UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
EDI/VIN F. GOULD, OF MACHIAS, MAINE.
VEST PENClL' HOLDER.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 585,669, dated July 6, 1897.
Application flled September 12, 1896. $erial No. 605,635. (No model.) 3
T0 aZZ whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, EDWIN F. GOULD, a citizen of the United States, residing at Machias, in the county of WVashington and State of Maine, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Vest Pencil-Holders; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
My invention relates to improvements in pen and pencil holders, the object of the same being to provide a device adapted to be secured to the outside of a vest, coat, or other garment, adjacent to the pocket thereof, through which pens or pencils may be passed for the purpose of preventing them from dropping out of the pocket accidentally.
The invention consists ofa plate having a pin at the upper end thereof for attaching the same to the outside of a vest or other garment, a curved strip of metal secured to the front face of said plate, and a hollow band of rubber secured to the inner surface of said strip and partially closing the space between said strip and said plate.
The invention also consists in other details of construction and combinations of parts, which will be hereinafter more fully described and claimed.
In the drawings forming part of this specification, Figure 1 represents a perspective view of my device shown applied to the upper pocket of a vest. Fig. 2 is a top plan view of the same. Fig. 3 is a vertical cross-section through the same, and Fig. 4 is a horizontal longitudinal section.
Like reference-numerals indicate like parts in the different views.
My improved pencil-holder is made up of a plate 1, curved inwardly, as shown at 2, at a point near its vertical center in the direction of the length of said plate, the upper and lower ends thereof being bent rearwardly, so that they will lie in close contact with the vest or other garment to which the device is applied. On the rear side of the plate 1, at a point near its upper end, a pin 3 is located for the purpose of attaching the plate to the outside of a vest. Secured to the front face of the plate 1, adjacent to the bent or curved portion 2 thereof, is an outwardly-curved strip 4 of metal, having a hollow band 5 of rubber or other suitable material secured to the inner face of said strip and partially closing the space between said strip and the plate 1.
In using my device the lower end of the plate 1 is inserted into the upper end of the pocket of a vest or other garment, and the device is secured in place by means of the pin 3. Pens, pencils, or other analogous devices are then adapted to be inserted through the space between the strip 4 and the plate 1 into the pocket. When thus in place, they are prevented from falling from the pocket accidentally by means of the engagement of the rubber band 5 therewith. By reason of the fact that the band 5 of rubber is formed hollow the device is adapted to hold pencils of any size or thickness, and when used with a thick pencil does not become inoperative afterward for thin pencils.
Having now described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
1. The herein-described pencil-holder, consisting of a plate adapted to be secured to a vest or other garment adjacent to the pocket thereof, an outwardly-curved strip secured to said plate, and a band of rubber or other suitable material secured to the inner surface of said strip and partially closing the space between said strip and said plate, as and for the purpose set forth.
2. The herein-described pencil-holder, consisting of a plate, a pin at the upper end there- EDlVIN F. GOULD.
Witnesses:
EDWARD E. TALBOT, GEORGE F. CARY.
