BACK-PAD FOR HARNESS.

SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 341,495, dated May :11, 1886.

To ctZZ whom it may concern.-

Be it known that I, JAMES P. MILLER, of Boston, in the county of Suffolk and State of Massachusetts, have invented a new and Improved Back-Pad for Harness, of which the following is a full, clear, and exact description.

My invention relates to an improvement in rubber back-pads for harness; and the invention consists in a back-pad facing or shell of rubber, molded hollow or trough-shaped to receive the padding, and formed with side flanges for securing the shield or covering to the saddle.

Reference is to be had to the accompanying drawings, forming part of this specification, in which similar letters of reference indicate corresponding parts in both the figures.

Figure 1 is a front elevation of a harnesssaddle having my new and improved pad applied thereto, and Fig. 2is a perspective view of the pad.

The pad A is made of india-rubber, so as to present a smooth-and non-frictional surface to the back of the horse, and it is made fast by rows of stitching a a to the harness-saddle B, which may be of the usual or of any approved size and construct-ion.

' In forming the pad I prefer to mold it in the form shown clearly in Fig. 2 without a seam, so that extra labor will not be required in uniting different parts. The pad is molded the proper form, with the side enlargements,

b I), central cavity, 0, side skirts, d d, and upwardly-projecting flangesec, by which the pad is stitched to the saddle.

The pad is made hollow or trough-shaped, so that it may be stuffed, if desired, between its inner surface and the saddle B; or may be placed as a covering or shield over the ordinary felt or leather covered padding ff of a harness already made or in use.

The pad will be used mostly for repairing purposes when it has simply to be placed upon the under side of the back-pad and secured by stitching a or other means.

Having thus described myinventiou, I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent 1. As an improved article of manufacture, a rubber covering or shield for harness backpads, molded in one piece and made hollow to receive the padding, and formed with the side flanges, e e, by which the shield may be stitched to the harness-saddle over the padding, substantially as described.
