Description

S. -S. SARGEANT.
Harness-Mountings.
Patented July 16,1872.
Inventor AM FIIUTO'ZITHOGRAPiI/E U0. IMX/(IS UKNE5 PROCESS-j UNITED STATES SAMUEL s. SARGEANT, OF NEWARK, NEW" JERSEY.
IMPROVEMENT m HARNESS-MOUNTINGS.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 129,264, dated July 16, 1872.
To all whom it may concern.-
Be it known that I, SAMUEL S. SARGEANT, of Newark, in the county of Essex and State ofNew Jersey, have invented an Improvement in Harness-Mountings; and I do hereby declare that the following isa full and exact description thereof, reference being had to the accompanying drawing making part of this specification- Figure 1 being a side View of a harnessrin g constructed with my improvement; Fig. 2, a transverse section of the same.
Rings, terrets, buckles, and other similar articles of harness-mountings have been made wholly of cast-iron, in imitation of leather-covered mountings of the same kinds, the imitation being produced by a shape resembling the stitch-laps of the leather'covering, with indentations cast therein in imitation of the stitches, and finally japanning the whole to simulate the color and outer finish ofleather. The principal defect in this imitation of the leather coveringis in the indentations to imitate stitches, which, on account of the difficulty of castingironwith sufficiently-sharp impressions, are generally Very indistinct, and frequently almost wholly wanting or imperceptible.
My improvement consists in producing these stitch-imitating indentations by means of dies,
. into which the articles are inserted after casting and subjected to pressure, by means of which sharp indentations, as at a a in the drawing, are produced, so that they are always fully and perfectly developed, thereby greatly improving the appearance and closeness of imitation.
These mountings are not only close imitations in appearance of the leather-covered mountings, but are stronger and much more durable.
What I claim as my invention, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
Malleable-iron harness-mountings, made in imitation of leather-covered mountings, having indentations to represent stitches formed by dies after casting and annealing the mountings, as an improved article of manufacture.
