FOUNTAIN-PEN CLIP.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented July 15, 1919.
Application filed April 17, 1919. Serial No. 290,717.
To all whom it may concern Be it known that I, JosnrH WARREN Kns- SEL, a citizen of the United States, residing at Brooklyn, in the county of Kings and State of New York, have invented a new and useful F ountain-Pen Clip, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to improvements in clips used in connection with pens, pencils and the like for detachably securing the same in the pockets of the wearer.
The principal object of the invention is to provide a device of this character which may be secured to the article used in c0mbination therewith, in such a way that the same will be rigid and free from lateral moxement when in use.
A further object is to provide means for securing a clip to an article whereby the same becomes a permanent part thereof, thereby obviating the impractical rings or bands frequently employed for securing clips to pens, pencils and the like.
In the drawings, Figure 1 discloses an elevational view of a cap, showing a clip secured thereto in accordance with my invention; Fig. 2 discloses a side elevational view partly in section of the clip proper attached to a cap; Fig. 3 discloses a horizontal sectional view of the clip showing the means for securing the clip; and Fig. I is a sectional side elevation of a cap or shell having a recessed portion to receive a clip.
In the modified form of my invention as shown by Fig. at of the drawing, the base portion 10 is shown as positioned in the groove 6 formed in the inner wall of the cap 5', the portion 11' which connects the base 10 and finger 12 passes through the opening 9 in said cap. A rivet 16 is also employed with this form of the invention for securing the clip to the cap 5.
Referring now to the drawings in detail, 5 designates a shell or barrel having a substantially narrow groove 6 extending from one extremity thereof, alon its side and terminating short of the end I, the wall 8 at one end of the groove being slightly beveled as at 9, for the purposes to be hereinafter explained.
The clip proper comprises a base portion 10 of a length equal to the length of the groove 6, and is provided with a finger 11 to engage the beveled wall 9 of the groove 6, thereby relieving the securing means of vertlcal strain when the clip is brought into use.
The a *m 12, having a knob 13 on one end thereof, forms a continuation of the base 10 and is bent in a manner whereby the same lies parallel with the pen cap and cooperates therewith in its grasping action, thus providing detachable means for securing the pen or the like to which the clasp is secured to the pocket of the wearer.
The base 10 is prowided with an opening 1-1 registering with the opening 15 in the shell or cap 5, and accommodates the securing pin 16, which as shown is in the form of a rivet, and it will be seen that when a clip is to be secured to a cap or the like, the base portion 10 is positioned in the groove 6, with the finger 11 closely engaging the beveled wall 9 of the. groove 6, the securing pin 16 is then positioned in the registering openings 14 and 15, thereby rigidly securing the clip to the shell or cap used in combination therewith.
What is claimed is 1. In combination with a pen cap having a groove formed therein, a beveled wall forming one end of the groove, a clip having a base portion and an arm forming a continuation of the base, said base being positioned within the groove, a finger formed at the point of intersection of the base and arm, said finger engaging the beveled end of the groove for holding the finger against lateral movement and means for securing the base to the pen cap.
2. In combination with a pen cap having a groove formed therein, said groove having a pocket formed at one end thereof, a clamping arm having a base section positioned in the groove, the base section having a finger fitted in the pocket of the groove, and means for securing the arm to the pen cap.
In testimony that I claim the foregoing as my own I have hereto aflixed my signature in the presence of two witnesses.
JOSEPH WARREN KESSEL.
