This invention relates to a support for fixtures, such as curtain or drapery rods, Venetian blinds, cornces and the like, and more particularly to an improved fixture support of the type disclosed in my application Serial No. 347,653, filed April 9, 1953 and now abandoned.

The primary purpose of the present invention is to provide a fixture support adapted to be mounted on opposite walls of a window or other opening and to be firmly secured in place without the use of prongs, screws, nails or other fastening means.

It is further thepurpose of the present invention to provide a fixture support which is easily and quickly installed and removed, which prevents marring, scarring, disfiguring or damaging the wall facing, which is of a simple structure and economical to manufacture, and which is adaptable to various types of fixtures without requiring any additional parts.

These and other features of the present invention are described in detail below in connection with theaccompanying drawing, in which like numerals designate like parts, and in which: f

Referring now in detail to the drawing, the fixture support illustrated in the drawing as an embodiment of the present invention is indicated generally by the reference numeral 10, and as shown, comprises a pair of substantially L-shaped plates or brackets 12 and 14 which are adapted to be disposed in horizontally spaced relation against confronting walls 16 of a wall opening, such as a window, as indicated at 18. The brackets 12 andf'1'4 are located adjacent to a top wall portion 20 for supporting fixtures, such as curtain and drapery supports and the like, without the use of nails or screws as is conventional, or of any other fastening means that penetrate into the wall and thereby marring and damaging the wall. Each of` the brackets 12 and 14 consists of a pair of plates 22 and 24 extending right angularly and integrally connected to each other. Plate 22 of each bracket 12 and 14 being a clamping inner plate is adapted to bear against the confronting walls 16, while plates 24 being front or outer plates are disposed on front wall sides 26 and are provided with spaced openings or apertures 28 for receiving conventional fixture supporting means, not shown. Also plate 22 may be provided with holes28 for the same purpose.

The plate 24 of each bracket 12 and 14 is thus arranged to be disposed at a distance or in spaced relation with the wall 26 so as to prevent any fastening means of the fixtures that may extend through holes 28 when secured to the plate 24 from engaging the wall 26 and damaging the surface thereof.

One of the brackets 12 and 14 is further provided with a pin 40 extending laterally 'inwardly and at right angles from the respective plate 2 2, while the other is provided with a threaded bolt or stud 42 also extending laterally inwardly and at right angles from the respective plate 22. A nut 44 having a pair of diametrically located and axially projecting keys or projections 46 is threadedly engaging the bolt 42. A tubular member 48 adapted to be inserted over the pin 40 at one end and over the bolt 42 at the other end is provided at one end with diametricallyl located and longitudinal extending open edge slots 50 adapted to be engaged by the 'keys 46 of the nut 44, which keys 46 fit into the slots 50.

By this arrangement of the slotted edge of the tubular member 48 and the Anut or 4coupler 44 -with the keys 46, the tubular member 48 'may be adjusted in length by simply turning the nut 44. The nut 44 may be turned either by gripping the same or by gripping and turning the tubular member 48 which provides an easier and better grip, and which in turn turns the nut 44. For facilitating the gripping and turning of the tubular member 48, portion or portions of its surface may be knurled. Turning the nut 44 outwardly on the bolt 42 will increase the length of the tubular member 48 to the limits of the distance between the walls 16, and by further turning the nut 44, the tubular member 48 will cause a force or pressure to be applied on the plates 22 which in turn press tightly vagainst the opposite walls 16. The brackets 12 and 14 are thus firmly held clamped on lthe walls 16 at any selected position without in any way marring or damaging the wall. The xture support 10 is also easily removed by simply turning the nut 44 in an `opposite direction v so as to'move inwardly of the lbolt 42 and away of the tubularmember 48 until the keys 46 may be easily disengagedi'gfrom the slots 50 and the tubular member 48 is then free to be `moved from the pin 40 and bolt 42.

The fixture support of the present invention is also very useful for use on concrete walls on which nails or other fastening means may be driven with great difticulty, and on relatively soft surface walls, such as plastered walls, in which nails or other fastening means are very difficult to be retained, and very often accidents are caused from falling fixtures.
