(1. 248-265) This invention relates to a curtain rod mounting assembly and in particular to the mounting brackets for connecting the curtain rod to the window moldboard.
It is one of the objects to this invention to provide a curtain rod mounting assembly which may be secured to Window moldboards without the use of nails, screws or other Wood penetrating hardware.
It is a further object of this invention to provide a curtain rod mounting assembly which may readily be mounted on the horizontal or vertical window moldboards.
It is a further object of this invention to provide a curtain rod mounting assembly which may be readily removed from a window moldboard.
It is a further object of this invention to provide a curtain rod mounting assembly which may be readily adjusted to fit moldboards having different thickness.
It is a further object of this invention to provide a curtain rod mounting assembly having clamp brackets which are self-aligning relative to each other.
A further object of this invention is to provide a curtain rod mounting assembly which is simple in design economical to manufacture and refined in appearance.
This invention consists in the construction arrangements, and combination of the various parts of the device, whereby the objects contemplated are attained as hereinafter more fully set forth, specifically pointed out in the claims, and illustrated in the accompanying drawings, in which:
FIG. 1 is an exploded elevational view of the cooperating bracket members and representing one embodiment of this invention;
FIG. 2 is a fragmentary perspective, elevation view of a window moldboard having the curtain rod mounting assembly of FIG. 1 clamped to the top portion of the moldboard at one end and supporting a curtain rod at the other end;
FIG. 3 is an exploded view of the cooperating bracket members forming a second embodiment of this invention;
FIG. 4 is a fragmentary, perspective elevation view of a window moldboard having the curtan rod mounting assembly of FIG. 3 secured at one end to the vertical portion of the window moldboard and the other end supporting the curtain rod;
FIG. 5 is a fragmentary view of one of the curtain rod assembly brackets being installed between a moldboard and a wall; and
FIG. 6 is an elevation cross-sectional view of one of the mounting brackets common to both embodiments of this invention taken along lines 66 in FIG. 3.
In FIG. 2, the first embodiment of the curtain rod assembly is shown and referred to generally by the refer- .ence numeral 10. As shown, the curtain rod assembly 113 is clamped to a horizontal window molding 12 which in turn is secured to a wall 13. A curtain 14 is carried by a curtain rod 16 which in turn is mounted on the free end of the curtain rod assembly 10.
The curtain rod assembly Iii comprises basically a first bracket 18 and a second bracket 20 as shown in FIG. 1. Each of the brackets may be formed from any suitable material such as sheet metal or the like. The first bracket 18 has a short portion 22., which is adapted to extend between the wall 13 and the moldboard 12 as shown in FIG. 2. The portion 22 terminates in an integral second portion 24 which is elongated and perpenicular thereto. An elongated slot 26 is formed longitudinally in the second portion 24. Between the inner end of the slot 26 and the first portion 22, an indentation 28 is formed in the portion 24 tranversely thereof. In cross-section, the portion 24 is channel shaped facing in the direction of the portion 22 and having a base 3% with offset side portions 32 and 34. The second bracket 20 which cooperates with bracket 18 to form the assembly 10 comprises a first portion 36 which terminates in a second elongated portion 33 extending at a right angle to the portion 36. The portion 33 is also channel shaped in cross-section and adapted to seat in the channel of the second portion 24 of the bracket 13. A curtain rod support member 39 is provided on the free end of the second portion 38 and comprises a third portion 44) forming the inner sidewall of a channel having a base 42 connected to an opposite sidewall 44. The elongated portion 33 is provided with a hole 45 for alignment with the slot 26 in the portion 24. A bolt 46 is extended through the slot 26 and the hole 45 and secured by a nut 47.
A second embodiment of this invention is shown in FIGS. 3 and 4 and comprises a first bracket similar to bracket 18 in FIG. 1 and thus will be referred by the reference numeral 18'. Other portions of the first bracket 18' Will be referred to by the corresponding reference numerals used in connection with the bracket 18 but with the addition of a prime. The second bracket or" the second emobdiment of this invention is referred to generally by the reference numeral 50 in FIG. 3 and cornprises considerable construction similar to that of the second bracket 29 of the first embodiment in FIG. 1. Specifically, the bracket 5t includes a first portion 52 having a second portion 54 channel shaped in cross-section extending perpendicular thereto. The channel of the second portion 54 faces in the direction of the first portion 52 and has a hole 55 formed therein for alignment with the elongated slot 25' in the bracket 18. A curtain rod support member 56 is integrally formed on the free end of the elongated portion 54. The support member 56 comprises a channel having a side portion 58 integral at one end with the end of the portion 54, a base oil integrally connected at the lower edge of the side portion 58 and to the lower edge of an opposite side portion 62. A bolt s4 and nut 66 is provided for adjustably connecting together bracket 18' and 5% by the bolt 64- being positioned in the slot 26' and extending through the hole 55 in the portion 54 of the bracket St).
The first step of securing the curtain rod mounting assembly to the molding is shown in FIG. 5 The portion 22 of the bracket 13 is inserted between the wall 13 and the molding 12 whereupon a driver such as a screwdriver 68 is positioned in the indentation 228 and then struck by a hammer '79 or the like. In this manner the portion 22 is moved to a position wherein the portion 24- is in engagement with the outer edge of the molding 12. With respect to the first embodiment shown in FIGS. 1 and 2, the second bracket 20 is then placed in a position whereby the portion 36 bears against the outside face of the molding 12 and the two brackets 18 and 2b are secured together by the bolt and nut 4s and 47. Thus it is seen that the curtain rod assembly 10 is securely aifixed to the molding l2 and the curtain rod channel support member 39 is in a position to receive the curtain rod 16. The curtain rod 16 may be easily inserted into or withdrawn from the channel 39.
