T0 (ZZZ whom it mayemicern:
Be 1t known that I, HARLAN MOORE, a
citizen of the United States, and residenflof New lork, in the county of New York, and
in the State of New York, have invented a certain new and useful Improvement in Garment-Supporters, and do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description thereof.
In garment suspending means, or supporters, in which straps, or bandsare employed, the suspending, or supporting member, either in whole or in part, has been made of elastic material, some degree of elasticity being looked upon as indispensable, and this is especially true in the case of stocking supporters, or garters which encircle the leg of the wearer. The useful life of the device is limited to the durationof its elasticity, and ordinarily a supporter, or suspender, while perfect in all other respects and capable of further long continued use, must be thrown away, or discarded when the elasticity is gone. The object of my invention is to avoid the waste, or loss whichcomes from the necessity of discardingthe article merely because its elasticity has gone, and to do so at a minimum of expense, andby means which the wearer can easily and C011." veniently employ, and to this end my invention consists of the device substantially as hereinafter specified and claimed and which invention in one of its forms is illus trated in the accompanying drawings, which 1n perspective illustrates a stocking supporter, or garter embodying my invention.
The suspender, or supporter shown in the drawing as one embodiment of my invention, is a mans garter, which, as usual, comprises the leg encircling strap, or band 10, and a sock-engaging clasp 11 suspended therefrom. The leg encircling band, as usual, is provided with a detachable connection, such as a hook and loop for the ready application and removal of the band. The sock clasp 11 is attached to and is suspended from the leg band by a cord, or narrow tape 12, which has a V-form, the clasp being situated at the apex of the V so that from its clasp said tap-e diverges outward and upward. That portion of the leg-encircling band which extends between the upper diverging ends of the V consists of an elastic member 13, whereas the remainder of the band as well as the clasp-suspending tape are inelastic so that the elastlcity of the band itself.

band resides wholly in said member 13, and, therefore, 1s the only part which is subject to that rapid deterioration which takes place in devices of the kind in question, due to loss of elasticity by reason of the strain to which it is subject in wear, and, particularly, to the rotting effect of body perspiration, although in all other respects the device may be capable of long continued use. I make said member 13 removable by detachably which, asshown, is in the form of a short piece of elastic webbing,or strap. By providing several buttons for each end of said member, or strap, adjustment of the diameter, or size of the leg band to compensate for some slight loss of elasticity, or to give the leg band the desired fit upon the leg may be had, and this may be in addition to the usual adjustment for varying the length of the band, which is provided upon the It will be seen that by. my invention, such wear, or deterioration of the elastic member as would necessitate throwing away the entire device, even though in all other respects itmight be perfectly good, is obviated, and the matter of converting the suspender, or supporter from a worthless thing to one capable of further use, involves nothing more than the simple separation of a short strap and its replacement by another. The selling cost of these renewal elastic mem- The matter of convenience and comfort to the user, will be evident. Thus, one in traveling, who by the unexpected failure of the elastic member at a time, or place when he could not procure a new set of garters, would avoid annoyance and discon'ifort simply by the sub stitution of a new elastic strap which at trifling cost and with no inconvenience he could. carry with him.
Having thus described my invention what I claim is- 1. A garment suspending means comprising a garment-engaging element attachable to and removable fromthe garment, and a band with which said garment-engaging ele- .nection at each end of the said member, 7
ment'isconnecte'd, said band having an elastic section detachably connected at both extremities With the main portion of the band whereby. said elastic section may be replaced by a fresh elastic section, and separable means for connecting and disconnecting said band for its application and removal, carried, independently of said elastic section, by the said main portion of said band.
2. A hose supporter comprising a triangular member formed of two downwardly converging straps and a horizontal strap, the
latterbeing elastic and removably attached at its ends, hose-engaging means at the bottom of said member and a leg-encircling band attached to the top of said member.
Iii-testimony that I claim the foregoing I have hereunto set my hand.
HARLAN MOORE.
