Description

P. B. HORTON.
SURCING'LE.-
Patented May 30,1876.

UNITED, STATES PATENT OFFICE.
PEMBERTON B. HORTON, OF SAN FRANCISCO, CALIFORNIA.
IMPROVEMENT IN SURCINGLES.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 178,008, dated May 30, 1876; application filed November 27, 187 5. t
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known thatI, PEMIBERTON B. Hoe- TON, of San Francisco city and county, State of California, have invented an Improved Surcingle; and I do hereby declare the following description and accompanying drawings are sufficient to enable any person skilled in the art or science to which it most nearly appertains to make and use my said invention or improvement without further invention or experiment.
My invention consists in applying an elastic or yielding pad of felt to that side of a surcingle which comes next to the animals body, so that it will conform closely to the shape of the body, and while it serves as a pad or cushion to prevent chafing it will also give a firmer adhesion, which will prevent the surcing'le from turning or slipping from its proper place.
In the accompanying drawings, let A represent a surcingle, which may be made of webbing, leather, or other suitable materiaL. Upon one side of this surcingle or belt I secure a pad or cushion, B, made of felt. The peculiar character of felt is such that when thus combined with a surcingle the latter is held steadily in position on the animals body, and does not slip or turn as when padded with other articles. This pad can be either cemented, sewed, riveted, or otherwise attached to the belt, as may be found most convenient and durable.
In practice I use a felt cushion, and usually place it along the middle of the belt, where the surcingle presses hardest upon the back of the animal, and this will generally be suflicient; but it can also be made to extend the entire length of the belt, and so placed as to come next to the skin of the animal.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
As an improved article of manufacture, asurcingle provided with one or more pads formed of a number of layers of felt sewed on the inside of the surcingle, substantially as set forth.
