Specification of Lettrs'latent.

Application filed December 11, 1917. Serial No. 206,605.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it knownthat I, MAssoUD NAHAs, subject of Mohammad, Sultan of Turkey, residing at Akron, in the county of Summit and State of Ohio, have invented new and useful Improvements in Shade-Holders and Curtain-Pole Supports, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to improvements in combined shade holders and curtain pole supports for use in connection with window or door openings and the object of the in-' vention is to provide a device capable of being self-sustaining within the frame or case of a wndow or door without injury thereto or without the use of screws, bolts or adhesives and which can be removed-and changed at will without marring the finish of the wood work of the casing. A further object of the invention is to provide brackets for sustaining the shade so that the device is capable of supporting within reasonable limits shades of varying lengths. The device is more particularly adaptable for use in connection with temporary tenants of a building where the brackets for supporting the curtain pole and shade are frequently changed. removed and replaced and by the use of which the tenant or the land-lord can furnish adequate supports for curtain poles and shade without mar-ring the wood work each time the position of the device is changed.
lVith the foregoing and other objects in view, the invention consists in the novel construction, combination and arrangement of parts constituting the invention. to be hereinafter specifically described and illustrated in the accompanying drawings which form a part hereof wherein is shown the preferred embodiment of the invention, but it is to be understood that changes, variations and modifications can be resorted to which come within the scope of the matter hereinafter claimed. I k p In the drawings in which siinilar refer ence numerals indicate like parts in the different figures,
Figure 1 is a front elevation of a portion of oneside of a window or door casing with a portion of one end of my improved device shown in side elevation.
Fig. 2 is a view similar to Fig. 1 of the opposite side of the casing with the complem'entai bracket in position thereon and with portions of the supporting device shown in section to better illustrate the construction of the same.
Fig. 3 is a sectional view taken approximately on line 3 of Fig. 2.
Fig. 1 is a perspectiveview of the device shown in Fig. 1.
Fig. 5 is a plan view of a portion of the device shown in Fig. 1.
Fig. 6- is a similar View of another portion of the device shown in Fig. 1, and
Fig. 7 is a horizontal sectional View taken approximately on line 7 of Fig. 1.
The device which forms the subject matter of the present invention comprises a pair of end plates 1 and 2 each preferably formed of stiff sheet metal, a rounded bead 3 along the upper edge thereof for stiffening purposes. The plate 1 is provided with a laterally projecting integral tubular socket a provided with screw threads 5 and the plate 2 is provided with a similar socket 6 provided with screw threads 7 reversely disposed with respect to the inclination of the threads on the socket 4. The sockets 4L and 6 are preferably formed of thin sheet metal with the threads thereof spun or forced inwardly by suitable mechanism. Extending between the sockets 4 and 6 is a pole 8 provided at the ends thereof with reversely disposed threads capable of meshing respec tively with the threads 5 and 7 and adapted when rotated in one direction to force the plates 1 and 2 away from each other and when rotated in the opposite direction to draw these plates toward each other. The device is positioned between two side walls 9 and 10 of a door or window casing by retracting the plates 1 and 2 through the medium of the pole 8 and when properly positioned reversing the direction of the rotation of the pole 8 and forcing the plates 1 and 2 into frictional engagement with inner opposing faces of the walls 9 and 10 thereby holding the entire I device in position.
One of the plates (1 for example) is provided with an inwardly projecting convex integral boss 11 in which is a slot '12 for receiving the shank end 13 of a shade roller and the plate 2 is provided with a similar boss 14 provided with a central aperture 15 to constitute a bearing for the opposite stem end of a conventional shade roller 16.
The remaining portions of the two bracketsare identically similar and it is believed a description of one will be suflicient for the understanding of them both. The front end of each plate or bracket is provided with a bent back portion 17 approximately hook shaped in transverse cross section and further provided near the end of the bent portion with a. vertically extending ridge 18 adapted to cooperate with the end of the bent back portion 17. The space between the inbent portion 17 and the main wall of the bracket provides a vertical socket 19 one side of whichis formed by one of the members 1 or 2 and the inbent portion 17 and the'open end of the inbent portion by the vertical ridge 18. At the lower portion of each of the members 1 and 2 is a lug 20 which closes the socket 19. Arranged to cooperate with either one of the plates 1 or 2 is a combined shade and curtain pole supporting bracket comprising a strip of stiff metal'21 having at one end an inbent portion 22 approximately hook shaped in transverse cross section and arranged to cooperate with and be received in the socket 19 of either one of the plates'l or The upper edge of the bracket is castellated providing a series of upper projecting lugs 23 between which are slots 24. Arranged to be seated on the lugs 28 are auxiliary shade supports 2% each embodying a looped end 25 arranged to fit over one of the lugs 23 and with the opposite end projecting forwardly into the room and one of which is provided with a vertical slot 26 to receive the shank end ofa shade roller and with the other provided with an opening 27 to constitute a bearing for the stem end of the same roller. These shade supports 24 are capable of being shifted from one lug 23 to another easily and quickly to thereby regulate the distance between the two supports for acconnnodating them to shades of varying lengths. Secured to the free end of each of the brackets 21 is a curtain pole support comprising a lower arm 27 terminating in an upturned end 28 in which is a. clamping screw 29 and cooperating with the arm 27 is a brace 30 extending from near the top of each of the brackets 21 and secured b I holding means 31 to the arm 27. The end of the bracket or arrn30 which is attached to the arm 27 isfashioned to form in connection with the end 28 of the arm 27 an approximately semicircular bracket for the support of a curtain rod 33.
In use the two plates are simultaneously forced against the inner faces of the walls 9 and 10 of a window or door opening by rotating said pole 8 and are held thereby.
The two brackets 21 are then positioned. If
the space between the lugs 11 and 14: is suitable a shade roller 16 bearing a shade 32 is mounted therein in the ordinary manner. If for any reason the shade to be used in connection with the window is longer than will nicely t in the before mentioned sup; ports the two shade supports 24 are adjusted to accommodate the shade roller by changing their positions on the lugs 23. The arm 27 in connection with the brace 30 constitutes a support for a curtain pole which is held in position by a clamping screw 29 in the usual manner. It is also obvious, of course, that the threaded pole 8 may be utilized for carrying a curtain if desired.
I claim,
1. In combination, a pair of plates adapted to be retained in parallel alined position against the opposite inner faces of the side walls of a door or window opening, said plates each having similiar end portions bent baclnvardly in spaced parallel relatlon to the body thereof'to form a socket, a vertical transverse rib on each plate adjacent the free end of the backwardly bent portion thereof. a lug on each plate to close the lower end of the socket thereof, and a supporting bracket carrying plate arranged at a right angle to each of said first named plates and having a U-shaped end adapted for remow able reception in said socket.
2. A device of the class described comprising a pair of spaced parallel sheet metal plates having tubular oppositely threaded sheet metal sockets integral therewith and projecting laterally therefrom, said plates being adapted to be disposed against the opposite inner faces of the side walls of a door or window opening with the sockets alined and extending toward eachother, and a pole extending between said plates having oppositely threaded ends threaded into said sockets whereby, when the pole is rotated in one direction, the plates are separated and forced into contact with said opening faces.
in testimony whereof I have hereunto set my hand.
MASSOUD NAHAS.
