June 24, 1958 c. H. MILLS FIXTURE FOR HOLDING CURTAIN ROD BRACKETS Filed March 5, 1956 INVENTOK (Ki Z655 A. M12475 2,840,335 Patented June 24, 1958 FIXTURE FOR HOLDING CURTAIN ROD BRACKETS Charles H. Mills, Jackson Heights, N. Y.
ApplicationMarch 5, 1956, Serial No. 569,429
3 Claims. (Cl. 248261) This invention relates to fixtures for holding curtain rod brackets.
It is an object of the present invention to provide a fixture for holding curtain rod brackets which eliminates the use of nails, screws, suction cups or adhesive and wherein the installation of the fixture requires no drilling of holes or driving of nails into the plaster or window trim.
It is another object of the present invention to provide a fixture of the above type which is adaptable to any square edge window opening, which is easy to install and does not deface the wall or window trim, being adjustable to fit various width window openings.
Other objects of the invention are to provide a fixture for holding curtain rod brackets which is of simple construction, has a minimum number of parts, is inexpensive to manufacture and efficient in use.
For other objects and for a better understanding of the invention, reference may be had to the following detailed description taken in connection with the accompanying drawing, in which:
Figure l is a top plan view of a preferred embodiment of the present invention;
Fig. 2 is a front perspective view thereof shown partly broken away;
Fig. 3 is a fragmentary perspective view looking along the line 33 of Fig. 2;
Fig. 4 is a perspective view showing one of the end clamps;
Fig. 5 is a fragmentary perspective view of one of the parts of the invention; and
Fig. 6 is a front elevational view of the invention shown in operative use.
Referring now more in detail to the drawing, 10 indicates generally. a conventional window having the usual frame 11, the inner edges of which are indicated at 12, substantially as illustrated.
In the practice of my invention, a pair of end clamps indicated generally at 13 are provided and include the rectangular front wall 14 having a vertically elongated slot 15. The front wall 14 along the opposite vertical edges thereof is integrally formed with the flanges 16 provided with the aligned vertically elongated slots 17, one of the flanges 16 at the bottom of its slot 17 being integrally formed with the inwardly extending flap 18, adapted to engage the edge 12 of the window frame 11. Rubber facing 19 (Fig. 2) is secured to the portion of each flap 18 adjacent the frame edge 12.
A first elongated rectangular bar 20 is integrally formed at one end with the forwardly ofiset tongue 21 adapted to be slidably passed through the slots 17 of one of the end members 13, the lower edge of the bar 20 in spaced relationship to the offset end portion being integrally formed at right angles thereto with the bottom wall 22 having the longitudinally spaced elongated slots 23.
An angle bracket 24 of steel is riveted to the undersurface of the bottom wall 22 at the end thereof adjacent the tongue 21, the rivets lying flush with the respective 2 surfaces. The slots 23 are dimpled. An eye bolt 25 is screw threaded through the depending portion, of the angle bracket 24 and terminates in the foot 26' adapted to bear on the flap 18 of the adjacent end member 13.
A second elongatedrectangular bar 27 adapted to abut the outer face of the bar 20 in overlapping relationship is formed with the forwardly offset tongue 28 at one end which is slidably received through the slot 17 of the other end clamp 13, the bar 27 along its lower edge being integrally formed at right angles thereto with the bottom wall 29-which underlies the bottom wall 22 of bar 20 in overlapping relationship. Thebottom wall 29 terminates at the end thereof adjacent the end clamp 13 in the depending flap 30 adapted to abut the outer face of the flap 18- adjacent thereto (Fig. 5). The bottom wall 29 is provided with elongated longitudinally spaced slots 23' adapted to be aligned with the slots '23 of the bottom wall 22, these latter slots being dimpled (Fig. 3') while these bottom walls are secured together in adjustable relationship by means of the nut and bolt assemblies 31.
To install the fixture, the curtain rod brackets, not shown, are first mounted on the end clamps 13 by means of small bolts, not shown, which are positioned in the vertical slots 15, as will be obvious. The end clamps 13 are then slipped onto the tongues 28 of the bars 20 and 27. The bars 20 and 27 are then locked together by means of the nut and bolt assemblies 31 so that the rubber faced flaps 18 of the end clamps 13 just clear the sides 12 of the window frame opening 11. fixture is then held in place at the top of the window opening (Fig. 6) and the eye bolt 25 is tightened to apply pressure against the flap 18 of one of the end clamps 13 which at the same time applies opposing pressure against the end flap of the other end clamp, thus holding the fixture tightly in place.
The device may be formed from aluminum angle and channel bars. The slots in the bottom walls 22 and 29 are dimpled so as to permit the heads of the nut and bolt assemblies 31 to lie flush therewith. The vertical slots 15 slidably receiving bolts 35 and nuts 35 will permit the leveling of the rod hangers. Thus, the fixture permits the leveling of the curtain rods should the window opening be out of plumb.
It should now be apparent that there has been provided a fixture for holding curtain rod brackets which requires no nails or screws which would otherwise deface the wall or window trim and which often fail to hold, especially where plaster is the only anchor substance. The fixture also eliminates the patching of holes in plaster or trim when redecorating, requires no special tools to install and permits the curtains to be hung in a matter of minutes with no fuss or bother.
While various changes may be made in the detail construction, it shall be understood that such changes shall be within the spirit and scope of the present invention as defined by the appended claims.
Having thus set forth and disclosed the nature of my invention, what is claimed is:
1. A fixture for holding curtain rods comprising end clamp means adapted to engage the inner vertical edges of the window frame above the window, means for mounting the curtain rods on said end clamp means, adjustable support means, said end clamp means being slidably supported upon the opposite ends of said support means, means for applying pressure to said end clamp means to force the same against the inner edges of the Window frame, each of said end clamp means comprising a front wall integrally formed along the opposite vertical edges with a pair of flanges, said flanges having vertically elongated aligned slots, said front wall having a vertically elongated slit, said means for mounting the curtain rods on said end clamps comprising bolt means positioned 3 l within saidvertically elongated front wall slots for engaging the curtain rod holders, said adjustable means for slidably mounting said end clamps comprising a first elon gated bar having an outwardly ofiset tongue at one end slidably received through said flange slots of one of said end clamps, the-innermost of the flanges of said end clamps having a flap extending away from said front 'walls and adapted to engage the inner edges of the window frame, said bar having abottom wall extending away from said end clamp frontwalls at right angles thereto, a second elongated bar having a forwardly oifset tongue portion at one end adapted to be received through the flange slots of the other of saidend clamps, said second bar along the lower edge being integrally formed at right angles thereto with a second bottom wall extending away from the end clamp front wall and underlying said first bottom wall, said first and second bottom walls having elongated slots, and nut and bolt assembly means within said slots for locking said bars together at adjustable lengths depending on the width of the window.
the end of said first-bottom wall adjacent the tongue pori r 1 a 4 tion of said first elongated bar and having a depending portion, an eye bolt screw threaded through the depending portion of said angle bracket and terminating in a foot member adapted to bear on the flap of the adjacent end clamp, and a second flap integrally formed at the other end of the other of said bottom walls at right angles thereto adapted to engage the flap of the other end clamp.
3. A fixture according to claim 2, including rubber facing on the inner faces of said end clamp flaps in engagement with the edges of the Window frame.
