To all whom it may concern:

Be it known that we, EDWARD MORRISON and VVILLIAM F. FUTRALL, subjects of the King of Great Britain and Ireland, and ALEXANDER. EGLINSKI, a citizen of the United States, and, all residing at Lorain, county of Lorain, and State of Ohio, have in vented certain new and useful Improvements in Brackets for Supporting WVindow Shades, Curtains, and Overdrapes, of which the following is a full, clear, concise, and exact description, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which our invention appertains to make and use the same.

Our invention relates to brackets for supporting window shades, curtains and overdrapes,, and particularly to brackets as are adaptable for use in order to support window shades which may be rolled on rollers and drawn down against the power of a spring to cover the window or a portion thereof, the same being adapted to be rewound upon the roller in awell-known way whenever it is. desired so to do.

It is an object of our invention to provide such a bracket wherein means are provided for supporting decorative curtains and over drapes, the same being supported on the said bracket by a support-ing arm, which arm is removably secured to the said bracket.

It is a further object of our invention to provide a constructlon of main supporting bracket which will be adjustable so as to support window shade rollers of varying lengths without removing the wooden screws by which said brackets are held in the woodwork, my improved bracket construction comprising a stationary portion secured to the woodwork, and a longitudinally adjustable portion which may be moved laterally toward and away from the ends of the shade roller in order to accommodate the bracket to the length of the particular shade roller used; and also in such a bracket construction to provide a removable arm carried by the said stationary bracket and removably secured thereto. and upon which arm flattened tubular curtain and overdrape supports may be removably supported.

Another object of our invention is to provide such a bracket construction as will be inexpensive and simple to manufacture, and which may be quickly and expeditiously applied to the ordinary window frame.

Referring now to all of the figures in all of which like parts are designated by like reference characters, at 1 and 2 We show v a pair of bracket base members adapted to be secured by wood screws 3 and 4; to the side. These base members frames 6 of a window. 1 and 2 are provided for carrying the complementary shade roller supporting members 7 and 8; the only difference between the member 7 and the member 8 is that the member 7 has a longitudinal preferably rec tangular opening 9 adapted to receive the flattened end rod 13 which is the ordinary flattened end of the ordinary roller and which has substantially parallel sides. The member 8 is provided with a circular opening 10, which is adapted to receive a cylindrically shaped end rod 11 of the roller 12. It is the flattened end rod 13 located within the slot 9 that prevents relative rotation of one of the two parts of the rewinding spring mechanism as ordinarily provided in the roller, in the well. known manner, and which need not be described.

-The base members 1 and 2 are formedof sheet metal, and have portions 14 of their sides turned over so as to form a slideway within which the base portions 15 of the bracket elements 7 and 8 may slide, the

slideway formed by the turned-over portions 14 of the base members 1 and 2 extending from one end of the bracket nearly to the other end, a sp'ace 16 being provided at the said other end in whichspace the base members are perforated as at 17 for the reception vof wood screws 3, whereby the base member may be rigidly secured to the woodon window frame.

The base members 1 and 2 have end portions turned at right angles to the main portion, such end portions being shown at 18 for the base member 1, and 19 for the base member 2, these being perforated as shown at 20, and are adapted to overlie the edges of the window frames, the perforations 20 in each being adapted to receive wood screws such as the wood screws at illustrated in Fig. 1 to more rigidly secure the base members 1 and 2 to the window frame. The bracket elements 7 and 8 are L-shaped, and comprise an up-right arm 21 and an arm 22 disposed at right angles thereto, the arm 22 being perforated and screw threaded at 23 to receive a threaded machine screw 24 therein, and which we preferably provide with a winged head 25.

The arm 22 is of greater width than an interconnecting neck portion 25 which interconnects the arms 21 and 22, so that the portion 22 may fit within the slot or slideway provided by the turned over portions 14 of the base member 1, and the winged machine screw when turned down slightly will clamp the L-shaped bracket members 7 and 8 tightly to the base member 1. By this means the L-shaped bracket members may be adjusted to any given position in the slideway, and when the desired position is reached, commensurate with the length of the roller to be used, and the roller will be held by means of the bracket elements 7 and S, the. winged head machine screw will be turned down to tightly clamp the L- shaped roller holders in adjusted position.

