' COMBINED CURTAIN AND SHADE HOLDER Filed July 26, 1,930
Patented Jan. 27, 1931 JbI-IN. RASP, OF MCKEESPORT, PENNSYLVANIA COMBINED CURTAIN ANnsHanE HOLDEn' Application filed July 26,
This invention relates to a combined curtain and shade holder, and it is an object of the invention to provide a holder of this kind comprising in its complete assembly a pair of brackets together with one or more. connecting rods, each of the brackets and the end portions of the rod having coacting means whereby the rod is efiectively maintained in applied position with respect to the brackets. 1
It is .also an object of the invention" to provide a device of this kind including a bracket formed from a single piece of material and which is p'rovidedwith a mounting for a shade roller together with supporting means for the extremity of one or more rods.
An additional object of the invention is to provide a device of this kind including a bracket of a type to permit it being employed to advantage in connection with a window frame or the like, having a back strip or finish.
The invention consists inthe details of construction and in the combination and ar- 2 rangement of the several parts of my improved combined curtain and shade holder whereby certain important advantages are attained and the device rendered simpler, less expensive and otherwise more convenient and advantageous for use as will be hereinafter more fully set forth.
The novel features of my invention will hereinafter be definitely claimed.
In order that my invention may be the better understood, I will now proceed to de scribe the same with reference to the accompanying drawing, wherein Figure 1 is an elevational view illustrating a combined curtain and shade holder constructed in accordance with an embodiment of my invention, the shade being applied thereto;
Figure 2 is aview in perspective of the rear of one of the brackets comprised in my improved holder, an extremity of a. coacting rod being indicated by broken lines;
Figure 3 is a view in top plan of the bracket as illustrated in Figure 2, coacting rods and shade roller. being indicated in fragment by broken lines;
1930. Serial no. 471,005.
"Figure 4L- is a front'elevational view of the outer end portion of one-of thearms of the bracket. i
As herein disclosed, my improved combined curtain and shade holder comprises two brackets B and a plurality 'offcurta'in rods R, the brackets 13 comprisinga right and a left, while each of the rods R consists of telescoping sections whereby the device may be employed with facility in connection with window and door openings of varying widths. V
As herein embodied, each of the brackets Bis formed from one piece of materialand the construction and arrangement ofthe various parts are such to permit theholdeifito' be'completed with two operations, thus materially reducing the :cost of productionyet at :the same time in no way affecting the efficiency of the bracket. #In its construction the bracketB comprises. an elongated flat and relatively narrow plate 1 adapted to be secured in desired position upon a window, door frame or other support byscrews or the like engagedthrough the-opening 2 and notch 3 in the extremities of:the plate 1.
At the central portion of its outer'longitudinal marginthe plate 1 is provided with an outstanding. bracket plate 4 provided with requisitemeans wherebyan end portion .ofa shade roller 5 may be engaged therewith in a conventional manner. The opposite or inner longitudinal marginal portionof the plate 1 at-desired points therealong is provided with the outwardly disposed short arms 6 of equal length and which armsu6 arecontinned by the outwardly disposed curved arms 7 each substantially in plan inthe formof a semi-circle. It is to be noted in Figure 3 that the arms 7 in succession terminate one :in- Wardly from the other from above to below.
The free end portion of each of the arms 7. is continued bya forwardly and downwardly inclined short arm 8 inwardly. offset with respect to the arm 7 orconnected thereto by an intermediate and integral connecting web or flange 9 disposed .on ya requisite incline. The inner upper portion of the short arm 8 terminates abovezthe adjacent end of the web or flange 9 providing a locking lug 10 for a purpose to be hereinafter more particularly referred to. r
In applying a rod R to a bracket an end portion of said rod telescopically receives the short arm 8 and the upstanding lug 10 is received within an opening 11 in the upper portion of the rod R resulting in effective locking of the rod R in applied position and more especially when the opposite end portions of the rod are engaged with the required arms of both brackets. In first applying a rod R the same may be readily engaged with a short arm 8 by inclining the rod ac cordingly. The second extremity of the rod can be readily snapped on the rod of the second bracket and which action is facilitated by the certain limited twisting action of an arm 7 afforded by the inherent resiliency possessed thereby.
In removing an applied rod B it is necessary that one of the arms 7 with which the rod is engaged be initially twisted sufficient to allow the associated end portion of the rod to he slid therefrom whereupon the rod may be easily freed from the arm of the second bracket.
By providing the short arms 6 a bracket B may be applied to a window or door frame immediately adjacent to a strip of back trimming which is now generally employed this materially increasing the advantageous use of the bracket.
From the foregoing description it is thought to be obvious that a combined curtain and shade holder constructed in accordance with my invention is particularly Well adapted for use by reason of the convenience and facility with which it may be assembled and operated, and it will also be obvious that my invention is susceptible of some change and modification without departing from the principles and spirit thereof and for this reason I do not wish to be understood as limiting myself to the precise arrangement and formation of the several parts herein shown in carrying out my invention in practice except as hereinafter claimed.
I claim A holder of the class described, comprising a body plate, a U-shaped curtain rod supporting arm secured at one end to said plate, an inwardly extending reduced extension secured to the free end of said arm and a curtain rod engaging member secured to said extension and disposed in parallel relation to said plate, said curtain rod engaging member having the upper edge disposed upwardly of the upper edge of said reduced extension whereby to provide a locking member adipted to be positioned in a slotted curtain ro In testimony whereof I hereunto afiix my signature.