In the event the curtains 14 are to be secured below the top of the window it is necessary that the curtain rod mounting assembly be secured to the vertical molding arsaaas portion as shown in FIG. 4. Thus the second embodiment of this invention, as shown in FIGS. 3 and 4, is employed because it is so constructed that the curtain rod support channel 56 is facing upwardly to receive the curtain rod 16.
As shown and described, it is obvious that the curtain rod mounting assembly may be easily affixed to any desired window molding and removed therefrom without damaging the molding material since no screws or nails are used to secure the brackets to the wall or the mold- Some changes may be made in the construction and arrangement of my curtain rod mounting assembly without departing from the real spirit and purpose of my invention and it is my intention to cover by my claims, any modified forms of structure or use of mechanical equivalents which may be reasonably included within their scope.
I claim:
1. An assembly for mounting curtain rods on a molding affixed to a wall around the edges of a Window in said wall comprising;
a first place bracket having a first portion and a second elongated portion integral therewith extending at a right angle thereto and said first portion adapted to be secured between said molding and said wall with said second portion extending outwardly from said wall adjacent to the outer edge of said moldmg;
a second plate bracket having a first portion and a second elongated portion integral therewith extending at a right angle thereto and said first portion adapted to abut the opposite side of said molding from said first portion of said first bracket, said second portion of said second bracket extends outwardly from said molding in mating engagement with said second portion of said first bracket;
each of said second portions of said first and second brackets is channel-shaped in transverse cross-section with one of said second portions nested into the other second portion thereby preventing lateral movement between each of said second portions when secured tightly together;
first means for adjustably securing together said second portions of said first and second brackets to hold said molding clamped between said first portions of said first and second brackets, said first means including an elongated slot in one of the second portions of one or" said first and second brackets and a hole formed in the other second portion in alignment with the slot, and a bolt means extending through the slot and the hole; and
a second means provided on the free end of one of said first and second brackets for engagement with a curtain rod. 2
2. The structure of claim 1 wherein first bracket is adapted to be mounted on a vertical Window molding extending along a side of the window and said second means includes an upwardly facing channel portion integral with said free end and having side walls extending in parallel relationship to said first portions of said first and second brackets.
3. The structure of claim 1 wherein said second portion of said first bracket has an elongated indentation parallel and adjacent to said first portion formed in the outer face for receiving an instrument which may be struck to drive said first portion of said first bracket between said molding and said wall.
4. The structure of claim 1 wherein said first portions of said first and second brackets are adjacent the open sides of said channels in said second portions.

Claims (1)
1. AN ASSEMBLY FOR MOUNTING CURTAIN RODS ON A MOLDING AFFIXED TO A WALL AROUND THE EDGES OF A WINDOW IN SAID WALL COMPRISING; A FIRST PLACE BRACKET HAVING A FIRST PORTION AND A SECOND ELONGATED PORTION INTEGRAL THEREWIT EXTENDING AT A RIGHT ANGLE THERETO AND SAID FIRST PORTION ADAPTED TO BE SECURED BETWEEN SAID MOLDING AND SAID WALL WITH SAID SECOND PORTION EXTENDING OUTWARDLY FROM SAID WALL ADJACENT TO THE OUTER EDGE OF SAID MOLDING; A SECOND PLATE BRACKET HAVING A FIRST PORTION AND A SECOND ELONGATED PORTION INTEGRAL THEREWITH EXTENDING AT A RIGHT ANGLE THERETO AND SID FIRST PORTION ADAPTED TO ABUT THE OPPOSITE SIDE OF SAID MOLDING FROM SAID FIRST PORTION OF SAID FIRST BRACKET, SAID SECOND PORTION OF SAID SECOND BRACKET EXTENDS OUTWARDLY FROM SAID MOLDING IN MATING ENGAGEMENT WITH SAID SECOND PORTION OF SAID FIRST BRACKET; EACH OF SAID SECOND PORTIONS OF SAID FIRST AND SECOND BRACKETS IS CHANNEL-SHAPED IN TRANSVERSE CROSS-SECTION WITH ONE OF SAID SECOND PORTIONS NEST INTO THE OTHER SECOND PORTION THEREBY PREVENTING LAFTERAL MOVMENT BETWEEN EACH OF SAID SECOND PORTIONS WHEN SECURED TIGHTLY TOGETHER; FIRST MEANS FOR ADJUSTABLY SECURING TOGETHER SAID SECOND PORTIONS OF SAID FIRST AND SECOND BRACKETS TO HOLD SAID MOLDING CLAMPED BETWEEN SAID FIRST PORTIONS OF SAID FIRST AND SECOND BRACKETS, SAID FIRST MEANS INCLUDING AN ELONGATED SLOT IN ONE OF THE SECOND PORTIONS OF ONE OF SAID FIRST AND SECOND BRACKETS AND A HOLE FORMED IN THE OTHER SECOND PORTION IN ALIGNMENT WITH THE SLOT, AND A BOLT MEANS EXTENDING THROUGH THE SLOT AND THE HOLE; AND A SECOND MEANS PROVIDED ON THE FREE END OF ONE OF SAID FIRST AND SECOND BRACKETS FOR ENGAGEMENT WITH A CURTAIN ROD.