The turned down portions 18 of the frame members 1 and 2 of portions 26 have their sides turned over so as to form a slideway for the reception of an arm 27 of 'a. curtain and over-drape supporting arm 28, and which portion 27 is adapted to fit between the body of the turned down end portions of the main-frames 1 and 2, and the turned over portions 26 thereof, the arms 27 of the member 28 being disposed at right angles to the stems 28 thereof adapted to snugly fit within the said slideway.

The portions 27 of the members 28 are perforated at 29, such perforations being adapted to overlie the perforations 20 in the turned down end portions of the main frames so that a wood screw passing through the perforations 29 and 20 of one of the bracket structures will securely hold the same to the wood frame and prevent the curtain and overdrape supporting member from leaving or being moved within the slideway provided by the turned over sides 26 of such members 18 and 19.

The curtain and overdrape supporting arm has its upper end terminating in an enl'arged U-shaped portion, the said U-shaped portion having forwardly projecting arms 30 and 31, the said arms being joined by an intermediate portion 32, and the said arms terminating at their upward outer front corners in hooks 33 and 34, the arm 30, being the outermost arm, is made somewhat longer than the arm 31, so that there may be supported on'the said arms a pair of telescoping overdrape supporting members 35 and 36. the said members 35 and 36 each comprising portions 37 and 38 of larger and smaller transverse sectional area respectively whereby the smaller sections may fit within the larger one, whereby a telescoping connection is had between the sections 37 and 38, and therefore the members 35 and 36 may be lengthened or shortened depending on the adjustment longitudinally of the bracket supporting main frames 1 and 2, which adjustment depends upon the distance between the window frames 6.

The window curtain and overdrape supporting arms are like the main frame members, and the said L-shaped members stamped from sheet metal, and are preferably made in a single piece, whereby economy in manufacture and durability in use is had. It will be seen that the curtain and overdrape supporting arm is herein carried directly on the curtain bracket frame, thus eliminating the necessity of separate means to secure such an arm or arms, where more are used, to the 1 wood window frame.

The arrangement herein illustrated and described enables the curtains, over-drapes and shade to be carried on an adjustable frame, supported on the window frames by a single set of wood screws, and which wood screw positionin needs not be changed when shade rollers of different lengths are employed; by using sheet metal in the. form shown, a great rigidity is had, and which prevents displacement of the supporting parts, when, for instance, the curtains or over-drapes are accidentally pulled, and which displacement is inherent in supporting means formed of wire or sheet metal prior constructions.

Having thus described our invention as embodied in a specific structure, we are aware that numerous and extensive departures may be made from the embodiment herein illustrated and described, but without departing from the spirit of our invention.

Vie claim V In a bracket for attachment to the side frame members of a window, the combination with a flattened base member, said base member being of greater length than width and being formed of a single strip of sheet metal, said base member having turned-over side portions to form a slide-way disposed longitudinally of a main portion of the base member, an L-shaped window shade roller holding bracket having one of its arms of greater width than the connecting neck portion between the arms, said greater width portion being adapted to be received within the slide-way, and adapted to be moved longitudinally of the frame member within the slideway to any one of various desired positions, a threaded set screw adapted to clamp said member to the base member, said screw being adapted to hold the L-shaped member in any set adjusted position, said bracket having an opening adapted to receive the end of a shade roller, said base member having a turned down portion disposed at right angles to the main portion of the frame member and a wood screw receiving opening in the turned down portion adapted to permit a wood screw to pass therethrough to secure the end of the said frame member to a side of the wood frame of the window, said base member turned down end portion having turned over sides whereby a slideway is provided within said last named portion, a substantially L-shaped flat sheet metal curtain support having a curtain rod engaging prong extending upwardly therefrom, the lower arm of said L-shaped support adapted to slide in the said last named slideway and to fit snugly therein, said wood screw adapted to pass through and lock said support in the slideway, said prong adapted to fit into a curtain rod opening to carry the curtain rod.
