INVENTUI? ISADORE BLUMENTI-IAL, OF NEW YORK, N. Y.
MATCHl-BOX.
Specification of Letters Patent. Patented @[313 11, 1919 Application filed March 28, 191,8. Serial No. 225,256.
To all lwhom t may concern Be it known that I, IsADonE BLUMENTHAL, a citizen of the United States, and a resident of the city of New York, borough of Manhattan, in the county and State of New York, have invented a new/and Improved Match- Box, of which the following is a full., clear, and exact description.
This invention relates te match boxes and has for an object the provision of an improved construction which may be not only useful but ornamental.
Another object of the invention is to provide an arrangement whereby a propeisupport is provided fora match box'which is formed with compartments and means projecting between the compartments for holding the parts in proper place.
A further object of the inventionis the provision of a match box with a support and an arrangement on the exterior of the box which will provide convenient striking members for various kinds of matches.
In the accompanying drawing:
Figure 1 is a top plan view of a combined ash tray and cigar cutter disclosing an embodiment of the invention.
Fig. 2 is a longitudinal vertical section through Fig. 1 on line 2 2.
Fig. 3 is a front view of the structure shown in Fig. 1.
Fig. 4 is a fragmentary sectional view through a match box and associate parts, the same being taken on line 4-4 of Fig. 2.
Fig. 5 is a rear view of the match box and associate parts shown in Fig. 2.
Fig. 6 is a large detail fragmentary sectional view through Fig. 5 on line 6 6.
Referring* to the accompanying drawing by numerals,4 1 indicates the entrance to the ash tray and 2 the ash tray, which is formed to represent somewhat thel fuselage of an airplane. Connected with the top, though preferably formed integral therewith, are side supports 3 and 4 having the appearance of lifting planes, said side supports carrying the cigar clips 5 and 6 riveted or otherwise secured to the supports in such a manner that the lighted end of a cigar will overlap the ash receptaclel opening 1. VA substantially U-shaped bar 7 is connected to the top piece 8 of the container 2, said bar extending across the opening 1 as shown in Figs. 1 and 2, and spaced a slight distance therefrom so that the ashes, when knockedl off, will automatically drop 4into the tray 2, and Jthe cigar so that the bar will be braced as well as the other parts. The top 8, near one end of the bar 7, is provided with an opening 12 through which the cigar is extended when it is desired to cut off the end thereof. The cutter 19 is rigidly secured to the shaft 13, which shaft has a propellershaped member 14 connected therewith, and also an imitation motor 15. A bearing sleeve 16 is connected to the front wall. 18 of the receptacle 2 by any suitable means, as for instance solder. This bearing sleeve is preferably provided with a. flange whereby it may be more easily soldered in place, where it acts as a bearing surface for shaft 13 and extends into the motor 15 so as to partially support the same. The cutter 19 may be secured by a bolt or otherwise rigidly secured to shaft 13 and by its position on the end wall 18 the cut or removed part of the cigar will be discharged into the receptacle 2 with the ashes therein.
In order that the receptacle and associate parts may be properly supported a pair of supporting wheels 20 are connected with the bottom part of the receptacle 2 and a pair of supporting runners 21 are connected to the tray at the rear. Preferably covering members are provided so that the supporting runners 21 will not scar a finely finished piece of furniture. Above runners 21, and extending laterally from the top plate 8 are supporting platforms 23 and 24 and a central upstanding web or rudder 25. This structure is provided `for receiving a box of matches, said box being telescoped over the upstanding member 25 when the same is ap plied. The platforms 23 and 24 and the upstanding web or rudder 25 act as means for holding in place a match box 26 which may be made of metal or any desired material, and which is provided with compartments 27 and 28. The match box 26 is provided with a curved front wall 29, a straight back wall 30 and a bottom 31. Bottom 31 is cut away at 32 for accommodating the rudder 25 as shown in Fig. 2, while the rudder 25, in turn, is cut away at 33 soas to overlap part of the bottom 31. The back Wall 30 is cut away for the height of the rudder 25 and suitable partitions 34v and 35 are arranged within the front and rear walls as shown particularly in Fig. 4:, whereby anything in the compartments 27 and 28 will not come in contact with the rudder. A stiiening block 36 is arranged between walls 34 and 35 above the rudder 25 and is held in place by any Suitable means, as for instance adhesive. In using the box preferably ordinary matches which may be ignited by rubbing at any point are arranged in one compartment, While the commonly known safety matches may be arranged in the other compartment. To care for the ordinary match, `capable oi' striking at any point, a strip 37 is provided on the rear wall 30, While an extra strip of material 38 is provided for accommodating the safety matches. lIn order to hold strip 38 in place pressed up lugs 39 (Figs. 5 and 6) Vare provided which overlap the strip and hold the same in place until removed.
What I claim is: Y
l. A device of the character described comprising a body, a match box arranged onV said body, means for holding said match box in place on the body, said match box having a housing having an opening in the bot-tom, a pair of partition walls substantially straddling said opening whereby two compartments are provided for receiving different kinds of matches, and striking members arranged on one of the walls of said housing for the respective kinds of matches.
2. A device ofJ the character described comprising a supporting body having an upstanding web or n, anda match b'ox resting on said body formed with an opening at the bottom for accommodatingsaid web, wherebeing a striking member opposite each compartment. Y
