HARNESS BACK-PAD.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 380,064, dated March 27, 1888.
Application led September 5, 1887. Serial No. 248.857. (N o model.)
To all whom it may concern.'- v Be it known that I, LIMBRICK W. VANDEN- BURG, of Americus, in the county of Lyon and State of Kansas, have invented a new and Improved Harness Back-Pad, of which the following is a full, clear, and exact description. My invention consists of aharuess back-pad composed of ametal frame ent-irelyinclosed or covered upon the outer surface with leather, and provided with pads upon the under snrface, the metal frame being composed of three sections-viz., a central curved section and two side sect-ions hinged to the ends of the central curved section.
Reference is to be had to the accompanying drawings, forming a part of this specilication, in which similar letters of reference indicate corresponding parts in both the figures.
Figure 1 is a partly sectional elevation of a harness backpad made in accordance with my invention, and Fig. 2 is a broken view of the under surface of the pad.
A represents the metal plate or body of the pad, which is much narrower than the pad as shown in Fig. 1. Upon the outer surface of the metal plate or bodyAis placed theleather strap B, that passes entirely over the crown or arch of the pad, as shown in Fig. 1. Between the outer leather, B, and the metal body A is placed the strap C,of heavy leather, which also passes entirely over the arch of the pad. Beneath the metal body A is placed the padleathers D,Which are stuffed in the usual manner, and the stuffing is kept from contact with the Shanks of the terrets E and screws F by metal plate G. (Shown clearly in Fig. 1.) The edges of the pad-leather D are stitched to the edges of the leather C, so that the metal body A is wholly iuclosed in leather.
The body or plateA is made in three sec- A harness back pad formedv of y a metal body, A, composed of the central curved section, d, the side sections, f, hinged thereto, the pad-leather D, the outer leather, B, and the heavy leather C, the metal body being narrower than the pad and entirely inclosed .by the leather of the pad, substantially as described. l
