops or eyes of greater diameter than the bore of said tubular members for a purpose hereinafter described, and suitable means are provided for engaging said eyes to hold the curtain pole in the desired position.

My invention further consists in various details of construction and arrangements of parts all as will be fully described hereinafter and claims. f.

In carrying out my invention the tubular members hereinbefore mentioned may be attached either directly to the window frame or to a horizontal strip, which in turn is secured to or above the frame.

Referring now to the drawings, 1 indicates a strip, preferably of wood and adapted to be attached to the window casing or frame, and to this end it is provided with the perforated ears 2 to receive the screwsV or nails by which it is secured-in position. Near each end of the strip 1 is a member 3 through which is run a flexible member 4t. The member 3 is an inverted U-shaped tubular member comprising the upper curved portion 5 and the depending vertical arms 6 and 7. rlhe rear arm 6 which is adapted to be at.- tached to the strip 1 is preferably longer than the arm 7, and is provided with the apertures 8 and'9, adapted to receive headed members 10 and 11 respectively which project from the strip 1 or the window frame A as the case may be. The aperture 8 is of sufficient size to permit free passage of the head of the member 10 and is provided with an upwardly extending narrow extension or slot 12. The longer extremity of the arm 6 is cut at an angle as at 13, directly in front of the opening 9 to give access thereto. By this construction the member 3 is easily and particularly pointed. out in the quickly attached to the strip l, or directly to the window casing as preferred. The lower extremity of the forwardly extending or shorter arm 7, contains two oppositely7 positioned notches 14 forming a transverse recess to receive the curtain holding device 15, to be hereinafter described, when the curtain pole 1G is in its aised position.

The curtain holding device comprises a metallic rod 15 having an eye 17 formed at one end thereof. By means of a screw 18 the rod 15 is pivoted near one extremity of the curtain pole 1G, upon the top thereof. Intermediate the ends of said rod is formed an upwardly bent portion or loop 19, to which the iexible member 1l` is secured, preventing` longitudinal displacement. The other extremity of said rod is bent at right angles and formed into a downwardly depending' hook member 20, which is adapted to partially surround the pole the end 21 thereof being inclined slightly upwardly forming a spring clasp. By this means, when it is desired to put a curtain upon the pole, the upper edge of the curtain 22 is laid upon the pole between the pivots 18 and the rod 15 pressed against the pole causing the hook member 20 to securely clamp the curtain in place.

Near the free ends of the flexible members 4L are suitable means for holding the curtain pole at any desired height. This consists preferably of a pair of rings 24, joined together by an interposed strip 25. The rings are of greater diameter than the bore of the tubular members 3, to serve as a stop to prevent the fiexible members 4t from passing entirely from the members 3 in case the flexible members should accidentally slip from the hands and also when placing the curtain on the pole, so as to permit free use of both hands. Below the rings Q4 is an extension 26 of the member l which remains within easy reach of the operator when the rings are in engagement with the ends 18 of the members 3.

I-Iaving described my invention what I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent is:

1. A curtain pole and means for supporting the same comprising a pair of substantially U-shaped members, in combination with Hexible members running through said U-shaped members, curtain fastening devices comprising wire clamping members secured to said pole and arranged longitudinally thereof, said members being formed with loops intermediate their ends, and the ends of said flexible members being secured to said loops, substantially as described.

2. A curtain pole and means for supporting the same comprising a pair of inverted U-shaped tubular members in combination with curtain fastening devices on said pole, said devices comprising wire clamps extending longitudinally upon the upper face of the pole, flexible members running through said U-shaped members and secured at one end to said fastening devices, said clamps being formed with loops to receive the ends of said flexible. members and the outer end of each of said U-shaped members being notched to receive said wire clamps when the pole is raised into posit-ion, substantially as described.

3. A curtain pole in combination with means for securing a curtain thereto, said means comprising a pair of wire members arranged longitudinally thereof and together of less length than the pole, each secured at its outer end to the pole adjacent the ends thereof, said members being provided with an eye at one end and a screw passing through said eye into the pole and the inner ends of said members being provided with a spring clasp for detachably engaging the pole, substantially as described.

4. In a device of the class described, a bracket member comprising a tube bent to form an inverted U-shaped member' having a pair of depending arms, one of said arms being longer than the other and provided on its outer face with a pair of apertures arranged one above the other, the top aperture being provided with an upwardly extending narrowed extension and the lower end of said arm being cut off at an angle to give access to the lower aperture, substantially as described.
