'POCKETYPENCIL-HOLDER."
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 627,056, dated June 13, 1899. Application filcd.Apri16, 1899. serial 711,959. (No model.)
To all whom it may-concern:
Be it known that I, FRANK W. EVERETT, of the city ofNew York,- county of Kings,-and State of New York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Pocket Pencil- .llolders, of which the following is a full, clear,
and exact description.
My inventionrelates to improvements in that class of devices which are intended to be attached to the pocket of a coat or waistcoat pens, pencils, combs, and other small articles usually carried in the pocket in such a position that they will not be accidentally lost and can be readily reached when desired. A
The special object of my invention is to produce a device of this character which is cheap and simple, which ean be applied to the inner side and upper edge of the pocket, so as to be hidden from view, which is shaped in such a way as easily as if the holderor retain-ing device were not there, which firmly place, which out in any wayinjuring the same, which can be as easily removed wien necessary, and cheap is extremely serviceable. 7
To these ends my invention consists of a pocket pencil holder the construction of which willbe hereinafter specifically de scribed and claimed.
In, the drawings, wherein similar figures of reference designate similar parts, Figure 1 is:
a broken front elevation of a waistcoat having my plan of the holder as applied to the pocket. Fig. 3 is a broken'perspective view, partly in section, of the holder; and Fig. 4c is a transverse section thereof.
The holder-10 is of a generally fiat shape, so that it will lie snugly along the inner side and upper edge of the pocket, and it is made of elastic and frictional material, preferably rubber, so that it will yield when the pencil or other article is pushed between it and the pocket-back and reacting will grip the article and hold it in place. To increase its gripping properties, it is roughened on its inner side, as shown at 11, and its upper edge is beveled or inclined, as at 12, so that it will upon a central metallic that an article can be placed and the holder.
being accidentally improved holder attached thereto. in case the wearer of the garment stoops or as they do the back of the pocket incident. with the pocket edge, but lies jus'ta little below the same, as shown in Fig. 1.
To give to the holder the necessary strength and also to prevent it from sagging and injuring the set of the garment attached, the body of the holder is formed plate or web 13, which extends longitudinally being covered, however, at its ends, and this plate isthin and light, so as not to materially alfectthe resiliency of the holder. vals on the back of the plate are hooks/14, which are preferably punchcd'out from the plate, someof which prdject upward, while othersmmjeet dowm'vard,";and similar hooks are formed at the and on the front side thereof. are intended to engage the cloth of the garment to'which the holder is attached, and as it is held at the ends, at both edges, and in the center by hooks pointing both upward and downward it cannot he accidentally displaced.
When the holder is in position, as shown in Fig. 1, thepencil, inserted in the pocket precisely as usual and pen, or other article is to which it is At inter extreme ends of the plate These books is gripped firmly between the pocket-back In this way the article is prevented from being laterallydisplaced and can always be grasped when needed; but the grip is sufficient to prevent the article from dropped from the pocket assumes any uuusual'position. It will also be noticed that the front books 14 grasping will cause the holder to close the mouth of the pocket,
and thus itwill serve as a retainer to prevent the accidental or felonious loss of a watch or other valuable article.
Having thus described my invention, 1 U
claim as new and desire to secure by Letters latent- I 1. The combination with a garment pocket of a resilient band-like holder, said holder having laterally-projecting hook-s thereon to engage the material forming the pocket, substantially as described.
2. As an improved article of mam facture a pocket pencil-holder comprising a central stiifening-plate and a'frictional resilient coating entirely covering the plate, the said coat- 7 a pocket pencil-holder comprising a frictional I holder to a pocket-,substantially as described.-
onter su-rface, an inner inclosed stiffeningplate, and fastening means for securing the 4.: As an improved articleof manufacture a pocket pencil-holder comprising a resilient frictional band-like device having embedded therein a l'ongitudinally -e xtendin g stiflen'ing scribed.
5'; The combination with the centralstifiE- ening-plate having lateral hooks struck up therefrom and projecting from both sides thereof, of a coat of frictional material covl ering, said plate, but leaving the hooks exposed, substantially as described.
I FRANK W. EVERETT. Witnesses:
CHARLES. J. IIOEHNLE 'J. A. E. CRISWELL.
